My AR15 has developed INTERNET problems

- I love my Schmeisser AR and i have had zero problems with it. At the moment it's shot over 9000 rounds and still working fine. But after posting one of our latest videos - a review of the Schmeisser S4f there were some comments criticizing the brand. Some were probably just haters but there were also some legitimate concerns. One of these was about the markings or "damage" visible on the bolt from normally using the rifle
After an online discussion i decided to make a deep dive into AR bolts to see what's what and try to get to the bottom of this. It seems that markings on the bolt lugs are completely normal and common especially at higher round count.
But what do you guys think about this?

My job is to drill holes in things and then bolt them together.
At first, it's boring, but later on, it's riveting.
Ha!😂
I’m mad at u because I laughed at this dad joke 😂

You're screwed. I bet you are only going to get ten, maybe fifteen thousand more rounds out of that bolt.
Reminds me of my favourite quote from Stalker
- Is he going to live?
- Yes, but not for long and poorly, just like all other humans
I'd wish I could get that kind of round count out of my barrels...
Hell, I wish I could afford shooting often enough to get that kind of round count, ammo is expensive AF here.

Ammo cost is getting pretty out of hand for certain calibers.
You could show a picture of a rock and people will find something wrong with it. lol
People overthink stuff. Parts wear out. The internet is not shy about telling you how much you or your stuff sucks.
A lot of people who freak out over the play between the upper and lower of a Stoner pattern rifle don't realize that nearly all of it goes away when a magazine is inserted. If the gun passes headspace check, the rounding of the lugs only makes the gun run smoother.
"i'm used to AK's, looks fine to me"
aint that a statement lol
Also it's important to understand that a bolt in an AR is a consumable item. Eventually, even if the locking lugs have little discernible wear on them, the cam pin hole will elongate and oval out before eventually breaking. Cam pin wear will accelerate this. Will this happen before you shoot out a barrel? Maybe. Honestly the School Of The American Rife is the best channel for accurate info on the AR system that there is on RUclips.
www.youtube.com/@SchooloftheAmericanRifle
i'm following his channel
Those bolts that were messsed up in Poland had like 300 rounds shot and were looking like eating up 30000. So yeah, bolt is a consumable, but for crying out loud not 300 rounds consumable.
@@PolenarTactical
Have you tried a cam pin with a roller bearing before?
Could help to have less wear on the receiver.
@@nathandrel i dont know what specifically happened in Poland but i tried to get more info. There was a couple of YT commenters, a reddit threat and a guy on IG explaining the thing. From what i gathered the issue were the markings on the bolt, not an actual problem with the functioning of the rifle.
Unfortunately i didnt have the chance to see this on mine because we shot the first 1200 rounds with this rifle without cleaning or even opening it.
So i dont know if the markings on my bolt started immediately or are a result of 9k rounds. I havent even noticed these markings before until one of the commenters brought it up.
But do these marking even make any difference or is it just a cosmetic issue?
@@onpsxmember no
I wont change any parts until something breaks because im curious what will fail first. I will also make a video about it and then check out for alternatives or upgrades
I wouldnt worry about it. At some point like 15k+ rounds you will probably need a new bolt but that just sounds like good service life to me. And at 9k supressed I would say its already done its job.
AK guy: Bolt fits, gun shoots
AR guy: OMG, HERE'S THE ISSUES (lists off appearance issues that have nothing to do with function of the rifle)
I too am used to the AK. However, any metal with a sharp edge will round out after literally thousands of high speed rubs against another piece of metal. I’d only worry if it developed a chip or crack, and even then, there’s several other lugs still on the bolt, so even with a lug or two missing I doubt it would explode as long as it’s still firing while fully chambered. Though obviously if that happens, switch it out asap as those are load bearing surfaces.
You’re fine
As a new AR owner, i appreciate every video on any AR potential problems
Make sure you have a great quality bolt and not simply a mil spec. I had so many issues and couldn't figure out why.
Dont worry about it until you get actual problems (if at all) and then diagnose it.
For example i would probably have to change out the gas rings on my Windham Weaponry bolt shown in this video but i refuse to until the rifle stops working normally.
If not for anything else, it's for my curiosity 😅
the phrase "mil spec" terrifies me. I've seen government procurement... but generally your rifle should be fine. Even the cheapest AR seem to last ages. There are $500 guns out there pushing into the multiple thousands of rounds without issue at all. Dunno what to say to people... I see it happen all the time yet there's always "that guy" who's sure your gun is about to die because it's not X brand with Y features and Z special coatings.
For the science!
Me too, even if I live in the Philippines, 18 years old and still have no gun.
I recently bought a brand new Schmeisser. When I unpacked the bolt carrier group, which was wrapped separately, I noticed that several of the locking lugs appeared quite worn, with some even chipped badly. This was before I even fired a single shot or assembled the rifle for the first time. It looks worse than the wear on your bolt carrier group, which has 9k rounds through it. While I agree with others that the bolt carrier group is a consumable item, I didn't expect this kind of wear on a brand new one (aside from maybe some test rounds from the factory?). Interestingly, two friends of mine bought the same model on the same day, and one of them had similar issues with worn locking lugs, while the other did not. So, 2 out of 3 rifles shipped at the same time from the factory had this issue.
In my experience running very high round count ARs the number one failure point isn’t worn or broken lugs. It is a tendency of the bolt to fracture at the cam pin hole. When ever we see failures like this we simply throw a Battle Bolt from HM Defense in there and never give it another thought. Those aren’t drilled all the way through and come with a slightly shortened cam pin. We’ve never seen one fail in all the years we’ve been using them. Beyond that most issues are with typical wear parts like rings and extractor springs. If your extractor uses just a bare spring, you can save yourself the headache by throwing an o-ring in there. Most quality builds will include those already. You have to get into cheap chinesium materials or improperly hardened bolts to see any lug issues which will usually show up after only a few thousand rounds of hard use. If you’ve already put 9k rounds through your gun, I wouldn’t expect any issues like that. Keep your eye on the thin parts of the bolt near the cam pin hole for any cracks at between 20k and 30k, but beyond that ARs are pretty reliable even under hard use.
Thanks for the info I was looking for a new bolt/ bolt carrier group.
should ask mac over at military arms channel about his BCM AR15 and how the bolt on that gun is doing since it has 8600 rounds put thru it.
Looks fine for almost 10k rounds. If there was an easy and cheap way of doing it would say to send it to the School of the American Rifle on RUclips for a colab to get your gun health checked.
"Hmm yes, the firing pin angle is wrong here." - someone who has never even shot a case of ammo probably
I have got the Schmeisser 10.5 S4F Sport from 2019 and a 14.5 M4F Sport from 2022 (German versions with closed hand guard. The S4F ran about 3000 rounds, the M4F around 1000. No noticeable or suspicious wear whatsoever. I am very happy with Schmeisser especially the service is the finest. I also have a AR15-9 from 2019 which had an issue with the bolt catch in the first month, it was not properly hardened. They changed it without discussion and gave me a nice Knife to apologise.
I mean if you really want a bomb proof AR-15 bolt get either the Sharps relia-bolt or the LMT Enhanced bolt. The latter option is not cheap as far as bolts go but it deals with the cam pin, extractor, and bolt weak areas along with making it out of a unspecified alloy thats stronger than carpenter and is completely chrome plated (Allegedly 25K round life).
The sharps is the lower end option (But for its price its a banger) that has some altered bolt lug geometry and is made out of S7 tool steel with DLC coating to increase round life (Around the 15-18K mark). It does not have things like the smaller cam pin holes etc but since it is made of S7 steel by the time you shoot it to that point your rifle barrel and parts of the bolt carrier itself would have likely have quit first.
Just check the headspace with a field gauge annually. AR-15 bolts usually shear lugs when they actually fail
You're fine. And if it were to break, just replace it, 50-100 usd.
ARs are unrealiable, in terms of reliability above 10, 000 rounds and highmaintenance is a key issue. Having been issued 1 during my military service (M16a2) we spend more time thinking of trying keep mud and dust and all shorts out of the weapon during patrols than actual soldiering. And it jams ALOT!!
Ps. Im from a tropical country somewhere next to the equator.(Oceania)
Military rifles aren't lubed enough and are overcleaned in my experience.
Lube the thing heavily and it will run was my experience, sand, mud, dust didn't matter.
Instagram commandos don't actually use their guns so visual wear is a no-no, it makes it look like a "working rifle" instead of a rifle with a sugar daddy.
Keep it up Ziga, we love the videos. Cheers.
I think @SchooloftheAmericanRifle needs to weigh in here
ruclips.net/video/iqUu03H5KyM/видео.html
The barrel indexing pin may be broken off. That would allow the barrel to be slightly rotated on assembly, resulting in the bolt lugs clashing with the barrel extension lugs. Lug overlap when locked, and when unlocked may also be off a little.
I am not a gunsmith, but I've watched a lot of school of the American rifle and it seems that the most common long-term failure point on AR bolts is stretching and eventually cracking where the materialist that are around the cam pin hole
#1 biggest problem: is not AK. Throw in garbage
And throw AK in the garbage, because it's not an AR

@PolenarTactical I can agree with you on the state of the Schmeisser-bolt after some thousands of rounds - but what about a brand new bolt? I picked my factory-new Schmeisser up yesterday and when I pulled the bolt from the paper wrap it was already looking something like yours. I assume they test fire the guns in the factory as part of QC, but surely not to the extent that it would create so much wear?
Lol mine after 100 rounds looks even much worse than zigas bolt.
I even have damage on the gaskey, i dont know how this is even possible..
Mine looks worn aswell. But as long as it shoots i am fine
I would keep an eye on the cam pin hole for stretching/cracks. Bolt lugs rounding is fine until it chips.
Just know bolt lifetime isn't typically over 15k so i would buy a spare bolt if you plan to keep shooting it regularly.
Ahh, the armchair armorers and smiths leap to the keyboard. Weeding out the guys who really know their stuff because of years of experience vs. what they read on a back page article or watched on YT can be futile. Overthinking a problem a common thread when there isn't a problem.
Young manufacturing makes excellent BCGs. That’s what the WWSD rifles use. I’m running their standard BCG. Great video as always
A new bolt is only like 100 us but I would keep running it because it's just cosmetic at this point 👉.one more do u no about bolt timing if u dont look it up a ar15 needs timed if u gonna run it fast and hard.😅okay.
Many of those concerns are prevalent in the military rifles I was assigned. Like the upper and lower being somewhat loose and small wear on the bolt was common. I still shot expert so I think the rifles assigned to me were fine, but maybe I just don't know better because I am not armorer.
Upper and lower play basically doesn't matter at all. It would have to be really comically bad to be an issue. How bad?
Consider that most rifles work perfectly fine without the front pivot pin, just the rear pin holding everything together.
Not being an armorer isn't stopping anyone else rubbing their mouths lol
The point is people don't know what the hell they're talking about and spend more time typing than shooting.
Run an AR wet, oiled, wipe it down, and keep it maintained, normal wear , i would never say its more rugged than a AK system, but modularity and it is relaible, also if you are going to shoot it suppressed, maybe an adjustable gas block or use a BCG specific to varied Gassing, there is BCG's out there that are suited for Silencer work, all systems have their quirks
So rugged it doesn't run after getting dropped in the mud

my bolt developed an internet problem
@@PolenarTactical that's what most people don't understand about the internet, once it's out in the open.... well. No regerts.
The way I see it.. the AR is capable of great life as long as you recognize it as the machine it is.
You have pistons, cams, rings. All these parts slide/rotate and against each other. Run it wet. If I could put an automatic oiler on mine like a chainsaw, I would. Run it wet enough and most of the carbon will wipe off. I dont believe in detailed scraping and gouging the carbon off.. My cleaning is real... expedient. But carbon can be mildly abrasive and aluminium is kind of soft. So when it's convenient, wipe it off and make it wet again. I use 0w-20 motor oil when its cold, and 15w-40 when its hot. Why? So i'm not stingy with the oil, and it's oil I keep on hand for the cars. Running soppy wet DOES attract some dirt but it also helps the dirt move away from the moving parts. You also have a port cover which keeps everything out. Use it.
Unless it's way overgassed or a voilent little shorty, they'll last a long time.
Mix your oil with high temp grease to the consistency of warm honey. It helps keep it where you put it for much longer, doesn't burn off as quickly, and it's never given me any issues in cold weather. I use synthetic 10W-30 and synthetic red high temp grease but I don't think it really matters that much.
Nyet. Rifle is fine.

RIP Windham Weaponry 😢
Hey, if it works for you it works for you, right? Enjoy your rifle dude. I don't think we can even get that brand in the US.
Not a bonafide expert, but… at current US prices 10,000 rounds is $5,000 dollars. So if bolt and carrier and barrel “only” last 10,000 rounds that’s probably $750-1,000 in replacement parts after $5,000 in ammunition. And the professionals seem to think 15,000 rounds lifetime isn’t unreasonable.
Worry about your ammunition budget. Keep a spare bolt carrier group, you may get unlucky with some part of it. Expect new barrels eventually. And don’t shoot it too little (not a problem for you I think).
Arm chair experts are the best experts!
I don't have problems with my AR neither. Just it doesn't like all magazines... if you put the magazine hard enough in, they can over insert...
Hmmm try swapping out your bolt catch. When you open her up and look at the part, you will see that "hook" that rests on the lower near the mag area. I think certain bolt catches interfere with some mags. Specifically pmags.
There are so many different AR mags that its sometimes hard to figure out the problem. What i suggest is to try standard GI mags and a magpul m3, if the rifle works normally with both, the problem is in the mags you have. But if the rifle doesnt work with standard GI mags and/or has issues with pmag m3, then something is out of spec.
It can be something as simple as a weak spring - i have an ambi mag release on my WWSD and when shooting suppressed the overpressure of the gasses sometimes dropped the mag. I solved the issue with a stronger mag latch spring
@@PolenarTactical Well, as I live in Germany I can only try out the 10 Rounders. Had the problem once with a Bulgarian magazine and yesterday with an OA Active mags... Otherwise the OA mags are my favorites right now. Overall in around 5000 rounds 2 over inserted mags is not too bad...
@@matts.2637 i think OA mags are a bit out of spec, they do not fall free in some of my rifles
@@PolenarTactical I will try with PMags next. I also have a Schmeisser btw.
Yeah, openly liking Schmeisser is like stirring the hornet's nest, at least that's my impression here in Germany. Many like to hate on them because they don't manufacture all their parts in-house. All I can say is their customer service is good and when something is not working right (the bolt release paddle of my AR9 broke) you get fast and uncomplicated replacements. Also, their feature set out of the box is vastly superior to the competition. I like my Schmeisser rifle and would absolutely buy it again. Though I have not handled their .223 stuff.

Way too many arm chair warriors on your channel who don’t know shit .. here is the truth .. 15k suppressed or un suppressed simply change the BCG , run it wet and you will be fine . There will be the usual wear on the BCG as any other weapon . As long as the gas rings hold up you are fine. Just test the BCG rings when you clean and inspect that’s all.
I carry a spare BCG with me and have yet to use it . This is with over 10k rounds suppressed
Bravo company makes the best bolt carriers in the gun industry. They are US military contracted. Might want to look into one of those.
I have never even seen a bolt carrier fail unless it was an out of battery detonation...
Wait, people are criticizing you because of a bolt, that has fired 9000 rounds, is MINIMALLY worn? Man you have to watch how horrible the early versions of the M249 SAW, specially by their known issue of breaking the firing ping. Imaging having to "remedy" that under fire. Remember kids: Switching to your pistol is always faster than replacing a firing pin.
Please restock the F5 MFG ACR like stock for the love of god.
I like seeing the old Wymdham on the table. I have a Wyndham AR-10.
I am currently in the process of receiving a new bolt and carrier from schmeisser, due to chipping and wear of almost a millimeter on each of the bolt lugs. I've only shot some 700 rounds through my rifle. The process has been going on for almost five months now, due to schmeisser apparently first deciding to ship non CIP tested bolts, to be proofed by my local authorities and now reversing that decicion to instead ship CIP-proofed bolts. Yay. Luckily I don't have pay for any of this, thanks to strict consumer protection, but the lenght of this process has basically spoiled most of this season of competition and training.
The worst part of this all, is that there has been basically no communication or acknowledgement of this issue from schmeisser, and I've been left to ask for news from my retailer.
I am hoping to receive the parts and my rifle during this month, and have also begun the process to receive compensation for this absurdly long time to get this fixed. (Again, I had to initiate this, not anything from schmeisser).
But, on the positive, I agree with žiga, that this is one of the best AR-type rifles I have shot. Excessive wear on the bolt nonewithstanding. I just hope that schmeisser would publicly acknowledge this problem, and wouldn't try to sweep this under the rug.
My schmeisser bolt looks really bad after just 800 - 1000 rounds... The barrel extension clearly removs metal from the backside of the lookinglugs.
This happens on most ARs unless they have already rounded locking lugs or undercut like LMT or some others
Unfortunately, this "hobby" is more than any other interest affected by the Dunning-Kruger effect. I have been in the world of amateur shooting for a long time. And the percentage of people who are willing to argue and at the same time do not even have basic knowledge / do not own the system in question or the given type of weapon/ammunition. It's stunning all the time. It's not even worth mentioning the insightful discussions and recommendations for equipment...
Not long ago, I moved to the level where my hobby became my job. And I dare say that I'm exponentially gaining knowledge regarding ammunition (development/quality/certification) in particular... And I'm starting to detach myself from such endless guessing and measuring of mental genitalia.
(Even a few years back I lost a friend during an argument about "He needs a 556 chamber as his main argument for buying an AR")
However, I think your main problem is that you shoot that rifle. Most people are unable to resist the concept of a gun being used. And they still look from the point of view that the gun must look good in the photos and represent the price tag well. Any use (heaven forbid shooting and moving functional parts) then reduces its value dramatically...
The problem with the AR community, is that there are way too many Karens and snubs. They are worse than HOA. They will excommunicated you if you dare buy anything other than Daniel Defense. Unfortunately, the AK community is going the same route with the AK Puritans that will shame you if you dare make a modification to your AK that makes it look like anything other than the Original AK-47 held by the the designer Mikhail Kalashnikov. 🙄
Opinions are like a$$holes, everybody have one, especially on the internet. AR do not explode on normal use like AK, bolt and throat wear will show up with the bullet yawing, then it is time to change the bolt and barrel. I know, I personally wore out 2 sets of chrome-lined barrel and NiB bolts at around 30K+ rounds, between training and multi-gun matches.
Your barrel extension could be slightly out of alignment. This can happen if the barrel was not secured properly during installation and was over torqued. This can also happen when installing a muzzle device.
1:11 Thats a problem with the coating
1:13 the back of the locking lug shouldnt have a dent in the material.
1:16 something is wrong with that gun from an assembly position. The upper is most def out of spec, there shouldnt be that much wear on the cam pin and gas key.
Shouldnt be any actually.
After seeing 1:19 That gun is suffering bcg bounce, 1:20 I would look at other issues that causes that much wear on a BCG.
1:43 lots of suppressor use or the Bolt is 9010, its not a good material, WW isnt known for making quality BCG, Lots of what appears to be normal use with suppressors to me.
If any part of the BCG is lined in chrome in any place other than the gas key and the hole the bolt sits in its junk and that goes for any other coating like tin or anodizing..
The only place on the BCG that should be chrome is the gas key and bolt hole.
The amount of wear on that chrome bolt is almost down to bare metal, the chrome is almost gone.
Which means that its now possible to get a no go gauge to go.
2:02 Left the extractor is approaching its end life, get a spare and use a springco spring and ditch that stupid oring BS.
The middle one Im concerned about the pattern of wear on the whole bolt face, check that one with a no go gauge.
Id also replace the extractor and spring.
I hate magic coating BCG
GAs rings, If run suppressed replace them every 5000 rounds, normal use every 8-10 is ok depending on time of use during each use.
2:22 you are getting carrier tilt.
2:43 I can see the flaws in that bolt, between the back of the lugs and the shoulder, Its a low grade bolt that they covered in chrome to try and hide imperfections but they still used a same sized bolt as everyone else and increased its tolerances.
The german bolt has normal suppressor use wear, remember it shortens its life under a can, TBH it looks like 15k round count bolt that never saw a can.
Bolts are consumable items. I don't understand what people don't get about that. When it's time to replace your barrel you should probably replace your bolt as well. I would also check the gas chamber inside the BCG to make sure it is still in good condition. A firearm beats the shit out of itself while firing so it should not be surprising that parts will wear out over time. Most people don't need to worry about it though because most people do not shoot enough for it to be a concern seeing as a bolt can realistically last 15k rounds in an AR if it's a good bolt and I have heard of them going longer. The finish will wear off over time and the bolt lugs will as well. Unless you have one of those stupid XPB bolt carriers that are made of ridiculously hard tool steel because then your barrel extension and upper will get torn up instead.
Should be safe up to 15000 to 20000 rounds like many military grade weapons
So, it would like 8 to 10 years of rough usage? Sound pretty good, and an AR bolt isn't the most expensive part to change...

This is kind of an expensive Hobby if you prefer this to blow up in your face maybe you should try something else that's safe and doesn't cost much. Love you all.
Its not that easy in Europe as a bolt is a serialized part, that is strictly controlled and difficult to get as a spare part.
If the bolt is messed up; just get a new rifle.
