How Murray's 'Shift-on-the-go/fly' works

  • For years Murray used a system called 'Shift-on-the-go' also called 'Shift-on-the-fly' in their gear drive, front engine lawn tractors. The transaxle is not anything special, just a regular 6-speed manual-shift Peerless. The trick is in the clutching system, watch and learn.

    i had one just like that one . had a flat pulley on the trans , even though the v part of belt was what made contact with pulley . squealed when you first let clutch out , but worked well . only time i ever saw a flat pulley that didn't contact flat side of belt .

    the late 80's murrays are exactly candy apple red. I got some candy apple red spray paint at walmart (had the roundish cap on it) and its a 99% perfect match. lol

    Interesting the way that system works!!!......Cool video. We use to have a old sears tractor when we lived at our old house that I think MAY have had something like this...but then again maybe it didnt. I dont recall for sure what it did or didnt have. I do know that it was from the early to mid 80s or so. Cool video man. :)

    I own a 13.5 hp Murray. Ir runs good and has always worked for me. I'm looking at getting a little more out of it by installing a plow for snow removal. I know that Murray did some ride ons with Craftsman and I wondered if the Craftman accessories would work for a Murray.

    I've got a Dynamark design that has the pulley in the front by the right brake pedal. It doesn't fully leave enough tension when the clutch/brake is disengaged to stop the rear trans. pulley from moving, so it is hard to shift with that trans. pulley always moving.

    I miss the all metal tractors....now they have cheap yet expensive plastic and fiberglass ones

    • @stinkycheese804
      @stinkycheese804 5 лет назад

      Really? What's it matter? The frame is metal and on anything decent the fr. axle is cast iron. The deck is metal so all you're talking about is the cover and wheel wells which just serve to improve cosmetics and keep grass from flying where it shouldn't. Plastic does that job fine so long as it isn't so thin that after a few years of sun it gets brittle and cracks apart.

    • @charliemccahill2131
      @charliemccahill2131 2 года назад

      @@stinkycheese804 the plastic body does fade and crack because of the sun and it is a lot weaker

    im sure you could.. in one of lynolsoffice's video he swapped a hydrostatic sears for a 5 speed manual.. put something beefy in there like a 5 speed from an old FORD YT16.

    We had a murray like that with a 14.5 engine sad to say the starter seized and we trashed it with no tires

    • @stinkycheese804
      @stinkycheese804 5 лет назад +1

      Seems like a silly thing to do when you consider you could put new tires on for about $120, a new starter for what, $50 if you can't just clean and lube it, so with $170 in it, it will work again, use it for a few more seasons and sell it for $300 eventually = Profit.

    With these shift on the fly systems does the rear transaxle actually shift? No matter what I do it seems like the rear big pulley on the rear spins the same? This mower is slow.. and second speed is slower.. What could be wrong?

    • @stinkycheese804
      @stinkycheese804 5 лет назад

      You probably need a new belt tensioner, maybe just to lube the pivot on it so it moves freely, or possibly your belt is so stretched it is beyond the range of the tensioner, or so old it has hardened and is slipping on the pulley, or the pulley is gunked up with grass/goop and too slick so again the belt is slipping. If in doubt, do the cleaning first, then lube, get a new belt next since it will need one eventually anyway, and if it still is too slow, get a new tensioner. This assumes that you still have full throttle, if your throttle cable has stretched you might need to adjust the tensioner on it. lol, now I'm sure you'll be back to read my reply 7 years later but maybe someone else having the same problem will see this post.
