  • For episode 131 we did a discography ranking and discussion of one of our favorite bands - Immortal. There was only one way to do this properly and that was to tap into the grim and frostbitten spirit of Blashyrkh by adorning our faces with the war paint of old and channeling the Northern Chaos Gods. There was an ice storm across the country the day we recorded this and I think this was no coincidence.

    I remember buying Battles in the North, being blown away, & then playing it over & over...
    Then I read in a fanzine at the time, (not sure which one, Nordic Vision...?)
    & the mag said; (paraphrasing)
    "We have no other alternative other than to name Immortals Battles In the North the best album release of the year"

      Hell yes. Pure holocaust as well. After sons of Northern darkness I moved on but I liked it. At thr heart of winter came from out of nowhere though when it was new. I used to play every song from every album up to heart when I was in university. I heard pure holocaust first

    Hi guys! Thank you for doing Immortal! I wonder what you think of the new album? It's so interesting to see how other people reason about the albums compared to how I feel about them. For me, production is the biggest issue I have on Immortal and I'm refering to the crappy production that Peter Tagtgren has done on many albums. For me, he and his production "skills" have ruined many potentially great albums the last 20 years or so. My opinon of course. That is why my ranking of Immortal's albums look like this:
    1. Pure Holocaust (no competition really!)
    2. Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism
    3. Battles in the North
    4. War Against All
    5. All Shall Fall (sounds good even if Tagtgren does his best to ruin it)
    I don't listen to the other albums because of the production. Gives me a headache. I've tried on numerous occasion but I can't stand it. Sorry. I def associate Immortal with their early sound and when people talk about later albums and how good they are I don't get it. It's not really Immortal to me. Somethings missing even if they'd had another production. Demonaz does a great bringing back the old school and I like his voice too especially on War Against All.

      That’s interesting man I can see feeling like something’s missing on Abbath era material if your a bigger fan of the early stuff since the style and production changed so much. What did you think of Tagtrens production on Northern Chaos Gods?

    • @michaelkarlsson5966
      @michaelkarlsson5966 Год назад

      @@intothecombine6169 yeah, I always liked Abbath's voice and there are great stuff musically on those album, of course. I didn't like the production on Northern Chaos Gods. To my ears their best sounding album with Tägtgren is All Shall Fall. What did you guys think of War Against All? Cheers! :)

    Black metal that gets criticized on its production is so silly. Its supposed to sound like shit, thats its charm. Blizzard beast is top 5 for me. Very underrated

    • @sothis1448
      @sothis1448 8 месяцев назад

      It's not supposed to sound like "shit". The majority of the classics have a fine production job, that's no excuse for a poor production job, that being said, this alone is not reason enough to put this album below the stadium rock crud that succeeded it.
