  • The film takes place in America in 1899, and in its principal plot depicts Bill Porter, who is the great consoler of the title, in prison. His writing skills earn him privileges from the governor and he is spared the inhumane treatment meted out to other prisoners. Porter is very much aware of the brutality around him but, mindful of his better conditions, refuses to write about prison life. He prefers to console his less-well-treated friends, and indeed all his readers, with excessively romantic fantasies in which good invariably triumphs.

The meta-levels of complexity of this film are incredible. I kind of hated this when I first saw it but then when I sat down to write a review of it for Letterboxd I realize how uniquely accomplished it is. Definitely requires multiple viewings.

Many thanks for this, I only found about Koleshov tonight after watching Pudovkin's 'Mechanics of the Brain'. It is strange watching this and thinking of what else was going on in the empire at this time. Who would be the audience? How many of the cast and crew would be alive a few years later?

In which empire? In 1933 there was no empire.
В какой империи? В 1933 году не было никакой империи.

Russia or America??? Both kinda suck, but America has freedom so it gets my vote. The movie?? No thanks, I can't stand these over Bolshevistic propaganda films. p.s I was raised Socialist. Around the 1940's Russian films become watchable and many are truly great.
