I had a Sinclair dinosaur from the 1964 New York World's Fair. You could put a coin in a machine and watch it get molded, pretty cool stuff. However, the plastic had a pretty low melting point, I left the dinosaur in the back window of my parent's car and it melted into a green puddle.
Back in the days of full service gas stations, with the service attendant washing the front windshield, and . . . Opening the engine hood to check for: -- Oil level -- Radiator coolant level With possibly checking the additional following: --- Electrolyte levels in the battery cells --- Fan belts --- Radiator hose And possibly, the service attendant would give a cursory look at the tires to see if they looked under-inflated. The financial transaction would conclude with the customer receiving 'trading stamps;' such as "Blue Chip" or "S&H Green Stamps" which were used for redemption to obtain household goods and toys.
Hehe nice to see some colored folk in this film from the 50s and not just treated as extras who had to hide from the camera, but the main entrepeneurs and customers! When I saw the black models at the sign I had a feeling this would show us the side we normally wouldn't see flimed in that era. How we blacks were doing at that time and making sure we were all okay!
Based upon the vehicles, I'd say this was filmed around 1959 or 1960. At the Dearborn station, the price of petrol was 29 cents per gallon, according to the pump. I had one of those inflatable vinyl brontosaurs. The vinyl had a powerful smell. And the seams started to leak within a couple weeks. Within less than a month, it was unusable.
Thanks for the comment! You are probably right about the timeframe! Re: Sinclair the dinosaur, I had one as a kid that my mom bought at a flea market and -- surprisingly -- it still held air. It must have been at least 20 years old! But then our cat attacked it and that was the end of Sincy, he went extinct. What a fond memory!
We have a Sinclair 🦕 gas station in the town I reside at. I remember as a child, they used to be everywhere, but they have greatly shrunk to barely even noticeable.
The DJ at that Dearborn opening was also the host of the long-running sports series "Championship Bowling." Fred Wolf was also a champion bowler himself.

Those were the days !! Imagine a free gift for 8 gallons of gas !! And not cheap junk from China !! Both of these cities have been turned into hell holes today , very sadly .
Oddly, there are countless videos on RUclips that say that building a car-centric infrastructure was a mistake and basically, they should have foreseen that 70 years later some people would want to ride their bicycle to work.
Where was the Dearborn location? Where in Dearborn? I'm guessing the south end. It actually looks like SW Detroit/Melvindale area in the background (Fort Street /Shaefer) from the oil refinery in the background. I could be wrong but where else in Dearborn would those be visible.
Not to sound woke or anything but did anyone notice that the clientele at the Dearborn station was pretty much all white while the Chicago station had a more interracial presence? Not sure how race relations were in those locations at that time but just pointing it out.
At 47th & Michigan in Chicago, a BP station is there today in 2024 and it’s not $00.29 cents a gallon either ! Can you just imagine ? 29 cents a gallon ? - It doesn’t say the year, but let’s say for arguments sake it’s 1955-1960… - $1.00 in 1955 equals about $11.50 in 2024, so $2.22 is what the pump said for 7.7 gallons, so that’s right because in 2024 that’d be $25.50, or about $3.31 per gallon today; So that’s inflation for ya’. - That’s an 1150% decrease in the value of $1.00 from 1955 to 2024. - $1.00 in 1955 has less than one-tenth of its purchasing power today ! - In other words, it takes us $11.50 in todays money to buy the same thing as $1.00 bought us in 1955 !
Sinclair has always been the best. Loved the Dearborn opening scenes. The world needs a lot more colored plastic pennants fluttering in the breeze. Much better than twerkmen.
