I must say that there's something meditative and healing about how these two gentlemen speak. I was down with a pounding headache and picked up this video to listen to with eyes closed. Voila! My headache came under control by the time it finished.
Shekhar Gupta ji is the most vocal supporter of (mostly indiscriminate) infrastructure projects such as Mumbai's coastal road, citing crumbling infrastructure in our cities. While the latter is true, the approach towards it CANNOT be indiscriminate, cannot be ONLY car-focused. There are ways to do it that are both ecologically and economically sound. People with voice such as Shekhar ji must think more critically about these things, not be burdened with old pre-conceived notions.
I think the speaker is being too critical of India. When India is the only major country to reach it's 2° goals, how is it doing worse than china or canada? Regarding EV, we are building the largest EV factory for 2 wheelers and the race for EV 4 wheelers is picking up in India too. As usual, we are behind China by about a decade, why be so negative about the Indian scenario? I think this is nothing short of fear mongering. Even if sea level rises by 2 meters in 2050, the coastal areas of mumbai is so valuable that they would build some protection like the dutch did, in coming years.

They completely decimated very advanced cities like Baghdad to the point of no recovery and had profound effects on advanced civilizations like China, Persia and even Kievan Rus. And they weren’t Buddhist, they were Shamanists mainly practicing Tengri (but were known to be religiously tolerant). There are even theories as to what would have happened if Genghis’ army would have crossed the Urals to reach Europe (much like predecessors Huns). However, he’s right that they weren’t extractive like later colonial powers. But this is because they existed in a pre-industrial society where agricultural revenue was more valuable. They didn’t need any raw materials en masse to mass produce products or have trade monopolies. That concept just didn’t exist.
On his point of Colonization: Thailand being more advanced because they “innovated” is actually factually incorrect. Thailand was a pseudo vassal state situated between the British and French Empires. They just struck successful treaties with these powers. Nepal did the same and wasn’t technically colonized but they aren’t developed. Also, Hong Kong and Singapore were colonized but emerged as one of the most developed regions in all of Asia. Taiwan was also colonized by Japan which had a similar result. Japan, on the other hand, industrialized itself based on Western model during the Meiji Restoration because they were forced to open up. Before US’ Perry Expedition knowledge exchange was limited to a small pocket, ie. Nagasaki and the country was highly feudal with not much technological advancement. Colonization in general has been highly destructive and extractive to most countries, but beneficial to few because of the industrial knowledge and structural reform they left behind. Depends on case to case and how the rule was. For eg. on the same island- French colonized Haiti was a disaster whereas Spanish colonized Dominic Republic is way wealthier.

In real life we had Rajdeep Sardesai giving wrong news on live TV.. Barkha Dutt, Karan Thapar and Rajdeep were busy in building a negative image of Modi ji,... That led to them falling from public's eye and grace... So if journalists remain true to their profession their image too will be positive in the publics eye... The position of the inferior nations is similar to that of our freeloading farmers who want to be paid for not polluting. Not a dime should be given to third world countries who pollute. Instead, their access to western markets should be restricted to get them to lower their carbon production
The western world got rich by polluting the most. How fair is it for them to ask the third world to switch to green energy which is going to cost them money that could instead be used for infrastructure & health care?
@@tron8421 The western world got rich through inventions and technology which they made available to the rest of us and saved mankind. They gave us electricity, healthcare, law and Oder, banking, seeds and fertilzers,,,,,,the list is endless. So while there activities did pollute the planet, mankind is better off for it.
It is not at all fair of them to ask us to use green energy. We should act in our self interest and use whatever kind of energy that suits us.
What is truly shameful is our demanding to be paid for lowering our carbon emissions.
As for money to be used for infrastructure etc, whatever money that is given to the inferior nations will be squandered on freeloading farmers , vast armies of government employees and defence personnel and PSU employees.

Most of the wealth that west got is exploited from Africa and India. Yes, they made innovations, but the raw materials to process were looted or procured at a cheap price from the now third world.
What's there to be ashamed to ask for assistance in shifting to a greener economy? Maybe India can afford to make that transition on its own. But what about the African & South American nations?
