The problem with this Emperor in this story, as I have seen in real life, is that, he never finds the fault within himself. He finds fault in all the women surrounding him. Yes, some of the women are calculating, but that's what you signed up for. The Emperor is calculating as well. He would not severely punish women from reputable background. I truly believe that while Yawan had the ambition to rise in rank, she wasn't evil by nature. The severe abuse from Jia made her unstable. And being very young, once the Emperor started to groom her, she was lost. The Emperor is a narcissist, which given his position and the way he was raised, makes perfect sense. And when a narcissist grooms someone, there are only two possible outcomes: The person that is being groomed becomes severely traumatized and mentally ill - things like BPD, Borderline, PTSD etc Or the person turns into another narcissist. Narcissism is also a trauma response but in a very different way from things like ptsd. Yawan geniuenly had no other possible outcome but to become crazy in one way or another.
Did you even watch the series? YanWan had always aimed for the top, that’s why she left LYC. But as things didn’t turn out as she had hoped, she went back to him. However, as she had another chance to climb up the ranks, she ditched him a second time. That really woke LYC up as to who she really was. It's fictional. Though all the names and times of death etc line up. But there are things that are changed/adapted. For example Hongli married Ruyis one year after the main wife, not one day. Ruyis had 5 children etc. But she did cut her hair away on a trip and was sent back to the palace and the management of the harem given to another. 15th prince is the one who became emperor but was not good and the kingdom went downhill.
Tuberculosis was very common back then & there was no treatment for it. It spreads by respiratory droplets, & coughing. Anyone living in close quarters or being intimate could get it from a household member who had it.

Also, I think that a maid couldn’t “escape” from the palace. It only had 4 gates that were closely watched. If a maid needed to go out, I assume that her exist must have needed to be approved, either by her mistress or a department. Without an approval, I’d doubt that she could go out.

I truly believe that while Yawan had the ambition to rise in rank, she wasn't evil by nature.
The severe abuse from Jia made her unstable. And being very young, once the Emperor started to groom her, she was lost.
The Emperor is a narcissist, which given his position and the way he was raised, makes perfect sense. And when a narcissist grooms someone, there are only two possible outcomes:
The person that is being groomed becomes severely traumatized and mentally ill - things like BPD, Borderline, PTSD etc
Or the person turns into another narcissist. Narcissism is also a trauma response but in a very different way from things like ptsd.
Yawan geniuenly had no other possible outcome but to become crazy in one way or another.
Did you even watch the series? YanWan had always aimed for the top, that’s why she left LYC. But as things didn’t turn out as she had hoped, she went back to him. However, as she had another chance to climb up the ranks, she ditched him a second time. That really woke LYC up as to who she really was. It's fictional. Though all the names and times of death etc line up. But there are things that are changed/adapted. For example Hongli married Ruyis one year after the main wife, not one day. Ruyis had 5 children etc. But she did cut her hair away on a trip and was sent back to the palace and the management of the harem given to another. 15th prince is the one who became emperor but was not good and the kingdom went downhill.
