To this day, the English media AND the English fans still haven't stopped with the WW2 references when they play against us (I'm from Germany), even though the vast majority of them (or us, for that matter) wasn't even alive OR old enough to participate in it at the time. Whenever there's a match between us, expect at least a few news outlets to make references to the Blitzkrieg, bombings, nazis or other shit, and it's getting really, really old.
There's the sense of entitlement too, as other comments have already mentioned. They haven't won anything in almost 6 decades (even that win was sketchy), and yet they think they are god's gift to the sport. Premier League fans only make this worse, given how quick they are to call other leagues a Farmer's League when their own league was won by the same team seven times over the last eight years. It's the country that kickstarted the price inflation in football and pricing out smaller European teams that were doing well before (I'm thinking of my favorite club Werder Bremen for example, who were a force in the 2000s until prices started to spike and they couldn't keep up anymore once investors had a few years to do their shit), and while that isn't directly related to the English national teams, it still colors one's impressions of it to a degree. Especially given how many English fans are just... fine with clubs being owned by a single multi-billion dollar entity.
One more issue I can think of - the English seem to think they can handle alcohol far better than they actually do, and with a fan culture that seems to put importance on drinking it, you get a lot of nuisances around. Let's just say I had some really unpleasant experiences with English fans like that during the Euro...

@segafreak2000 great comment, thanks for your insight. I'm always interested in reading how other supporters feel about this particular topic. Sorry to hear that you had some issues with England fans during the Euros ☹️
World War 2 songs are distasteful and need to be stopped. Saying 'banter' doesn't make it any less disrespectful. I don't think many of the people who sing those songs know anything about the history either.
Also I agree 100% with your point about the Premier League, though I get the feeling the other big leagues in Europe are starting to catch up again now... we'll see!

Honestly pal, I agree with a lot of what you say (the point about the dodgy 66 win is a new one to me, yes I know about the ball over the line but we did win by 2 goals and we were winning until the last kick of normal time before a dodgy free kick was given to the Germans, but I didn’t know about the other points in the video). However I take issue with the self entitlement, we have won 1 tournament in nearly 100 years! We know this, you know this, everyone knows this, how can we possibly feel self entitled? If you look closer at our club fans you will notice the way they all support their clubs. It is a mixture of love, pride, loyalty, hope and devotion in spite of the fact the vast majority win nothing! Many have never seen their club side or country win ANYTHING, I myself waited from the age of 8 to 39 to see my club win a trophy. The 3 lions song is popular because it wonderfully captures all those elements and I can honestly say with a hand on my heart that the perception of the outside world to those lyrics is wide of the mark. We are culturally very different to any other nation and that is in large part due to our history, our island mentality and our relationship with this sport that we invented (sorry I just had to mention that fact).

I think one reason england are so unpopular is because the fans cry about "injustices" from several decades ago, yet as soon as they get a questionable decision in their favour they are quick to gloat about it to the other team's fans. "go home to your dutch farm and cry about it some more you lost get over it" says the same group of fans who have been crying about ronald koeman not getting a red card, for the last 31 years.

As a non England football team fan living in the UK , I don’t like the sense of entitlement. Yes, they’ve gotten to the final stages of a few recent tournaments but many fans and the media compare their football team to teams that have won many tournaments and have firmly cemented themselves in football history. England have won one World Cup, a dodgy one at that. Other nations are more realistic about their chances. Nothing wrong with wanting your team to win but some fans and the media are proper delusional. The hypocrisy of the fans and media also irritates me. They’re quick to claim they’ve hard done by with certain a decisions and love to stereotype certain other nations as cheaters and divers but have no level of self awareness, they’re just as guilty. Oh we’re English gentlemen, we don’t cheat and dive like the dirty foreigners 🙄 I could go on 😅

Haha, I actually think that cheating and play acting is something we have got better at. It's part of the game and there is an art to killing a game. I agree. They think they're Brazil, Germany or Italy, top tier, but they're more like the Netherlands, second tier. They're good, but so far, they weren't THAT good, except that one time in 1966. Did they deserve the World Cup in 1966? I don't know, we can only speculate, but I will say this: their extra time goals shouldn't have been allowed. There's the one with the ball falling on the line, but there's also goal 4 which was scored with random people having invaded the pitch. Normally, the match should have been stopped to clear them. Play shouldn't have went on. But that doesn't mean they weren't the better team, who knows how the match would have went on had their goals been disallowed?

There are many reasons, as you mention in the video, some of them are historic, some of them a result of the behaviour of English fans in the past. It doesn't matter if they are slightly better now, the damage is done and their reputation it is what it is
But on top of that there is the arrogance of the English pundits. One thing is to root for your team but another one is to dismiss the rivals as inferior.
For example, in the last euro cup, it was clear to everybody that Spain had the difficult path to the final, having to defeat Croatia, Italy, Germany and France. While England had the easy one and even so struggled to make it, relying on last minute goals and dodgy refereeing
But even so, the majority of English commentators kept saying the Spanish team was inferior, just a bunch of schoolboys, one that played in Saudi Arabia, a couple from minor Spanish teams and one that played in the premier league but wasn't any good
Some even went as far as hoping Lamine Yamal got a "good kicking" in order to "teach him a valuable lesson"
Top it up with the obnoxious "is coming home" and you have a recipe for not being very liked

I've noticed some Latin American, Spain, and some Eastern European countries do that trait with the anthems also - but England tend to do it to practically everyone whereas the others tend to boo more selectively just when against someone who they in particular consider as rivals. I've even seen England boo San Marino's or Moldova's anthem though, as if they need to for the motivation. It does go a step further. I find it disrespectful whenever anyone does it, but don't think England are the sole offenders.
But within the same sentiments, you do often find that English crowds in home games - as well as quite often English clubs in European games - boo loudly over any announcements in the stadiums for away fans as well - you know the benign stuff about how to catch their train connection, where to go etc., or relaying the away fan attendance, or telling them what's available food or drink wise for them at half time.
The mere instance of hearing 'foreign' just seems to trigger some England fans, and this is something which is more unique to them as well unlike the anthems bit. It's that kind of pettiness and small-mindedness about the fans and the media encouraging them that helps explain my feelings of finding them very hard to not want to lose.
They're sore winners as well as sore losers often.

I’m English and while I can understand some of the feelings of other fans towards England as a package (team, media, fans etc), I feel that England get an unjustified level of hate brought their way at international tournaments. None of what they do is unique to England, but other teams don’t get the hate. I’ll explain:
Media: I completely agree that the English media are derisory to any other team leading up to a World Cup or Euros, however I’ve been lucky enough to watch media in other countries where they also big up their team to the point of delusion. Where should the line be drawn where teams like Italy or France don’t cross but England does?
Fans: Similarly I watched fans of Italy get asked by media who they thought would win Euro 2024. The majority said Italy. Now take out that they were the champions going into the tournament, a lot of their main players had retired and aged out. This was a very different team to the 2021 team. Did anyone label Italy and their fans as arrogant? No because they were just fans supporting their team. Most England fans do the same and get labelled as arrogant… I don’t understand it.
As for fan trouble. I’m sorry to hear England fans were causing trouble in Germany. I find the WW2 songs disgraceful to be honest. It’s been almost 80 years since WW2 ended. However England fans weren’t the only ones getting violent. I found out through social media of the Dutch and Turkish fighting after their game but it got little to no mainstream coverage. Why? I reckon it’s because it wasn’t the English fans so it wouldn’t get eyes reading.
As for the ‘Home’ nations. I’ve heard a lot of people in Scotland, NI and Wales get the same coverage as the English when it comes to international tournaments. I don’t think that’s right. You guys should get your own programmes, because I understand it must be annoying to hear the announcers gushing over England every chance they get.

I think the trouble with England is the media hype up the team and fans, but then the same media highlight the behaviour of their own fans whenever there's a slight issue just so they've got something to write about. The land in the Americas was actually Spain, not just overseas territories. The citizens had the same rights as those in the Peninsula. The English absolutely massacred the native Americans.

      Get your facts straight!!!
The Spanish worked in alliance with some 200,000 Indigenous warriors from city-states, particularly the Tlaxcala and the Otomi to fight the Aztecs. The Aztec empire subjugated other Mexican communities and committed acts of cruelty, even human sacrifices.
The Caxcans lived in peace with the Spanish. They learned the language and were baptised. Their chief, Tenamaxtle, was loyal to the Spanish Crown.
The Timucuan lived in peace with the Spaniards. It was after the arrival of the Creek and the English to Florida that they were massacred. Only 150 Timucuan were left and joined the Spaniards to go to Cuba.
The Choctaws were expelled from their land by the English. They had to find other land but it was near where other indigenous people lived and were usually at war because of this. If they hadn't been expelled, they would have lived peacefully in their own land. Again they lived in peace with the Spanish until the arrival of the latter.
Nowadays, there are millions of Hispanics with features of indegenous people in Central and South America, something you can't see in North America. I repeat the English absolutely massacred them. That's why.

For one there's a few countries that dislike England because historical reasons like Serbia, Cyprus and Argentina with certain wars and policies. Another reason is that a large portion of England fans are super arrogant and very annoying they drink and they scream and they tend to bother other fans and also their old reputation of hooliganism from the 80's making the fans and their banners they bring a target for foreign fans. 52 banners were stolen from England fans at euro 2024. There's also a believe in Europe that English clubs and national team are favoured by UEFA. The fact England boo national anthems of random countries like Slovenia or Slovakia that is annoying to people but if against rivals it's not as bad that happens everywhere. in short England are disliked because historical reasons in politics annoying arrogant fans and the believe that England get favoured by UEFA. The same views towards England are generally felt in the international Rugby Union community as well, and for similar reasons. Only South Africa comes close being disliked as much worldwide.
And the way the media talks about 'Team GB' in the olympics too, mainly from a position of English agency over spilling into British identity, without the self-awareness to put a brake on it.
They're probably the No4. most disliked country in the Olympics on a global average, only behind the USA - who are similar to the Team GB machine in annoyance style and lack of self-awareness stakes only on steroids, China - because they win loads and aren't always perceived to join in the olympic spirit and community, and Russia - for obvious current geopolitical reasons, plus lots of doping cases the past couple of decades.
England only get a reprieve in the dislike stakes in the Intl Cricket community because both Australia and India have seemed to make it their mission to outmatch England in the obnoxiousness stakes the past couple of decades, relegating England down the dislike pecking order. I mean to this day English football league is the best in the world (and has always been). I also loved 1990 English team (I was just 7 y.o. and was my first world cup). Peter Shilton, David Platt, Paul Gascoigne, Stuart "Psycho" Pearce, Bryan Robson, Chris Waddle, Peter Beardsley, Gary Lineker, ... amazing team. I started hating England from the Manchester United era... this was the first generation that media was over-hyping (I'm not saying Beckham, Scholes, Nevile, Sheringham, Ince were bad players, no they were one of the greatest in football), but I just hated them because the media. To be frank 1998 English squad could have win it all.
About today's Englad... I don't really understand the hate. Jude Bellignham is in reallity one of the greatest players in the world right now. I don't think he is over-rated. There are plenty talant in today's squad and it gained a lot of success - 2018 - World Semis, 2020 Euro Final, 2022 World QuarterF (but let's be real France is great team, if France wasn't on England's path they could had played in the Final), 2024 Euro Final... This is pretty good run. And if England's fan demand the team play "atractive" football, just remeber Brazil in 1982 and 1986... best players, that played amazing football, but won nothing. In recent years the success of the English Premier League - which is widely regarded as the best domestic league in the world and certainly by far the wealthiest and most followed globally - might be a reason for some resentment, which might lead some opposition fans to prefer other national teams to England.

Why don't I like England? And I'm saying this as someone who prior to 2016 even supported England over my own country when they played.
    1. Politics, especially Brexit which was predicated on anti-European sentiments. I'm a loyal European, so I support my European brothers against outsiders.
    2. Violent and arrogant fans acting like it's their God-given right to win everything. You earn trophies on the pitch, you're not entitled to them by virtue of being born.
    3. English media. English tabloids are absolute trash and they're saying what the average person thinks/says. They're also related to point 1.

The refereeing at the 1966 World Cup is the contentious issue. Brazil and Pele were practically kicked out of the tournament, Uruguay had two players sent off and a blatant penalty denied in the quarter-final against West Germany and Argentina captain Rattin was sent off against England for no apparent reason while England's Stiles wasn't sent off for an awful foul on France's Jacques Simon in a first round game and in extra-time in the final Englsnd are awarded a crucial third goal when the linesman couldn't possibly have known if the whole ball had crossed the line (TV stills today show the whole ball probably didn't cross the line). On top of that, England should have played their semi-final with Portugal at Goodison Park but it was moved to Wembley by Fifa's English president Sir Stanley Rous, meaning Portugal had to travel to London by train the night before the game. These are some of the reasons why mention of the 1966 World Cup stirs up anger abroad.
