Thank you for clarifying this about the sauna. Nearly 10 years ago, while living in San Diego, I suffered a Myocardial Infarction brought on by a Pulmonary Embolism. Thanks to the great medical treatment and months of Rehab., I became well enough to live on my own again and eventually moved to New Mexico for financial reasons. Shortly after arriving (in ABQ), I joined a clinic near where I lived, that catered to the large Native American population here. Among their healing modalities offered to both Natives and Non-Natives, on the grounds of the clinic, was a sweat lodge (which is a little like a sauna, but a bit more 'smokier' and steamier). One of my neighbors, who was also Native American (Dine, also known as Navajo) and also a client of this clinic, asked me to come to the sweat lodge with her (sweat lodges were offered twice a week with only men one day, and only women the next day). I said yes, never having been to a sweat lodge, but upon filling out the paperwork to attend it said if I had any heart issues to please bring a note from the PCP or Cardiologist saying you were healthy enough to participate. So I consulted my PCP, which was in the same clinic, and because it had been less than a year since my heart attack & PE, and though I hadn't any health episodes related to my PE & Cardiac history up to then, she decided to err on the side of caution, and recommended that I NOT attend. Fast forward to present day, and due to changing a Medicare Advantage Program, I may be entitled to join a gym that offers sauna (and a small aerobic exercise pool and hot tub, along with regular gym equipment). My Cardiac Health is good to average, given my age and weight, and I've only had one small episode of a leg clot a few months ago, where just increasing slightly a blood thinner medication seem to have done the trick. Still, I will take your advice and, when a gym member, try-out the sauna at least once. If I feel uncomfortable in any way, I will get out immediately. Thank you for your intellectualism and honesty. Happy holidays if you celebrate.
I'm glad you have let off some steam talking about sauna therapy. Now that you have addressed this the heat will be off then. No need to sweat it out anymore. Happy Hot-Mass as well.

Physionic: Merry Christmas! Really appreciate your doing this follow-up addressment of the commenter and your ethical high value approach to interpreting studies! Btw, you mentioned plans for more sauna content in response to another commenter on your previous video. It would be great if you considered covering this study (doi:10.1001/jamainternmed.2014.8187), which is considered one of the biggest ones to date that has motivated many people to get into routine sauna usage, given its focus on long-term data. It's a cohort study, which followed >2.3k participants, for >20 years. It tracked various biomarkers (systolic, diastolic, triglycerides, etc.) and mortality rates (SCD, CHD, CVD, and all-cause). They also compare different frequencies, durations, and temperatures for sauna usage in Finland (where most people use saunas at-home or socially, not in a gym setting). There's also extensive supplement pages accounting for various demographics, such as the percentage of participants who smoke in each cohort. The authors concluded P
I'd also like to add that regular sauna is great for your phycological well being. It's quiet time and even a little meditation. I definitely feel like I'm taking some time just for myself. And it can be uncomfortable the longer you stay in there. So... Like ice baths... I believe it builds resilience in our every day lives of convenience and comfort. Not all benefits are clinically measurable... some just feel good. Merry Christmas
When comparing the effects of popular beta-blockers and ACE inhibitors having relatively short half lives on mortality to those of sauna use, evidence suggests that regular sauna bathing may reduce mortality to a similar extent. In some populations, sauna may be even more effective than these medications. This isn’t to say, ditch the meds and do sauna instead. Blood pressure management needs to be customized to each patient. Closely monitored individualized therapy is essential.
Merry Christmas, Doctor, I read an article on the same subject years ago about hot water emersion and longevity in Japan. They went looking for a similar result and found it in the sauna baths.
Would be great to get your opinion on inflammation lowering effect, improved DNA repair through heat shock proteins and the increase in VO2 max after training as seen in some studies.

i did sauna 500 times for 2.5 years when i was 39 and 40. i am 46. i did intervals of 7 minutes and cool down with cold water otherwise the heart beats would raise and it's dangerous, 2 people died in this particular sauna. the sand clock shows 15 minutes, which i guess is the normal limit, but i made it half just in case, as safety measure. the point of sauna detox is that the fat has porus and stores lifelong the toxines unless you sweat a lot, then you pay the price of living again whatever symptons the toxins causes, because they are squeezed like a sponge back to the blood stream hence the brain. even if you took medecines 50 years ago, they are back. so sauna is a must for reset, but living again the effects of all the poisons ever is a thing to take in consideration.
Frequent Sauna user here - 5 x a week. I looked at Sauna studies several years ago. One critique I had on the Sauna literature is that all of the large studies seem to have been done by the same lead researcher and on the Finish population. The risk of bias goes up when there is perhaps only one main researcher in the field. In addition, it could be that there is something about the Finnish that makes them more susceptible to the benefits of Sauna. Nonetheless, I bought a Sauna in 2017 and have been using it consistently ever since that point in time.
As an almost daily user of my gym both for exercise (swimming, weights, elliptical) and the sauna I have observed that the sauna is often used by overweight/obese men (single sex sauna) who you never see on the exercise floor. Many believe it replaces exercise. Others that use saunas are young guys who seem to think it also replaces exercise as a better warmup than actually doing some cardio before lifting. For this young group I am quite sure they are incorrect. They are not activating their muscles. I would love to get feedback on this, especially as a replacement for warm ups.
4:25 your second critique comment displayed the same comment as the first critique. No mention of sauna locale appears in that comment. I thought the 3% portion of the first comment deserved a response also: I have seen more than a few studies calling 1-2% deltas in cycling power called "significant" when that's the limit of power meter accuracy. Pro cyclists use sauna for BPV expansion and subsequent Hg increases, it's very popular in that sport. Merry Christmas.
Guaranteed to sleep better every time I use my sauna. Good enough reason to use in my opinion. If there are other positives like better cardio health, just a 🍒 on top.
Merry Christmas 🎉 Insightful as always. I wondered if you had looked into sauna blankets while you were down the Sauna rabit hole? I've been curious as a space saving idea but im not sure over all how effective it would be.
Yes that would be very interesting, especially considering the blankets are infrared compared to what these other studies are usually the dry heat ones. Merry Christmas 👍
Additionally, blood pressure is almost axiomatically taken incorrectly. I refer to the posit that many people being Tx for Htn are not hypertensive. They needed multiple B'P's following the AHA guidelines which are as good as any other standard for taking B/P.
I seem to recall that optimal sauna use was 5x / week, 30 min a day... So, it wouldn't need to have long term benefits, if you're sustaining a near daily intervention.
This was thermal therapy, and you promised to talk about cold therapy later. Are there any studies about the Finnish habit of taking saunas in the winter, running straight out from the sauna to roll about naked in the snow, or, in the case the sauna is located on a lake, jumping into a pre-cut hole in the ice?
Would you please make a video explaining atherosclerosis? I get different takes from different channels. One point of confusion and disagreement is with diet and cholesterol levels (namely LDL). Some podcasters claim that cholesterol and even LDL choleterol has no bearing on developing arteriosclerosis while others claim that is the main causative agent. Diet is another point of contention with some advocating for a diet rich in animal products while others claim that a plant based diet is the key to arterial health and that such a diet (plant based) could even reverse arteriosclerosis. Also, would you let us know in the same video not only what diet is best to avoid narrowing of the arteries and whet diet could potentially reverse this but also what tests or signs or symptoms one can use to identify if one has arteriosclerosis or narrowing of the arteries or an impediment in circulation. It would be amazing to see a complete video on this subject with the usual scientific references and physiological explanations. Thanks in advance and please keep doing what you do.
This is like the Arminianism vs Calvinism debate (in Christendom). Both sides (anti LDL vs pro LDL) have great arguments and confirmation bias is everywhere.
Merry Christmas! I was curious if you've made any videos on grounding pads/sheets? I recently got both and the results it's given me are pretty interesting. Lower inflammation/soreness from post-workouts and deeper sleep. Still hoping for reduction in chronic back pain from multiple conditions but the science is really interesting.
Bee ess! 😂 j/k i wanted to say that for the fun of it. Seriously, I did have questions, but not critiques. I'm more curious if there is a difference in the temp differential. For example does the benefit hold for this that love in a desert same as in the north
The data presented at 4:10 does not give units to be able to read the effect size. To be fair I just may not be familiar with this form of statistical presentation.
Slight topic-change: Trad saunas, subject's entirely in the unit; others, subject's head's outside of the unit. Thus, either breathing hot air or breathing 'cool' air. Any info on the difference?
I am not a scientist, but do my best to follow your information. It seems to me from watching this video, you did not give misinformation, rather you you just didn't go into detail about long term effects ... anyway, I have a question, which may be answered on the other video which I have not watched yet, but does the type of sauna matter, i.e., steam vs infrared? Thank you and best of the season to you :)
I think sauna slowly cooks your brain, thus reducing your anxiety, which reduces psychogenic vasoconstriction, lowering your bp, and improving your outcome. How about that?! 😜🎄😉👍🏻
Thank you for correcting yourself. You still are missing quite abit. I would suggest speaking with Ronda Patrick or one of the many true experts on sauna use and its benefits. I would suggest anyone interested in info on sauna to watch videos from experts.
Nice. Appeared in my feed within two minutes of publishing. When it comes to Sauna, I look at where it evolved. Finland. So yes, it likely is very beneficial for people living in cold climates and are deprived of sunlight. In the other hand, likely not so much for those of us living in tropical climates. Also I'd like to know your take on Melatonin wrt its role in DNA repair

"Hi everybody!"
I think sauna slowly cooks your brain, thus reducing your anxiety, which reduces psychogenic vasoconstriction, lowering your bp, and improving your outcome. How about that?! 😜🎄😉👍🏻
Wet or dey sauna? Wet sauna is good for the lungs. Moisture helps the immune system in the lungs.
Thank you for correcting yourself. You still are missing quite abit. I would suggest speaking with Ronda Patrick or one of the many true experts on sauna use and its benefits.
I would suggest anyone interested in info on sauna to watch videos from experts.
Care to get into specifics of what I missed?
Dr. Patrick doesn’t exactly answer emails 🙂
C.O. is effected by CV volume, Stroke Volume and Heart Rate, Thats 3... not 2 things
Watching this as I soak in 47°C water 😅

Is anybody studying potassium on blood pressure?
Dont mess with us! You dont make mistakes dammit!
I don't know if You mentioned it in the other video, but You sweat a lot in a sauna. Getting rid of salt will promote long term, low blood pressure.
