What I really admire about the writing of this show is how it circles back to topics and issues raised in earlier episodes. In episode 5 Ruyi meets the Italian court painter and they have a conversation. She explains to him that an Emperor can only be painted with the Empress, his legal wife. He tells her that in the West a man can only marry one woman and not have any concubines and that a woman can seek a legal seperation from her husband when the affection between them is gone (both things aren't entirely true but that's a seperate matter) which fascinates Ruyi because both things are novel concepts to her. This conversation is early foreshadowing to Ruyi's and Hongli's love arc. Hongli has never considered bending the portrait rule for Ruyi- the woman he knew since childhood and that has been with him through thick and thin- but on a whim, a passing infatuation with a woman he barely knew, he flouted that rule like it meant nothing. In episode 81 Ruyi cuts her hair (husband and wife knot a lock of their hair when they are married) to symbolically sever their ties and in episode 86 she refuses to take back the scroll and seal despite Hongli's insisting and cuts herself out of their official portrait. To me it sends a strong message that in her mind SHE has divorced Hongli and that no matter whether he takes away her seal or deposes her or not, he doesn't hold that power over her. She doesn't care what the "official story" will be. Despite the fact that there is no legal precedent and that there won't be any legal acknowledgement of her "divorcing" Hongli, she did this for herself and for him to see. He doesn't get to discard or uplift her according to what he feels like on any given day anymore- SHE has divorced HIM and she is done with him. No malice, just self respect.

Ruyi was done with the abuse that the emperor has done to her over the years and him saying to forget her transgressions from the many women in his harem didn’t help matters and only damns himself in her mind. I’m glad she got to be free on her terms, not the emperor’s, even at the cost of death.

Also in the scene when they finally met, when Ruyi talked to the emperor, she called herself “我/wǒ/”
instead of “臣妾 /chén qiè/“. Both mean I basically, but the second one is used by empress when they talk to the emperor.
At this point, Ruyi didn’t regard herself as his wife anymore.

    “一路保重啊”
Her final words to him are “take care on the road ahead”. She was not just talking about his trip to the hunting grounds. The emperor once told her that he was lonely and wanted her to walk step by step to his side and be together going forward. She is telling him that she’ll no longer be by his side, the future road is one where he will have to walk alone, and to take care. The writing in this show is so beautiful and so heartbreaking .

The thing is: Ruyi truly loved the emperor and endured so many challenges to the near end of her life, but he never realized it and thought he will once again win her back. He didn't even understand when Ruyi said about taking care of the road ahead. There is that egoistic part of him that claimed she will always be by his side no matter what, as in the past. But he failed to see that even the sturdiest tree that bloom for him will die at some point. Her tree did.....at the end.

I loved this part that Ruyi refused to accept the royal seal that would make her the empress again. She refused to accept his “olive branch” of reconciliation and declined his invitation to accompany him to Mongolia on a hunting trip. Then, she refused to treat her TB, preferring to die without having to see him, giving him no forgiveness, no closure. He thought everything would be hunky dory once he re-established her, but she only wanted to be “free” of the Imperial City and him. The actor Wallace Huo acted superbly here as he displayed regret, guilt and embarrassment while talking to her. Fantastic cast of actors here.

Making those scripture flags was a brilliant idea of Ruyi. First of all it is a very beautiful and respectful gesture of her towards the deceased. Secondly she can appeal towards Yanwan's conscience by showing her a tangible and visible record of all those people she harmed. It's harder to delude yourself about your own actions if there is visible evidence of them. Thirdly it makes a greater emotional impact on the Emperor on many levels. Seeing the sheer number of people Yanwan harmed and all of their names makes it harder for him to make this matter smaller than it is or allow Yanwan to sway his decision with all her excuses. It also evokes guilt in him. While he has been oblivious, fooled by Yanwan timer after time and blamed and punished other people because of it, RUYI has known for a long time who is responsible. She has known long enough to make sutra flags for each and every one of them. It must be very painful for him to realise that.
While as an outsider I personally take satisfaction from Yanwan finally getting punished for all the things she did, Ruyi doesn't "But all those people who left will never come back again".
I understand that Yanwan's punishment is cold comfort for her after all those people and relationships she lost through her. Her son Yongjing, her daughter Jingsi, her foster son Yongqi, her mother, her best male friend Yunche and Yihuan and Luyun who were her closest friends after Hailan. I am an overseas Chinese. I remembered when I was young, I was taught to be filial, to never address my elders by name, to address everyone to eat before meals, to not eat too fast and hastily with mouth open, to give honour to my ancestors, to recite the ancient poems. I was always wondering why my parents wanted to impart these values to me. These were the ancient traditions to remind me of my culture and to keep our civilisation. Now, I don't know how to even teach my daughter the language, there are so many deep meanings of each characters. So many history and meanings behind each poem. I am afraid it will die with my generation, my children will never know the beauty of their culture. I guess the modern China suffers from this as well.

Ruyi watering the dead plum and saying how she comprehended the saying "Orchid's beginning still end" is so symbolic on many levels. It's like she was telling him that their love was right there in front of him and still all he could think about was reinstating her. Her watering it was her last hope for her Hongli to come back maybe but after their meet she understood that there really was nothing for her but a luxurious life devoid of the love she deserved. I wonder if the emperor had just done a 180 and became his youthful self, would that have prompted Ruyi to maybe save herself? This episode truly leaves a bittersweet taste...
Of course, it's satisfying to see Consort Ling receiving the punishment she had - figuratively speaking - asked for since the beginning of the second half of this drama.
On the other hand... it's so heartbreaking to know that none of this will bring Ruyi happiness at the end of the day.
Even if a weight got lifted off her shoulders, nothing will erase her years of hardship she had been forced to endure thanks to the Emperor, Consort Ling, the former Empress and countless other people who saw Ruyi (or rather Ruyi's position) as a thorn in their eyes. The most frustrating person among those who had hurt Ruyi is the Emperor. Ruyi loved this man, the love between the Emperor and her were the only thing that really mattered to her (not the fancy title, the fame, the power), and he kicked her devotion with his feet - over and over again. Those last episodes were painful to watch, because Ruyi had reached her breaking point and the only excuse she got was "The past is in the past, don't let it stay on your mind". Even if he had prepared a better excuse, I don't think he had truly understood the root of Ruyi's misery: the Emperor's pride. He never saw any fault in himself. Punishing Consort Ling and "apologizing" to Ruyi did nothing to motivate him starting to question his own "faultless" existence.
Despite the frustrating ending, I thank you for your translations and for sharing this drama with us. All in all, the drama was captivating, the costumes and settings were gorgeous and the acting skills were simply magnificent. Let's be honest, Zhou Xun was the only reason I even wanted to endure those last episodes and I definitely need to search for other series she took part in.

      Greetings.
Qianlong judgement was clouded from the start with Ruyi, after the sudden of Royal Aunt (The Empress).
He was suspicious of her Aunts death. Qianlong made plans for her Aunt according to Ruyi' request.
However, when she suddenly died he became very suspicious and even asked Ruyi. Whom covered for the Dowager who first told Ruyi to take the poison. But she longed Qianlong so much and couldn't do it.
      After the suspicious death...
Even The State sent in a Royal Counsel who said it was not of The Empress Nature to do such a thing.
Ruyi in front of Qianlong and everyone vouched for the Dowager by protecting her. Instead of telling the truth.
      She wanted Qianlong....
Just to find out later down the years he would always suspect her motives and question the extents she'll go to in order to be with him. He knew how much she loved her Aunt The Empress of his Royal Father.
So, When she was accused of taking others lives, poisoning them, the false accusations of taking even her own unborn childs life and his legitimate son of her favorite Sister Consort Son' life....
Qianlong always immediately suspected her. She always had that dark cloud of suspicion in the back of his mind.
They let wicked Ling live confined to her palace, stripped of everything and forced to take the poison that she gave others without any being given the antidote after.
They...finally had her two servants that killed many for her to end her life.
The very two servants whom life she tried to end to make sure that there were no loose ends. Were sent in to end Lings life will a bowl of poison for the venomous 🐍.
Her (Consort Ling) Karma was well deserved in deed.
Unfortunately, I believe that it was Ruyi ' curse for protecting The Dowager after she poisoned her Aunt in return for Ruyi' life. She said there could not be two women oft Ula Nara Clan in the Palace. Qianlong asked her what happened Ruyi lied for his step mom to secure her position with the Emperor whom she loved and didn't want to take the poison that The Mother Dowager gave her. So she visited her Aunt in secret and gave her the poison in exchange for Ruyi' life.
This is why Ruyi did all that she dud to vindicate the others in the end thst Ling killed. Remember Consort Ling worked for the Mother Dowager. Whom Ruyi knew forced her Aunt to die with poison.
She couldn't get the Dowager..Yet she got that demon that the Dowager didn't know was working her own plans for the Throne until Ruyi exposed it all in the end
The Dowager knew Consort Ling was te reason Consort Shu took her own life after her child died. She told Consort Shu why she couldn't become pregnant at first and that the Emperor never loved her.
Ling, The Dowager, Emperor along with Lings eunuchs and servants were truly a brew of poisonous snakes. That feed off the energies of these young women and their children.
Ling was Ruyi Karma for the secret she held about the her own Aunts death. I order to be with her love. Whom the Dowager told Ruyi she wouldn't be with and needed to drink the poison if she wanted he Royal Aunt the Empress to live.
She sacrificed telling the truth to gain the of her life that she wasn't willing to give up at that time...
Until it was too late after years of seeing it was all for nothing.
The Heavens was trying to remove Mother Dowager then. She was also the cause of Qianlong (The Emperors Real Mom) death.
But Ruyi didn't expose her when the Emperor told her he had planned to take care of her in another palace as Ruyi requested. So why did she died?
He was suspicious of Ruyi every since.
      That was Ruyi curse.
Whether she knows it or not...
The Dowager made blood sacrifice to spare Ruyi whom covered up for her not knowing the life events that would be before her for being apart of such a wicked deed.
She only had eyes for Qianlong.
And was willing to endure all things in order to be with her youth lover; As The Han Princess Rong describe it when asking Ruyi of her and the Emperors Love. After he sent Ruyi to her in order to coach The Han Princess into not committing suicide. Due to her grieving her love that died trying to cme after her on her journey to the Royal Palace to e with Qianlong.
      Moving forward :
Notice...every times there's a suspicious death or Ruyi' guard Ling Lunche is always thrown in the emperors face to blind him...
      He automatically suspects Ruyi?
For one it's because Qianlong was "Suspicious" that Ruyi covered up her Aunts death and protected his step mother (The Dowager). He felt like she would do anything to be with him. Also he suspected the Empress when she did speak up for Ruyi. Feeling as she was paying Ruyi for her loyalty to keep the Dowager secret. Also remember the Dowager had many on the consorts like Shu and Ling working in her favor. Qianlong also knew that.
Look how he treated Consort Shu. Prohibiting her to get pregnant having them give her a birth control in her medicine. That Consort Ling later revealed to her.
The second was he felt The Guard Ling Lunche was a better man to Ruyi than he was. He was always doing for Ruyi what Qianlong (The Emperor) should have been doing.
They used both these of the people that protected Ruyi to get at the Emperor. The Emperor whom also tried to protect her.
They removed both ppl. Including 5t Prince her Son whom protected her.
Dowager, Jai, Consort Ling and their servants were all jealous of Ruyi and wanted her out of the way at all cost.
      In the end...
As The Daughter of Zion, "Bath Kol" sent of my Royal Heavenly Father, Last and Servant to all....
I will now take my leave.

In the real story, there is no trace of empress Ula Nara. Historians believe, Qianlong destroyed all her portraits. She died from depression, bestowed of all her titles, alone in her palace, and Qianlong didn't show any empathy. Consort Ling was favored at that time.
Of course nobody knows what really angered Qianlong to do that to the empress... but every person who asked about the matter will get beaten to death by the order of the emperor.
Here, the autor tried to give Ula Nara actions some meaning, and I think it's wonderful. In this case, she is the one who destroys all her portraits.

Ruyi is elegant and refined to the end. She was true to herself from beginning to end. The royal Palace changed everyone but not her, she was exactly the same person as she was before she entered to when she died.
People call he dumb for not succumbing and flattering the Emperor, but such things are beneath her. She is a herself before she is the emperor’s subject.

She would’ve made an excellent empress. Ruyi never strays from who she is, and punishes those who harm the ones she cares about and when the man she loved became corrupt by the palace’s webs of deceit, Ruyi divorced his ass saying she never asked nor wanted to be empress. She survived her “punishments” when Ruyi was accused of the crimes she didn’t commit. That’s the true meaning of empress.

I think she displays her Buddhist beliefs most in this episode - to let it all go in order to be free of the endless suffering she endured as Empress. I think she still loved Hongli, but detested the roles they were cast in and that is why she wanted to be free. In her letter to her son, she expressed that her only wish was for him to be free to choose his own life and not succumb to "duty". Wonderful acting. I always cry my eyes out everytime I watch it.

This is my second round of watching this series. After finishing the first time; something in the next episode struck me. It's about the been 'dead' for a long time green plum planters. When the emperor dies; you can see tiny green buds on them after long years of no life. He gifted Ruyi those plants, they flourished for awhile; as their connection withered so did the plants. When both were finally dead, the plants life began a new.

The complete turnaround of Empress Dowager is so hypocritical yet understandable. It was her that set up Ruyi's aunt (the former Empress) by setting up Hongli's elder brother to look like he was trying to take over the former Emperor's seat. Then went to Ruyi and her aunt BOTH with the poison to commit suicide thinking she'd get rid of them both. But Ruyi's aunt took it, and Ruyi would have too if she hadn't went to see her aunt first. Now, Empress Dowager is this Royal figure when she plotted just like Wei Yanwan!

He took her pulse and immediately quarantined the stuff he touched her with. It is extremely contagious and can KILL anyone in vicinity, this is why the maids are DOOMED, Rong Pei probably caught it already, and why she didn't want to see anyone at the end because this shit spreads like wildfire. Someone also mentioned why she didn't have closure with her son in the end... well, its obvious that she didn't want to kill him too. End of the road, alone, and no one can follow her. Of course this is when he found out she was pregnant the first time. He let Ling get off so many times! The thing is I believe he enjoyed the fighting in the harem. He also ina way blamed Ruyi for not fighting as hard, and not going with his every command. He wanted her to close her eyes to misdeeds and be a dutiful wife, while he tarnished his own reign. He believed Ruyi would stand by his side, no matter the treatment. I'm glad at the end he learned all of that meant nothing without the one that TRULY loves you. Sorry for the rant. I've watched the series at least 3 times and episodes that I like. Ruyi is just a selfish as the Emperor. In those times, she could have been placed in the Cold Place for her actions, but yet she keeps the anger going. I get why she was hurt and upset, but her actions had consequences. After the Emperor grants the divorce for Linh Yunche and his wife, the Emperor explains to Ruyi that he is bothered by the rumors. He wanted her to basically stroke his ego say what he wanted to hear in soft words. But she argues with him and stomps off. Later on, Ling Yuenche is made into eunuch. All bc Ruyi did not stop the rumors in his head. Second example: she stopped taking her medicine and decides to die after she gets revenge on Consort Ling. She knows how fragile he is and she knows now a motherless prince is treated in the palace bc she rescued Yonghuang from being neglected. All these actions were to win fights against the Emperor.

It’s sad how the emperor sacrificed her from day one, since the very beginning of the story she was the one sent to the cold palace, she was the one being suspected always and defamed. And the one that brought all of this pain and suffering was the emperor himself with his indifference and coldness, it feels like he wanted her as you would want a watch or an accessory, but she really loved him without scheming and calculating, just wanted to be with him. In the end she realised that all the love she had for him was one sided, and there was no trust whatsoever so she just gave up and died instead of spending all her remaining life in a golden cage, beautiful but cold and hollow.

So, instead of killing her outright, the Emperor feeds her the poison mushroom soup that she gave to Ruyi’s son. It also causes severe cramping. So, she is tortured with severe cramps all day, every day, then has to be given an antidote so she can do it all over again the next day! As I recall, it slowly destroys your organs & has addictive qualities besides also being a hallucinogen! So he gives it to her for 9 years! Then, after she’s addicted to it, he feeds her arsenic! Unfortunately for the Emperor he's lost the only true love that he had. Ruyi doesn't care or want him anymore. He's done too many things to her ,that are unforgivable. The wicked, evil yanwan has finally got her just rewards. My favorite episode. The acting is superb. Some characters you can't help loving and others you can't help hating. Such a great story. I've seen it about 6 times and still love it.

I'm obsessed with this episode 😭I want to slap the hell out of Yanwan when she said she had no choice to kill all these people. It's a choice to do evil, other than murder there was plenty ways of climbing in position. And because people in the harem do it doesn't mean that it's OK if you kill too. So cunning...

I think what she means about the flower poem is that as a flower her relationship bloomed and as an empress her life and duties grew but also that flowers bloom and fall and their timing is everything. Her timing is done, she has fallen like the flower and as she knows her end is near.

How do i start? I'll start by saying all these actors/actresses have done a superb job for each character. I looked at this in its entirety and I love ep. 86 the most. During the series from when Ruyi was sent to the cold palace to now, that woman has balls of steel! But she finally had enough and refused to be an empress again all because if his bullheadedness. She made him answer for everything he did in spades, only thinking of finally having peace for herself. The emperor lived with regret, loneliness and embarrassment for the rest of his life.

I’ve been thinking I’ve probably watched this episode a million times, because it’s so satisfying to see Ling get her’s!! Anyway I couldn’t get why Ruyi would turn all of those who stood by her away and not even see her son. She’s not cruel I realized she’s protecting them she has TB and probably knows it’s contagious. That’s the only reason I think she would turn her back on those who stood by her. She was seeing Hailan up until she was diagnosed. Maybe I’m stupid but that’s my thoughts.😳🤗

It’s true that TB is contagious even in the present day. Ruyi didn’t want her sisters exposed and have them sick, that’s why she made them leave. So they’ll be safe.

And his ego still wouldn't admit the truth. Let's face it, when the first empress confessed her sins he realized that he couldn't trust his perceptions about anyone.
Someone else commented that his distrust of Ruyi started when she wouldn't say her aunt was poisoned by his mother. Ruyi tried to have it all thinking she was protecting her love by keeping the truth to herself.
He didn't trust those in the harem that truly loved him because most were selected by his mother. While several did spy for her, others loved him too much to do so. Pity he couldn't tell the difference.
