It's wonderful to see someone upgrading their hamsters enclosure! I recently built an enclosure for my hamster after doing a bunch of research, and realized store bought cages were not sufficient! Your bin cage looks really good!
This is a great start! I will say you’ll need to upgrade the wheel since it’s a Syrian hamster. They need at least 12 inch wheels for their backs! Also the small plastic tubes she can’t fit through and will probably get stuck! Try cork logs 💗
Love to see you upgrading to a suitable bin cage! It looks awesome!! I would like to mention that the red/brown log hide that looks to be an “edible” hide isn’t safe for your ham. Their made with wood shavings and honey which is harmful for hamsters to ingest! ❤
Also the critter trail tubes you left in the cage are too small for Syrian hamsters. Meaning it would be safer to leave them out of the cage+replace with something like PVC white pipes (at Home Depot or any Hardware store) I recommend 3inch for the size of tube for your hamster! They can and have been shown to get stuck in critter trail tubes + even suffocate and die 😅🫶🐹
Nice, bought my first hamster this week, I was searching for Some good size enclosure near my area, couldn't find any, so bought little cage for Lil. Buddy, he was inside that cage for 2 days, I saw lil buddy was not happy so I drove some miles and bought him 550SQ storage box, later on I will search for even larger or just buy some huge tank aquarium/ or diy enclosure made of wood. Nice to see ppl think the same and treat their pet the right way! 🤘😃
That's great! You could also try to place a cork log (it would go great with your cage aesthetics and mine loves his!) and place some sprays there! (Most hamsters go crazy for sprays haha) Placing a few more substrates (eg. Cocopeat, soft cork granules) may also help, some hammies love to dig in different substrates! Just some questions: was the thing you were scattering over the enclosure the oxbow hamster food?
@@shilohmercer8406 ohh i see. I wouldn't recommend the oxbow food though, it's first main ingredient is hay, which isn't usually consume by hamsters. It also does not contain any variety, which menas that it won't provide any enrichment! Great cage upgrade though! 🥳🤩
@@OnlyDreams807 I know! I am currently using oxbow food but 2 days ago i literally just bought some robo hamster food for my hamster! She is a robo btw)) and it isnt oxbow nor is it pellets.
ur amazing the fact u got ur hamster grape vine and a 12/10 inch wheel and a sand bath u made my day. The only thing that i would replace is the tubes and maybe put a cork log instead:) besides that 10/10 good job
@@AVAlanche... they should be about double the width though bc hamsters carry things in their cheeks. It isn't unheard of for them to get stuck in those tunnels, unfortunately
@@normal4810 that’s true. I only said that because I have tunnels like that in my hamsters cage and she doesn’t ever go in them with stuff in her cheeks. And none of my other hamsters have done that either.
@@AVAlanche... I was thinking moreso about how some people connect multiple bin cages together to offer more space, so when they go to make connecting boxes they say to make it about double-width
My hamster was smart and climbed on top of his wheel and got out his bin. I had to move his wheel from touching leaning on the wall in his bin. I moved his wheel to the middle of his bin. They can some how get on top of the wheel and climb out if it's up against the wall of the bin. My hamster had no top on his bin cage though.
Always use a lid... I have seen a hamster climb a aquarium tank's walls, especially in a corner... Keep your little Houdini safe, use a lid with steel mesh...
Awww I love the cage much better then mine I have a bin cage too and yours is much bigger and I just took off the roof so yeah I don’t have wire. And I don’t have a sand bath.
hey! where you placed those two colorful things that looked like snowflakes, the hide is made from sawdust and honey which is harmful for the hamster to consume.
hey! are you talking about that edible log hideout? because yeah I realized that after I bought it, so I removed it from her cage. wish I did more research before I got it though :(
@@eugeniabarone i’m glad you realized! but don’t shame yourself. your care is amazing and i’m glad you did your research so your hammy can live a great life. props to you for caring to take out the harmful things! 😆
It is a Sterilite 200 quart bin sold at Walmart, Target, Home Depot, and Lowes... I bought mine at Home Depot where I also bought the zip ties, roll of steel mesh, and the wire cutter... Less than $50 for the lot...
In the past I just use a heated box cutter. Dipping the blade into a pot of boiling water will get the blade hot PDQ.... When the blade cools off, dip the blade again.... Note I do not drop all of the box cutter into the pot of boiling water....
I hope it's okay to ask you some questions i also bought a bin a few days ago as I'm thinking about getting a syrian hamster 1 how do you find bin cages in general? 2 how do you keep it from escapeing?
I just got the bin at walmart but I'm sure you can find one in other stores. So that she doesn't escape I just made sure the bin was tall enough and also secured the wire mesh on top. Hope that helps!
Walmart, Target, and Home Depot stock the Sterilite 200 quart clear bin, which is slightly over 600 square inches in size suitable for hamsters. My Syrian was recently upgraded from the Sterilite 116 quart clear bin, which is near 500 square inches in size. For both bin's lids I dipped the blade of a box cutter into a pot of boiling water to heat the blade so that it would cut through the plastic lid easier for proper air ventilation. Then I zip tied the steel mesh to the lid in a dozen locations to secure the lid. You can buy a small role of steel mesh at the fencing aisle at Home Depot where I bought the giant clear bin. Viola, you created for most likely less than $50 a wonderful hamster cage bin. These two large clear bins are not much larger than a large rectangular laundry basket. Bins are the best value for hamster enclosures. Don't be cheap, your hamster will enjoy the largest bin in stock, even if it cost a bit more. I prefer the 200 quart bin, but had to settle for the 116 quart bin until the larger one was in stock at my local Home Depot...
This is so great that you are doing reaserch and upgrading! May I ask what wheel did you use since I want to get one as well but don’t know where to get it from🥲
My hamster lives incognito. I received him a month ago and made him a cage out of a 75gal fish tank. I made a second floor for him to explore and a deep litter area for him to burrow. I am a night shift worker and spend most evenings and early mornings waiting for Mr.Hams to show himself. He has been seen less than 10 times and most were very brief peeks out of his hide or as he is going from one hide to another. I've tried holding him 4 times and each have ended in my near freaking out as he escapes my grasp and ends up in hidden spots of the room... I was hoping to get an interactive homie but have a reclusive hermit... am I doing it wrong?
Hamsters are solitary animals... They will fight to the death sharing the same enclosure... Please research the pets you get... While the pet stores may have them in the same enclosure, those hamsters are very young. Around the eight week old mark they become solitary animals and start to fight...

It's so awesome to see people upgrade their cages ☺️ your little gal will love it. and you did such a clean looking job with the lid and the mesh too!
It's so nice seeing you upgrading your hamster's enclosure !
She needs to just toss that tiny toy cage into the dumpster... Keep the big bin... That tube is dangerous...

what bin did you use?
you could put the wheel in the sand bath if you want to
What about ventilation? Shouldn't there be holes at the bottom of the box? Won't there be a build-up of CO2?
The wire mesh is the ventilation
Nope, it will be fine.
