- Here's Effie acting every bit the diva on Heavy.Notice Michael Bennets genius the the set changes of this number(going from center stage.....to back stage.....to coming out of another "stage" alltogether. And the lighning fast costum changes. This was all unheard of folks at the time,Michael Bennet was truley revelutionary in his ideas.Nothing short of magic....you can tell by the audiences gasps and screams that they were blown away by the speed at which everything changed, and the sheer effortlessness in which it did.

Sheryl and Loretta both killed this
The ladies were great. But Brother's finish was prestine.
The music composition is flawless. This song is 🔥. "Watch it Effie!" Does it to me everytime.🤣🤣🤣
Loretta Devine was the BEST Lorrell
Yes, she was.
It's been over 30 years and I can STILL remember her (Ms. Devine's) performance. She was exceptional and the audience adored her. I was fortunate enough to see the Bwy version several times, she was ALWAYS in the show and was amazingly consistent.
mann in the movie this was my favorite scene and song from the movie soundtrack!! so for me to hear the song in its entirety from the stage play is just great for me lol to really the arguement and all the emotion that really came from all the drama and how it was beginning to effect the performances is just pure gold!! If only I could have seen this play in its hayday to badd im so young lol
I love this song too
What I wouldn’t give to have Jhud, Bee, and Princess Tiana go in a studio and record this in full.
I just want to take a minute to acknowledge Mr. Ben Harney, who I think has NEVER been beaten as Curtis, in both his explosive, passionate acting and his superb, clear, soulful vocals.
I sure wish I had a time machine to go back and see Dreamgirls live and in person!
They were AMAZING!!!
When Mary of the Supremes came to see this play she just Cried
Why?
Spiral Universe You never heard
@@NoirGalaxyMagixBaddie18 this scene and of the scene where effie was put out of was just like when Florence ballard was put out
Hussein Dawodu ohh
@@NoirGalaxyMagixBaddie18 She wrote a book, "Dreamgirl - My life as a Supreme" and she details what it was like watching the show on stage and how closely it mirrored behind the scenes of her life. Fascinating.
This show gives me goosbumps. Perfection on broadway.
Oh wow, this song wasn’t on the original Broadway soundtrack! Awesome to hear Jennifer Holliday’s version
The original dreams were the best, HAND DOWN.. This show gives me doodebumps.
The first LA cast from 82 was dope too. They weren't first but a phenomenal second.
I love the musical and I'm so glad you posted this so those of who didn't see the original can witness the magic!
Oh I would've loved to have seen the Jennifer, Sheryl and Loretta as the Dreams!
The men in the OBC were also exceptional and too often overlooked. Ben Harney was sexy, seductive and scary! Cleavant Derricks was hysterical and heartbreaking; and Obba Babatunde was an emotional heart for every character on stage.
@@beaellie9766 I said that. The men aren't slobs. Brotha finishes this song spectacularly. When hes says "watch it Effie." Is s great.
3 dress and wig changes in 5 seconds in the 80s??????? Unreal
Maybe I should tell you how that was done. there were several during the show ie Effie's during I am Changing. there were 3 quick change stations backstage and the girls rarely went back to their dressing rooms till intermission
Haha I’m familiar! I work in theatre myself in NYC. I was just marveling at how revolutionary this was at the time. We take quick changes like this for granted now. Hearing the audience’s genuine shock at what they saw is just priceless. It had never really been done before
When the Mylar curtain comes down they take off the over dress. The costume design is great. I did a production that rented costumes based on these.
@@andorthethis As a high school kid finding my way into musical theatre, I can vividly recall seeing this show for the first of many times. There were MANY times when I was thrilled by the staging, amazed by the wizardry, cheering/sobbing for the performances....and I can still recall how I felt during the intermission the first time I saw the show -- speechless, overwhelmed, excited, and completely in love. I have been a professional in the business as a result and keep trying to recreate that magic for others.
I have the whole musical. I love that number....when i watch Steppin to the Bad Side, with that great dancin(and singing) I feel like "....that's Broadway!" cream of the crop.
You need to go ahead and post that thang. Come on don't make us beg.
That was a change that came later. Originally Effie just didn't sing at all at that moment. She stood there and smiled or whatever.
What moment are you talking about ?
It's scenes like this that prove how close, "Dreamgirls" is to being an opera where so much of the dialogue is sang.
Loretta Devine is the best everything. :D
Yes, she is.
Still my favorite scene from the show! Thanks for posting this.
That costume change blows me away, even through the poor video quality.
I so wished this would have been faithfully added to the movie! And don't get me started on the costumes!
@summerholliday44 the most ironic thing about that is, now a days when a double album is released, it counts as two and you are more likely to get a gold or platinum album... I think one of the biggest travesties in Broadway history is not having an actual studio recording of the complete OBC. I feel with Dreamgirls, it would have been complicated to release every song on an album without recording the whole show. Just because, there are so many 'backround' songs...
You said a mouthful. People always argue that the scene WAS kept in the movie, but they changed it so much (by making it a recording session) that it doesn't resemble this at all. I worked as an usher during a run of this show, and the singing backstage fight- as well as the stunning 4-second costume change- always excited the audiences. Oh, well...
everyone should check out the RUclips video of Nell Carter singing "heavy". She was cast before Jennifer Holliday back when it was called "Project #9"
True. I think Nell Carter (the OG) had just started Gimmie a Break. I'm going to check that out.
Thank you for posting these. Its so refreshing.
@fry12341 , technically, the song is in the film, just not the sung-thru dialogue.
No, I ushered at National Theatre, when the 1987 touring company came to DC. Sharon Brown was Effie (and did very well), Deborah Burrell was Deena, and the curvaceous Arnetia Walker was Lorrell. But this original staging of "Heavy" looked so much more like what we would've seen of the Supremes on "Ed Sullivan" or "Hollywood Palace," down to those sheer evening gowns. And the quick-change when they're suddenly in San Francisco ALWAYS got roars from the audience.
I agree, this is GOLD!!!
Gosh I wish I could have seen this show live!
I want to say it was one of the changes made during the first national tour of the show. Don't quote me, though.
Damn, I wish Micheal Bennett were still alive. He would've transfered this to the big screen IN TACT. No cuts or unnessacery changes like most of what ended up in the film. What a loss!!!!!!!
Did that change come while Holliday was still playing Effie?
Even better!I saw Sharon do Effie 4 times & I must say she acted the mess out that role!!Sharon & Arnetia used to tear "Heavy" up don't you think?Sharon is my fave Effie (not counting Jen Holliday).
I need a copy
You should have your VHS transferred to DVD to preserve this awesome document.Tape oxidizes and will eventually corrode. Thanks for posting.
Yes I was just wondering about that I would LOOOVE to see Sharon in that role! Footage has got be somewhere, could someone pllllleease post it!
they made a lot of changes to the script from opening night to the road show to add to the drama, and fill out the characters motives. Effie interrupting Deena was just one of those changes...
I love this... it's such a shame they cut it outta the movie.... i blame beyounce.... i'm kidding.. but no they should not have cut it out
This song is in the film
@@mariahwhitneycelinejanetmadona they’re referring to the FULL song. Did you literally not watch this video?
@@TerrellAmari it wasn’t clear if the op was referring to the song or the scene with the song. On another note, I hope you find peace.
@KitanaiBaishunfu I don;t think anybody could really live up to holliday's sheer vocal strength :/
But Hudson did do a really good job.
No she didn't. Jennifer Hudson has always been force fed and annoying. Watching her play Effie, is like watching her trying to impersonate Jennifer Holiday as Effie.
GET IT LORETTA!
Does anyone else wish they had written in just one more fight scene to this sequence?
Ya thanx..I do have a dvd recorder now and have done just that..
Because originally she was just supposed to not sing. You might not notice it too much, but she's actually just standing there smiling. They changed it in later productions.
Effie White must be a Leo
im so upset dat dey re-did dis scene in da movie. dey should have kept it like dis. nd im also mad dey took out da song ain't no party...da song lorell sings 2 jimmie before he goes on stage 2 sing i meant u no harm.
Sharon was the bomb! I'd pay top dollar for a copy of that cast. I'd read on the official Dreamgirls site that the archived video in the Lincoln Center (NYC) is the cast from '87. You must request special permission to view and they are very precious about who they'll allow to do so.
Wow!You were an usher?!Did you see Julia McGirt play Effie? Is she as dynamic as I remember?I was on a school trip and had no idea that I was so fortunate to see her - one of the best Effies ever.
If only the movie did this
And it is a rarely known fact that Geffen was not a big fan of this number (OMG, B/C IT IS MY FAV)... And he actually financially backed the movie and there was talks of completely deleting this scene from the movie, b/c he disliked it so much...
Yeah, Its available on ebay...under dreamgirls vhs orig cast
The scene Effie is making is by not singing at all, she just stands and defiantly grins...
@gerodh I don't know the exact cast, but I know some in the know and it is the 85 cast, Deena can be anyone from Linda Leilani Brown to Deborah Burrell, I am in question as to who was doing Deena in the end, LLB did Deena from mid 84' until pretty late into the run in 85, but I am still not sure I have a recording from 85 and can;t figure it out... Terry was prolly Michelle, Ms. Loretta Devine... Lorrell... Mr. Ben Harney... Curtis and Roz Ryan as Effie... Now these are all wild guesses
@Selendomono Agreed, it makes alot more sense... In the original Boston tryout of the show, after the final warning of "Stop bringing us down", Deena and Lorrell go on to sing Heavy w/o Effie...
Edward Smith that would make so much sense, because that is what Diana and Mary did when Florence missed rehearsals and performances . They would go on as a twosome.
Does anyone have video of THAT cast? I know it was up here a couple of years ago, but only for a short while. I'd love to hear Sharon in the role!!!!!
its not hr same in the film...Effie argues more with Curtis than Deena in the film...unlike here the argument is between Effie Deena and Lorell
DO YOU HAVE THE WHOLE PERFORMANCE????
@gerodh The video is the cast from 85
beacuse David Geffen wanted the album to sell like a pop record; and thought a double album would'nt have sold as much(and with ALL the songs deleted, it would've been a double)
Is there any way I could get a copy? How much would you want for it?
woo can i borrow it
Do you have the full show? I would love to see it
Yeah I'll be putting it out on eBay in the next month
summerholliday44 have you put it on EBay?
gerodh @youndatmonkee: Do you know who featured in that archived '85 cast?
Hopefully they don't change this song in the new REVIVAL that's out now.
can somebody tell what does Deena say about at 1:39
@Marcosdastar how do they do it
what scene was made - it made no sense to have the second verse with effie just being so sweet the second time around - the change later on in the tour made more sense than this but you can't beat the orginal divas nor the magic of broadway
i have this whole DVD. someone sold it to me for only 20 bucks. i don't understand how JesusFan is selling it for 200. I would refer the man's username if I can find it (or if he's on RUclips)
@Marcosdastar I have a bootleg of the new cast, and honestly, I feel like the dancing, is too 'hip hop' and not very feminine...Shane Sparks was a poor choice to choreograph, One Night Only (Dreams version) Looks like a damn Ciara video, It's the 70's for gods sake... The blocking is all wrong and slightly amateurish. Sometimes the shift between the Dreams performance and the backstage scenes are awkward, especially during Heavy you lose some of the effect and Drama.
Edward Smith agreed. And who’s idea was it to have the dreams sing so contemporary? Syesha especially as Deena was too strong vocally for the role.
do you still have that bootleg?
I would love to see it
yeah - but it's not as pronounced as her making an outright scene - but you do have a point - usually when someone makes a scene it's outright ....
They lip synched it, so that when Effie runs off, the song keeps playing so it looks as if the were actually on a tv show and the song would keep playing...
The scene was a TV studio recording a TV special so they were singing/dancing to tape. It was all part of the story line.
what?
Who recorded this, why couldn't they keep the camera focused on the performances on the stage instead of the sign. Disappointing.
Do you have any idea how BIG cameras were in the early 1980s....and how difficult it would have been to record ANYTHING at that time?
Why do they do that? It's a show that isn't running anymore and yet they're trying to keep people from seeing it. Complete and utter bullshit!!!!!!!!!
This is some bootleg shit! This is a flawless number that has been ruined by the poor footage. I feel like Im watching a black market video. What an insult!
I’m very greatful this was even recorded but still I know they could have gotten better quality I’ve seen a 1983 bootleg of The Wiz and the quality was just amazing and it was even remastered I think someone copied this recording so much the quality went down many decades later.
