Brilliant! Thanks for posting Harry Smith. Not that many people know it, but for those who do: Harry Smith's done something far more impressive than change the world -- he's changed us.
Thanks for posting. Harry was a dear / annoying friend and I never saw this footage but I heard the tale. He told me Anthology of American Folk Music was intended as a last gasp of oral tradition, just as mass-marketed recordings, radio and movies changed America. We celebrated Harry's life at the Chelsea soon after his leaving us.
Right. Knowing Harry changed my life. I knew him in the late 1970s and early 1980s and we had many wonderful times together, and he made some marvelous contributions to my magazine, BIKINI GIRL. So good that he received this award.
That merit award he carried away sat for years on a shelf in the storage room of a small publisher I worked for in the Hotel Chelsea. I think it eventually made it into Harry's archive.
Thanks so much for posting; I know this clip is embedded in the magnificent CD reissue package from 1997 (which I still revere), but I don’t know anyone who still has a CD drive on their PC.
In 1991 Harry Smith received a Chairman's Merit Award at the Grammy Awards ceremony for his contribution to American Folk Music. Upon receiving the award, he proclaimed, "I'm glad to say my dreams came true. I saw America changed by music." Harry Everett Smith died at the Chelsea Hotel, NYC, Room 328, on November 27, 1991.
I am currently listening to the Anthology of American Folk Music. Since it's currently out of print, I had to get a second-hand copy from England for almost a hundred bucks, thru eBay. I've reached "Judgement" by Sister Mary Nelson. So far, the collection has been mind-boggling to me, because as a music fan, I see the US has a music history I was never aware of, and all these songs and performers are new to me! YES, these are transfers from 78 rpm records manufactured in the 1920's, so what do you expect?? (these records are one hundred years old!!!) But I'm glad I bought this, and I think it's one of the best things I've ever spent money on! (Well, if you're a music fanatic...)
Great! Never knew this footage of the award ceremony existed, ran across it just looking for the music~also~see the ubiquitous "deleted video's' from the list~Why in the Hell would any of the vid's be deleted from this??Incompre-repre-hensible!!!

My mother was a very close friend to Harry and told me John & Yoko looked up to him as a mentor of sorts! I was 14 when I knew him, a nice guy!
wonderful to see this. he is one of the two biggest influences in my life and a mind blowing friend.
