- Опубликовано: 2 авг 2024
- Ralph Till is one of the premier breeders of the critically endangered Egyptian Tortoise (Testudo kleinmanni) in the USA. In this episode, we discuss why Ralph chose to work with this species, their husbandry and breeding protocols, why they are critically endangered in their native range, and how private breeders are saving the species from extinction. If you are wanting to take your herpetoculture to the next level, consider following Ralph's example and choose to work with an endangered species.

*Thank you for listening to the episode! Don't forget to check the show notes for more info on Ralph and his work:* www.animalsathomenetwork.com/89-ralph-till/
Very illuminating episode! Heartbreaking there is no habitat left for these precious critters, but heartwarming that there are people who care enough to engage in preservation.
Couldn't agree more! :)
Love Ralph! He’s a terrific guy who’s extremely helpful and knowledgeable. Proud to call him a friend and love to follow his success with these tortoises and well as Pyxis.
Thanks for listening, Charlie! I really like the setup you have at your place as well. We'll have to get you on the podcast at some point too!
The little torts moving about behind him was so adorable. Thanks for another great episode! Lots of good information as always.
Haha I know right?! ☺️ love that little guy! Thank you for watching, Natalia!
Great episode! Thank you for this, very fascinating hearing about his husbandry for his tortoises.
Thanks for listening, Adam!
Thanks for the kleinmanni content! Ralph's masterpiece
Thank you for listening! :)
I love listening to your casts keep.up the great work.
Thank you for listening!
Amazing podcast! Was very refreshing to hear such great insight on a lot of the issues we are facing today within the hobby and the reality of what is happening to so many animal species today. You spoke so well about everything, if only people thought and cared as much as you. It is also so sad to hear the reality of what is happening to the world around us. The Conservation vs. Preservation was very eye opening. Thank you both for sharing your knowledge and content and further helping to make a difference 🙏
Thank you so much for listening to the episode, I’m glad you enjoyed it. I love talking to people like Ralph, he has such an important vision 😁
Thanks for the great video. I've been wanting to get an epyptian for years, and may finally pull the trigger in 2023!!! You and Ralph had some great discussions here, and only make me want a little egyptian even more haha. Cheers and happy new year!
That is awesome! If you do end up pulling the trigger, good luck! Happy New Year to you as well!
I've been looking and unsuccessful. I appreciate any leads. Thanks!
The most inspiring concept from Ralph. "THE PURPOSE" of this hobby instead of just feeding them. Please count me in for any conservation effort for this species survival. Time, money, or anything I can do to help.
It’s a very important concept!
Hello great video podcast information
Glad you enjoyed it
that little guy over his shoulder sure is active! really cute…
Haha getting his exercise!
love those tiny torts.
Thank you 👍💕💕💕
Thanks for watching!
Very great podcast. In some way months I am going back raising Testudo kleinmanni from European studbook foundation 👍
Awesome! I’m glad you enjoyed it 😁
I work at an aza facility and there is still a stud book.
odd thing that you can actually find these for sale in Egypt marketplaces half dead for like 20 bucks. kids will get one as a birthday present or get bought one it'll live for like a year and then die off probably. almost got one myself when I was like 14. (Source: I'm Egyptian lol)
Wow that is crazy, it’s such a shame 😞 Thank you for sharing that!
@@AnimalsatHomePodcast Yeah, no problem. I'm much older now and I understand the ramifications of what was going on. There's definitely a lot of illegal pet and meat trade in Egypt and some of the other African and Asian countries. The reason I never ended up getting one as a child was just because they always looked so sickly to me. Now I'm glad I didn't get one because I would have been supporting a poaching trade and I also would have had a critically endangered animal in my care as a 14 year old... but it does sadden me and I wonder if I could have saved one.
My dream tortoises.
Loved seeing that tortoise booking it across the cage in the background. 😀
Haha yes, I loved watched that little guy too! And I remember you had messaged me a while back about the species, glad I was able to get Ralph on to chat about them!
On second thought, I think it was Kinixys you had messaged me about!
It was the kinixys I messaged you about. I told you to get Jeremy Thompson on for a interview.
I hope to breed them one day 🙏
Awesome!
What the egg weighed 220 grams??or the female???
I think the female, if I’m remembering correctly!
I have Egyptian 🐢 pet
Awesome!
Wouldn’t you love that though a yard full of Galapagos tortoise. I thought they were extinct.
That was something I heard on the Internet so it’s got to be true. Lol
Haha yeah that would be awesome!
Can't help watching the tortoise in the back...
Purtroppo nn capisco un cavolo mi piacerebbe saperne di più dato che vorrei prendere una
So, these tortoises are being poached out of their native range. A vast majority of the ones poached will die before ever reaching the consumer. A majority of the ones who survive will also perish in the hands of buyers who are ignorant of, or simply don't care about, the proper care of Testudo kleinmanni. If they don't want them in their native area and are developing the habitat resulting in the extinction of the tiny natives anyway... We should just buy them from the source, shipping them out ourselves until their market runs out. With the tortoise never leaving the hands of knowledgable and responsible keepers/handlers. That way, we can ensure their survival in captivity in the hands of knowledgable and responsible breeders on every continent and save many more lives than we are now. They are dying for nothing anyway and we need to help them.
Yes, that is a really good point!
just feeding them, no purpose lol. wow.
I’m not sure what you mean?
