"It feels extremely experimental", "A bit of Magic step forward, not a leap". In other words don't worth $2,300.
I think we have to wait the 2nd, 3rd or maybe 4th generation of this kind of technologies to see great results at a better price.
Robert Campbell In 5 years this technology is going to be so huge and incredible. The rumors is that the hardware and software of Hololens 2 is going to be much better than Hololens, the FOV is going to be the same or greater than Magic Leap.
I think I'm going to wait for Hololens 2 to decide what to buy.
Magic Leap went out of their way stating that this was a consumer ready product
I was actually tinkering with its API for Unity. It seems feasible on paper, but it's far from perfect and absolutely not worth the price point for consumers. If you're a developer looking to invest in the tech, though, it might be worthwhile.
When more time is spent talking about how comfortable it is than the more important performance details...you know not to expect much. 😅😣👎
how can a company that's been going 8 years, who has over 1500 employees and has billions of dollars investment come up with some just mediocre and not ground breaking as promised for such a long time its beyond me, i think they have been living in their own bubble far to long and forgot about the real world. no wonder that bloke who left, did so when he did
David Fishlock
It's most likely a lot of government money being invested and this could be the version made specifically for public consumption.
Matt1Up so why give developers a product to make games apps etc for that will be inferior specs to what consumers will actually get doesnt make sense. Then they have to work on their developments again to give everything better quality.
Because they're building everything from scratch. Not a great idea, but they're basically building the equivalent of a tech company like apple / microsoft, with their own hardware, OS, app platform, etc, from scratch, with $2B. Even with that amount of money this is extremely non-trivial. And no, they're not govt funded; their funding mostly comes from google, saudis, and other tech investors iirc. Actually, if anything, they've *reimplemented* a lot of govt / military tech themselves (ie. military HUD displays), fwiw
Matt1Up Google is Government?
Marketing
"Magic leap wouldn't let us record what we were actually seeing through the lenses." ...why??? From a consumer standpoint, this seems like they are trying to hide something. For example, there may be a pretty horrible screen door effect that only goes away when the camera lens is slightly out of focus. Or, as you talk about in the video, the field of vision is so low that it seems next to worthless.
You wont get a screen door effect on both the Magic Leap and HoloLens because they don't use tradition pixels to make up the display. Kinda like a projector the pixels blur into one another leaving no black gap between them which you would associate with the "screen door effect". The Magic Leap does however have horrendous room tracking shown by how much the projections move around and jitter. The FOV is also pretty poor considering the level of funding and time they have had to improve it.
Although by having a video through the lenses at least gives as an idea on how solid it's spacial stacking is. Since I've seen one with Hololens and you could see that HL's tracking is perfect, no jitter even if you shake your head. That would have been great info for us developers.
terrible screen door effect in a headset with 40 degree fov? Don't be ridiculous.
Because it would look like shit?
Because they make money - not off the product - but off the hype. Just like Theranos Inc and the pen.
Hmmm, this looks like it leaps right behind Microsoft.
yeah but it has a bigger fov
Watching a guy walk around with glasses on waving his hands. Great.
How long it takes for you to get magicleap when you place the order
This will be a flop. A stunning example of how not to spend 2 billion dollars.
"A bit of a magic step forward, not a leap". Good one!
4:37 "Create App" - what more can you tell us about this? For the VR artists in the audience!
"A magic step forward, not a leap" haha brilliant! How long did it take you guys to come up with that as your video ending?
So what's the difference between AR and VR? Can you play games on an AR or not?
A quantum leap in the coming bankrupt
Mediocre comment!
the size of the box offends me
Raised all that capitol for this?
Honestly, i feel like the 3D mapping aspect is quite important. While developing apps for the Hololens I noticed that it's very very far from perfect. Curious to see how this stacks up to the new Hololens.
Magic Leap really nailed the proverb "Overpromise and underdeliver". Oh wait..
Why would I watch this video if I can't see the footage
My dad works with ctr labs wich is working with majek leap
It is an experimental device... why it has to be so expensive? What if it goes the Google-Glass way?
K J experiments need funding to move forward somehow.
Because people purchasing it aren't consumers, they're investors who want to develop for it and see the technology grow into something good.
Maybe a future update could allow me to see "them"?
2,300usd. You're welcome
Jevi Cordon ha
Not the problem. Makes sense for a Dev Kit. Problem is it's capabilities.
Neojhun yeah might as well go for Hololens
$3,000 piece of YAWN
AR not ready for another 5 years at least. Fix the FOV first (40-50 degrees isn't cutting it)
and you were kinda right.
I hope success for the people who developed it, it looks really neat & revolutionary so lets all wish them the best.
i guess we've come along way in 5 years.. wow
The ”lightfield technology displays” are just waveguides like the ones in the Hololens. The displays are not in the lenses. Also, this has nothing to do with holograms or holography, and is very much not what’s commonly referred to as a lightfield display. Come off the marketing trip, Cnet.
Should we wait for a next generation of the magic glasses? I may have expected too much for Magic Leap.
MR?
Nice video of Scott wearing some glasses. That’s about it
Basically the "Light-field" tech is a double layer waveguide with 2 focal planes not infinite focal planes.
What a shame it doesn't work with glasses. I guess I'll never be trying it.
LokiDaFerret there will be prescription lens inserts.
nicholas ellis not really the same. I'm not going to buy a second pair of lenses or pop my lenses out of my current glasses. It's simply a non-starter. :(
Now this! this is properly calling it AR
looks low res rendering
So it's basically augmented reality
Notice how the showroom has all curvy, round furniture but the demo room everything is square or rectangle and made in a retro (50's) style to hid the fact?
They obviously build the room out with shapes and colours that are optimal for the software. Possibly even pre-scanned the room and built bespoke software around it.
except that literally everyone else who has used it at home and in their offices has had nothing but good things to say. Did MAgic Leap pre-scan all their spaces too? XD
I don't understand what everyone was expecting?? This is their first gen device and devs just got the hardware. The first iPhone was an iPod and a calculator. It didn't even have an app store. Everyone seems to have wanted the beta of this device to be mind blowing...but this is an awesome v1. Can't wait for the consumer product. Also...if this is how small they got it already....expect it to be even smaller next year....and within 5 years resemble something more like Oakley sunglasses.
Asia will be knocking these out at $200, with better FOV, resolution and size by the end of the year. $2k+ is a ludicrous price.
Hololens seems to be a sextillion times better
Have other of u even tried either of them? I have the hololens, and it has many more flaws than this seems to have
Yeah as if you have a HoloLens a $4000 headset... I have seen video captures of both devices through the lenses not the built in video capture tools and the tracking on the HoloLens is leagues ahead. It's one of the point that it got praised on when it launched that the tracking was rock solid and didn't jitter like you can see with the Magic Leap
Cameron B - I’m a big boi now, I can spend my money on what I like
Cameron B hololens is $3000 or $1600 refurbished.
But you should take into consideration that Hololens paved the path for the ones like these. Hololens 2 announcement is around the corner and they're gonna address those flaws. Better FoV, more gestures, pluggable options, ...
The hardware design makes total sense. Hardware on a belt loop ready for upgrade to a BETTER processor.
I'm asking if there is software that help eye glass and hearing aids can see and lissning sound of Jesus and devils or vedio camera software can you make this product or Microsoft company ask software
back to the drawing board.
Shame it hasn't been able to keep pace with Rony's hype. I'll give it a miss and probably wait for the tech to catch up and Apple/Microsoft to deliver....Magic Leap will probably die before then...
I was there when they took over Motorola mobile place and how everything had to be a secret they hired their own security and even had a big party before opening their doors their. I always felt like it was a big scam and following the VR scene over the years I never saw production from them and I just didn't understand how they kept getting funded by such big guns
Well sounds like it might be better than hololens, but only slightly. So over the last 8 years that they have been working on this other companies basically had the same thing but just went ahead and released thiers. Probably 8 eight years ago it was very impressive, but since hololens has already developed over this time and already came out a few years ago, not so much now.
The thing is here, is that Magic Leap One was created with entirely new technology.
Let me be clear. They need a bigger pack maybe body armor like.
Doesn’t PS4 do this with the oculus?
You are very reserved in your judgment. Are u aware of not beeing invited by Leap studios anymore?
*Hololens 2 enters the chat*
The fact you can’t wear glasses is a deal breaker for me. How is the solution of prescription inserts and nose pieces a good idea? I can’t account for clients or companies who want to use this that then have to go buy prescription inserts for everyone in the company without contacts. With as much time and money went into Magic Leap that just seems ridiculous.
They are glasses... Watch it again..
or I can use MY EYES and see everything in 3D for free....
Billy Bob how dare you underestimate my eyes
fov is the elephant in the room....if they solved that..make it atleast 110..then I am definitely sold
It looks like a bug
Ghost are real
2300?
Stop right there! Don't go any further with this! Nothing good will come from it!
So it still requires a headset? I remember this had a demo years ago, and my guess is that investors have grown impatient of the progress.
Another problem is who creates the 3D contents? It still requires large amount of highly skilled artists to create contents for AR or VR to work, the tech here we see is pretty elementary, a combination of tracking and object placement.
I think this will turn out to be a huge failure and possiblly a fraud. Last I heard, it got 1.5B investment back in 2015, maybe the investor is stupid or something.
To early to get one, maybe in 5 years time. There is no shadows casting from the objects. to bad!
He's wearing it too high on the back lol
Magic leap thought they could make fetch happen. STOP TRYING TO MAKE FETCH HAPPEN!
RIP... rofl! It might be groundbreaking when they started. But since they were too slow to release it, their product lag behind other new products now. Looks like they spend all their money for marketing. Haha
$2,300
Yeah these will be flying off the shelves!!
2300 dollars to see shit in 3d yea definitly worth
Magic Leap One didn't allow you to record any footage you saw made me make up my mind - I don't want it if that's their approach to those who watch CNET content about a product which can't be revealed, they did intrigued us, they annoyed us...
But thanks guys at CNET for trying to work with what you can...
10 or 20 years from now, when AR glasses are as light and comfortable as a pair of sunglasses, with content filling the entire field of view rather than small windows, it's gonna be so cool!!! But, I know we have to start somewhere. This Hololens copycat is a nice second step.
microsoft did this a couple years ago
More eyes problem after this.
John Mohamed yup more illusions
How would this cause eye problems?
vr headset came out in 2014 and not even single person had a eye problem
They put snapchat filters and games in a goggle :)
Pokemon fans gonna be happy with this ;)
R.i.p eyes 😂
1990 : watch tvs keeping a distance
2018 : VR, Google glass, Holo lens, Magic leap etcc...
you do know they only said that because they didnt want you to block the screen right?
no one no
Because it affects god damn eye
Kaveen Alexander At least it doesn't impact grammar.
Edvards Vonsovics okay we get it. You are an american 😂
Actually doesn't bother eyes. Old wives tale
It would be the biggest scam in tech industry.
stuck in a box
The huge packaging is a it overkill and inefficient.
Not great for shipping and so on.
everything written on glassdoor was true... bad ex-employee reviews don't lie
With one leap it was... yeah... OK then...
Can't see it because it prob looks no better than what is already out. It looks like......i'll pass
How is HoloLens ahead of the game, i thought magic leap was going to be the great disruptor. HoloLens is ahead of this already, and we haven't even seen a new improved versions yet. Microsoft definitely is ahead if the AR game
They over hyped and under delivered by all accounts. The fact they won’t allow what’s in the lenses to be shown should be a red flag. I think investors are gonna pull out of this like crazy. They’ve been had.
Im still at a loss as to how they were able to raise over $2 billion dollars for this.
Why didn't they just make the lens/screen you look through bigger!? Like hello! All they had to do was make it the same round shape as that goggle lens on the front. BOOM! Immersion. Le' sigh. Guess we will have to wait for that in the second version. Only how many years of production. If it had a bigger screen there everybody would be completely on board.
scam.. in the old days we call it vaporware
for whoever buys this....good luck. This is a joke....lol
Too bulky for 2018~ worth $300-$500 not a penny more
It will never fly. It messes with people's hair way too much.
NEXXT,...pretty sad
Interesting, but... I'd punch the designers and creators in the face for such a huge f..king box to start with, then for the price tag... and walked off
I have a feeling this is over rated
Pffff...
Junk
Agree its complete garbage, overhyped, overpriced, I think we have all been conned.
buy a ps vr save your money
Sheldon Childs psvr is vr this is mixed reality
Soo all demo footage was fake. This is a joke.
Overrated and overpriced. Pass
Echoes of the 90s internet bubble. Throwing money down the drain. AR is NOT hard to explain, you're just making excuses for a bad product. Just say it - the FOV is so narrow as to be almost useless, the image is blurry, and the tracking is stuttery and terrible.
Eff magic leap.
Eh doesn’t seem ground breaking...nobody on this vid seemed blown away...most likely another failed product
Overpriced
That was a very weak review, if you can even call it a review.
Well, what should I say?
Completely underwhelmed!
Maybe you need to go back and spend 8 more years on this stuff. It looks like the gadget has a Grand Canyon to cross before it is ready for the consumer market.
Sounds like a flop.
Waste of time, efforts and money! Crap on the head with a wire dangling, and nothing impressive to see. That's why " magic cheap" didn't allow them to record what they see via the lenses, cuz they knew they would be a laughing stock!
So it`s shit then
