I still boot up some old stuff these days. The oldest one is probably Ultima Underworld which gave inspiration for Souls series much, much later. And had more advanced engine than Doom... actually they inspired some nerd named Carmack to make his own.
I grew up in the early 2000s, and my parents were avid gamers so they had a expansive collection of PS1 and 2 games. I remember playing Risk for the first time on PS1, racing around in Lego Racers, and when my mom got her acer aspire, playing Lego Universe for the short time it was active. The foggy memories I have of Lego Universe were some of the most fun moments I remember having in any game. Building my own spaceship while other random players watch and programming a basic little robot in my own little world are some core memories for me.
Super Solver! I remember playing the reading comprehension game with a friend on his mom's computer when I was a kid, but I could never remember the name of it. Just the trenchcoat and the goofy robots. Thanks for highlighting this one Mike!
jesus when the screen started rotating during the treasure mountain sequence (also totally remember that game) unironically thought my monitor was falling for an instant and scared the shit out of me
One of the first DOS games I ever played was "girlfriend construction set" because it was on the PC my dad got from one of his co-workers. I didn't understand anything about it because I was like 7, but it amazed me because before then, I only played a video game once before (This barely counts as a video game though)
I really enjoy the juxtaposition of Mike and friends usual gaming content with the occasional deep dive, review, or opinion talk-piece! I always get excited when I see these videos on the channel because Mike is very good at framing a topic to best display it's merits and flaws. Keep it up man!
Hey Mike, I just love that you've been working on many different small/large videos aside from the main series with good ol' Zach. It's nice and I like it a lot :)!
I still play the old games i played as a kid and most of them still gives me a good time. Then there are time games that i promised myself when i was young that im going to play someday. Those are harder to get into nowadays.
My DOS games I played in 2004 as a kid where: -unofficial DOS remake of Super Mario Bros -Aladdin -Prince of Persia -Flight of the Amazon Queen -Duck Tales -Rome: Pathway to Power -Cobra Mission: Panic in Cobra City -Metal & Lace: Battle of Robo Babes The last 2 kinda kick start my puberty a bit too early...
Still watching the video, but i had to say that i love these video essays. Regardless of the subejct, i must watch all of them. I see a bit of MATN influence, am i wrong? In any case, you're doing great, and keep them coming. Sending love to you, Anne, Zach and her miss, and Kirk! (edit: FYI San Marino is an autonomous republic in the middle of Italy. Very similar to the Vatican)
Dude when I was like 5 I would fire up the old tandy and pretend to play kings quest and have no idea what I was doing. but failing over and over was fun to me
Lots of MS-DOS games... and pretty much _every_ Apple II game lol (I was exaggerating, but Apple 2 pretty much had a chokehold on the educational market back then)
A video game I played that was this old was Navy S*E*A*L (1989) by COSMI on a 3.5" floppy disk that was my father's. To this day I have no idea how to play it but I remember needing to drop from a helicopter into the water. And I'm pretty sure I died anything I did. Also Megarace is a family favorite game. So glad it got in GOG.
I had the old Reader Rabbit and Math Rabbit. And a dozen other edutainment games. And "Captain Bible." But I also had Commander Keen, Jill of the Jungle, Dark Ages, and a host of Sierra point and clicks, so it wasn't all bad.
Oh man wow. I'm not much younger than you, but i remember a good ammount of these from my childhood. My uncle was an avid collector of old games, so he taught me DOS. Since i was the only one in my family that really bothered to learn it i was my dads IT guy as a five year old. All to play video games, what times. Granted most of these were almost novelty antiques by the time unc let me get ahold of them. and stuff like our NES, windows 98 desktop, and eventual PS1 (that we picked up in the PS2 era when it was dirt cheap) would shape much more of my early gaming repertoire DOS is what got baked into my early childhood subconscious.
MS-DOS was always Doom and Duke Nukem 3D for me. I grew up using an Apple IIc, a computer with no hard drive and the keyboard had the 5.25" floppy drive inside it. My go to games on that were Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego and Spy Hunter.
I played PC more than any console growing up. I ended up playing a lot of Red Alert, Rocket Jockey, and Mechwarrior when I was a kid, along with the old Sierra adventure games. DOS and early Windows games were kinda weird but often good.
I played a lot of Sim City, but not for the game itself. It's because you could import those levels into other 'Sim' games like Sim Copter and Streets of Sim City; the later being freaking amazing!
I had Outnumbered! I got it after a math tutor I had in second grade introduced me to it. I always remembered it, but forgot the name. Thanks a ton, Mike.
If I am not mistaken, the Chess minigame got a modern glow-up along with the satisfying death animations. I forgot what the name was but I stumbled upon its gameplay video in RUclips a while back.
... fun fact: klondike is solitaire but a diffrent name, really 'solitaire' just refers to any game that can be played with a deck of cards by yourself, and Klondike is the most popular one (alongside free cell, spider solitaire, etc.)
Don't feel bad brother. I literally experienced the exact same journey as well. ALL THE WAY back to the good ol floppy FLOPPY disc. Man how far we have come. MS DOS.... I still remember playing Space Invaders in the classroom...
I would live to see Zach & Mike do a chill co-op full playthrough of PKMN Snap 64 that descends into needless criticism of each other's photography skills...
I'll admit my first games were Humongous point and clicks. Fun stuff and very colorful, and I guess my parents were happier about it along with Magic School Bus. Not saying Dos had no good games but it looks pretty archaic even before my time.
I have working game boy color, and my working games including links awakening right on my nightstand, can't wait for that video and I hope you try some of the newer ones that are actually good some day like metroid dread
Floppy disk? You mean the save icon? Hahah jk im old too. I called a nitendo switch just "nintendo." I still remember my nephews reaction when asked "hows your nintendo games." I instantly heard the mission failed sound effect from GTA5
Mike if you ever get the chance to look into Jurassic Park Trespasser you won't be disappointed. It's abandonware these days, free to download online. Just an idea.
I was expecting Mike to end the video off by saying his PC gaming slowed down because he discovered sex or the military... I've been listening to campfire tales for too long XD
I still boot up some old stuff these days. The oldest one is probably Ultima Underworld which gave inspiration for Souls series much, much later. And had more advanced engine than Doom... actually they inspired some nerd named Carmack to make his own.
Mike’s here to take us back to the past
To play the MS games that suck DOS.
Damn now that’s a throwback lmao

I read your comment before seeing that part, and then had the exact same reaction after.
One of the first DOS games I ever played was "girlfriend construction set" because it was on the PC my dad got from one of his co-workers.
I didn't understand anything about it because I was like 7, but it amazed me because before then, I only played a video game once before (This barely counts as a video game though)
I use to play Leisure Suit Larry back when I was around the same age...
Math blaster was the go to game back in elementary school. Before people found out how to download halo on school computers.
I still play the old games i played as a kid and most of them still gives me a good time.
Then there are time games that i promised myself when i was young that im going to play someday. Those are harder to get into nowadays.
I've found the early console games I grew up with - 8 and 16 bit era - have aged a lot better than the more advanced, disc based stuff.
Mike is taking the slow but sure steps to becoming a vtuber. Wonder if Zank is gonna follow in his webbed feetsteps
Treasure Panda is probably the closest you're gonna get
Is the duck Mike’s fursona?
@@bloodywilliam3083 he's said before he's not a furry cus he has scales. So I don't think so.
Only of Zach becomes a hunter trying to get the duck, that would be funny.
@@wmk0078 THIS IS A SCALIE HOUSE!
Oh my god I haven't seen Coaster in years. I remember playing the hell out of that.
My DOS games I played in 2004 as a kid where:
-unofficial DOS remake of Super Mario Bros
-Aladdin
-Prince of Persia
-Flight of the Amazon Queen
-Duck Tales
-Rome: Pathway to Power
-Cobra Mission: Panic in Cobra City
-Metal & Lace: Battle of Robo Babes
The last 2 kinda kick start my puberty a bit too early...
This is such a good idea. Especially when your modern gaming PC is broken, just spin up DOS on your grandma's pentium
I was stuck with a 386
At this point I'm pretty sure I could run a lot of the stuff I used to play on a lightly modded TI-80.
Still watching the video, but i had to say that i love these video essays. Regardless of the subejct, i must watch all of them. I see a bit of MATN influence, am i wrong?

I recognized Mega Race after 2 seconds of that clip! Thank you for reminding me of that game.
Dude when I was like 5 I would fire up the old tandy and pretend to play kings quest and have no idea what I was doing. but failing over and over was fun to me
Lots of MS-DOS games seemed like they were trying to trick children in the computer lab into doing math
Lots of MS-DOS games... and pretty much _every_ Apple II game lol (I was exaggerating, but Apple 2 pretty much had a chokehold on the educational market back then)
I dunno, I didn't fall for it if so. I get the impression it turned me into a wordsmith, but I ran a Lotta fuggin text-based adventure games.
Mickey Mouse game looks pretty decent! Also cool Math Starfield from 90's
It's good to see these old games being covered.
A video game I played that was this old was Navy S*E*A*L (1989) by COSMI on a 3.5" floppy disk that was my father's. To this day I have no idea how to play it but I remember needing to drop from a helicopter into the water. And I'm pretty sure I died anything I did.

My brother and I were talking about Supersolvers this past month. It was one of the few games our PC with Windows 3.1 could run.
Oh man wow. I'm not much younger than you, but i remember a good ammount of these from my childhood. My uncle was an avid collector of old games, so he taught me DOS. Since i was the only one in my family that really bothered to learn it i was my dads IT guy as a five year old. All to play video games, what times. I started with the Jumpstart CD games. I still quote the noun song occasionally.
YOOO INCREDIBLE MACHINE
the map creator was ludicrously good too
MS-DOS was always Doom and Duke Nukem 3D for me.
I grew up using an Apple IIc, a computer with no hard drive and the keyboard had the 5.25" floppy drive inside it. My go to games on that were Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego and Spy Hunter.

Mike's ability to quickly solve math problems makes so much sense now.
The one i still have the .exe in my current computer is prince Persia 1&2, gotta love that MS -DOS logo
These videos are very entertaining, I'm glad you're making more of those
Perhaps having no childhood wasn't so bad.
21:09
Ah, so many memories of DOS. Jill of the Jungle was one of my favorites. Can't tell you what year it was that I played it, but it was a good one!
I played a lot of Sim City, but not for the game itself. It's because you could import those levels into other 'Sim' games like Sim Copter and Streets of Sim City; the later being freaking amazing!
Man I forgot about some of these! Thanks Mike!
I had Outnumbered!
I got it after a math tutor I had in second grade introduced me to it.
I always remembered it, but forgot the name. Thanks a ton, Mike.
My guilty pleasure from that time period? Hoyle's Board Games. I used to play that for hours.
If I am not mistaken, the Chess minigame got a modern glow-up along with the satisfying death animations. I forgot what the name was but I stumbled upon its gameplay video in RUclips a while back.
The only one of these I remember is Word Munchers, which had an equally as chad brother Number Munchers
For real, though. My first video game was Speedy Eggbert
... fun fact: klondike is solitaire but a diffrent name, really 'solitaire' just refers to any game that can be played with a deck of cards by yourself, and Klondike is the most popular one (alongside free cell, spider solitaire, etc.)

I remember this game too, only barely
Don't feel bad brother. I literally experienced the exact same journey as well. ALL THE WAY back to the good ol floppy FLOPPY disc. Man how far we have come. MS DOS.... I still remember playing Space Invaders in the classroom...
The one DOS game was Frame Fighters, which is exactly how it sounds.
Rodent's revenge was a classic.
The incredible machine was great for anyone.
And a moment of silence for all the Mel's we killed in some manner.
This this was Great Keep up the good work Mike 👍
I loved sim town!!! And all the edutainment!!!
I would live to see Zach & Mike do a chill co-op full playthrough of PKMN Snap 64 that descends into needless criticism of each other's photography skills...
Hugo's House of Horrors actually scared me as a kid!
Played Carmen Sandiego . Dad gave me an encyclopedia. I used to look up the flags
The person who made that fox race mod for Fallout 4 needs to make a mod so Mike can become a duck in 4 too.
Man this is chill. Love it. :)
I was beginning to worry that the Disney coaster game was a vivid hallucination I had in high school
some of mine was the creatures n putt putt games
You're telling me sim city CAME with disasters? You didn't have to pay an extra bazillion dollars to get features in the first city sim?
TROGGLE TROUBLE MATH!
My life is complete now.
oh god, megarace was my JAM when i was a kid
My game was where StarCraft legend of the dragoon and metal gear solid for Nintendo and PlayStation 1
Math Blaster Plus! Yeah boi, that's my childhood right there!
Edit: Treasure Mountain! I played the crap out of that!
Oregon Trail 2 was my jam.
I'll admit my first games were Humongous point and clicks. Fun stuff and very colorful, and I guess my parents were happier about it along with Magic School Bus. Not saying Dos had no good games but it looks pretty archaic even before my time.
Love your ducksona
This is weird, I just had to read about the development of MS-DOS for school like an hour ago 🤨
You should play ultima 7 through 9 that DOS gaming nostalgia...
This just makes me miss dinonauts
Baghdad, Egypt
I think Zach is going to have some words with you, Mike lol
I am pretty sure you and Zach are just a few years older than I am because I remember these games from when I was in elementary school.
BATTLE CHESS! 👊👊
Ah, yes, the Simcity apocalypse.
I have working game boy color, and my working games including links awakening right on my nightstand, can't wait for that video and I hope you try some of the newer ones that are actually good some day like metroid dread
I FUCKING REMEMBER THE SUPER SOLVERS SERIES I PLAYED THAT ALL THE TIME AS A CHILD
Floppy disk? You mean the save icon? Hahah jk im old too. I called a nitendo switch just "nintendo." I still remember my nephews reaction when asked "hows your nintendo games." I instantly heard the mission failed sound effect from GTA5
Mickey's mirror image is not actually mirrored
Huh, Didn't expect this, but it should be cool.
god, the music from the 3d dinosaur game reminded me of the 3d body game one. XD
What about the Descent games?
Oh my god, mega race! I forgot about that one! Apparently it's available on steam!
I hope street rods is in this video
Dude, remember Pong?
Ah yes the era of good old pay by the minute mmos. I distinctly remember racking up a 185 dollar internet bill. This was in 1980s money too.
maaaan i miss floppy disks... i know im weird but seriously i loved that time of gaming
*Points at screen* I played a version of 3D Dinosaur Adventure! Gods I put so many hours into that
Mmm, yes Baghdad, Egypt and San Marino, Greece.
Mike if you ever get the chance to look into Jurassic Park Trespasser you won't be disappointed. It's abandonware these days, free to download online. Just an idea.
27:51 I think that's going to age very poorly...
I'm glad I grew up with Nintendo 64 and Gameboy.
Mike here with the based taste. How about Magic Carpet?
I was expecting Mike to end the video off by saying his PC gaming slowed down because he discovered sex or the military...
I've been listening to campfire tales for too long XD
Unless one of them is an ultima game or SimCity? No no they do not.. EDIT: I forgor king quest.
holy s*** I didn't know how metal battle chest was.
Baghdad, Egypt?
I remember trash zapper!
woah hey im here for the good content
I grew up when the game you got was the full game
23:40 Damn, that ride animation is smooth. I've seen a lot worse in new-ish releases.
dang, how did young mike get the starfield beta
I remember math blasters was on a flash site our teacher used
Edit: the realization of games recycled fpr edge you ma kashinz
Should've made Zach play these games to learn basic maths
😮😅😊 I've played a couple back in my day 😅😂😊
torture zach and make him play these dos games with you sometime.
i forget if Scorched Earth is MSDOS or not
Nothin wrong with bein edjumacated
Au contraire! Kings Quest IV was very educational. It taught you that life was capricious, unfair, and refused to explain itself.
I am 44. How old are you and Zach? I ad figured you two at about 38 40
I think Zach is like 36-37 so Mike should be in that range
