The very antithesis of “awake” is “asleep”, and their respective complementary states - “reality” and “dream” - are at opposition also.
“... dreams that repeat, changing form, are the only things connecting me to here ...”
Yet, it is in their dreams that these ten people feel the most real, in their sleep that they feel the most awake. For when they awaken, they feel as though something is missing, something so lost to them that they don’t even know what it is. Reality for them is a mere passing of time, a hollow state of existence.

Despite everything, because of everything, it is their dreams, dissolving and transient and disappearing, that gradually lead them to who they once knew, who they once were.

A lost boy wakes up, and remembers. Heaven and hell. The ten people who loved him most.
