- At the 29th Annual Gypsy of the Year Competition, the company of Come From Away took top honors for best onstage presentation. The islanders took the audience on a self-deprecating journey through the show’s efforts to create choreography for actors not known for their dancing abilities. A final twist to the skit delivered dancing doppelgangers for the original cast members, adding splits, jumps and flips to the show’s straightforward choreography.
The indomitable and generous spirit of the theatre community - those onstage, backstage and in the audience - shined brightly as the 29th annual Gypsy of the Year competition celebrated six weeks of fundraising work of 56 Broadway, Off-Broadway and national touring companies for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Gypsy of the Year (#GypsyOfTheYear), which was held December 4 and 5, 2017, raised a record-breaking $5,609,211 for Broadway Cares.

Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS awards grants to more than 450 AIDS and family service organizations in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Washington D.C. and is the largest single financial supporter of the social service programs of The Actors Fund, helping everyone in entertainment and the performing arts.
Broadway Cares hosts two six-week-long fundraising campaigns in theatres across the country every year, one leading up to the Easter Bonnet Competition in April and the other leading up to the Red Bucket Follies in December. Broadway Cares also produces annual fundraising events in New York City, including Broadway Backwards, Broadway Bares and the Broadway Flea Market & Grand Auction.

When Joel starred with "Southwest tip of North America" I was like .... Wait. Those aren't your lines. I got thrown so badly!
Alysza Marie saaame
Same I was like north east
"Joel why are you in a chair?!"
"You said show what you know i can climb on a chair."
I laughed far too hard at that part
😂
"My acting choice is to sit during the dance"!!!! lol
It makes me laugh so much that they couldn't even coordinate getting all the chairs off and you've just got Chad running across the stage with nothing like 'oh shit'! hahah i loved this so much!!
“You wanna see how fast I can get on a chair now?”
David playing Lee and saying his acting choice was to sit during the dancing, oh my god, that was great. It's no wonder this won Best Presentation.
last time I was this early Kevins were still together
D O N ‘ T R E M I N D M E
Wow that hurts
OHHHHHHHH THAT HURT BAD
TOO. SOON.
Oof
"Are you crying?? There's no crying in choreography!!"
Giving full Abby Lee Miller
I hadn’t read the description and was floored when I thought the og cast starts doing fouettés and aerials
The original song moves me to tears regularly, but this?! Dear god, I LOVE THIS so much.
technically it also moved me to tears just...for Different reasons
3:01 THIS IS SO RELATABLE🤣🤣
“Sharon (Ella)! Go!”
“stop yelling at me!”
“Is she crying? Oh my god, she’s crying. There’s no crying in choreography!!”
Just the life of an overly sensitive high school actor. 😂 I love it though!!
I wasn't sure where this was going, but it turned out to be absolutely hilarious!!!! I'm seeing the show twice when it comes back to Toronto next year and I CAN'T FRICKEN WAIT!
I love how the 2 writers of the show are in this skit
We already LOVE this show - and this simply reinforces how delightfully creative yet unassuming their approach to bringing forward the story was.
It's funny because this won an Olivier for Choreography just last week 😂😊
Callum Wallace they must of replace the actors with the dancers lol to win best choreography
@@patriciajune5 The entire show is choreographed. The movements, the chair moves, the rotating stage....it's so tightly choreographed, it's no wonder they didn't need dancers, they needed people who knew how to hit their marks, lol
@@frederalbacon I was joking about it since this video has dancers in it as a joke
Wonderful - and it shows what a sense of self the authors and this crew has. Bravo!
HAHAHAHAHAHA 😂
This whole skit... _gold_
I've watched this like seven times and I love it.
This is hilarious, I wish I could go see these live
Also the writers 😂
I come back to this video at least once a week. Genius.
This is one of the most relatable videos! 😄😄😄
best fookin' video ever
When someone asks me to do anything that involves physical activity
AHHH Percy Jackson theatre kids unite!!!
Perfect example of less can be more! Love this so much! Want to see the show again as soon as possible! And definitely visit Newfoundland!
I put myself in a Come From Away rabbut hole, and I'm loving it!
yo, i LIIIIIIIVVEEEEEE for this sketch and the home girl in the (i think) yellow/orange/pink jacket (IM COLORBLIND STAHP), she's on the left tho, she literally is giving me all of my energy that i need to survive through the week!!! (actually her and the other one on the right side in the front!) . THHHEEEENN, my gay side flourishes through the rough when the guy at 5:22, hit's that split and then bounces with the high hat hits is my EVVVEERRYYTHIINNNGGGG. Yas gawd!
I stay singing this song all the time!! And i will not tell anyone how many times I've actually watched this video (and continue to do so) ugh....it's sahgah! haha thank you for sharing!!!
the actor in yellow or the rockette who dances for her?
It's the best show this season
Hahaha i was so confused at the beginning! this is really gold!
Good lord best video I've seen....
Wait, no that's not true because I watched a bootleg of this show
Theatre Geek do u have a link for it
This is the Easter banquet they make fun of their own shows. So it’s mean to be funny and not real. Look others up my favorite is Annie vs newsies one.
Where
There's a bootleg??? Where??????
Where is the bootleg? I need to see it.
Ok i know i say every cfa video is my fav but i think this is it
Literally my favourite video on the internet
Every time I come on RUclips I never miss it my favorite
I love this show more than ever now
Love the show, love all the cast, but it is also kinda nice to see the music given some choreography that matches the melody.
Why did I still cry at the end of this number
What a phenomenal show!
Such a delight.
That was a lot of fun.
hooooooooly shit is this on point. I was expecting cheese but this was pace perfect and simply exquisite.
in all honesty the end had me balling omfg 4:00
Can we appreciate how adorable Alex finche he is tho
Also i love how much they cant talk about how they dance
5:22 damn kevin
That was awesome!
Are David Hein and Irene Sankoff in this sketch? It looks like them. If so, that makes this funnier.
They are!
Makes it even better because it's David AS Lee saying that his acting choice is to sit during the dancing. It's just great. And I didn't even notice that Irene did the Screech dance with the company until I noticed it WAS Irene. I would love to see both of them in the musical they wrote one day, they've obviously got the chops.
This is brilliant!
*are you crying? omg you’re crying*
Ok but that is definitely how I dance lol 😂
Kevin just being unnecessarily saucy
😂This is gold
I was kind of into the parody choreo, tbh! 😂😂😂
this is so funnyyyy lmaooo
1:23 That one chair leg scares me
OMFG Im dead LMAO ... what JUST HAPPENED lmfao .......
2:35 is my confusion lmfao
So it says that the video is unavailable for me.... probably because I’m in Canada :(
Correct. Due to audio copyright, it can't be viewed in Canada. Try watching on our Facebook page!
How ironic
I'm watching in Canada??
foreverHPfanatic Same??
Lorraine Guerrero same???
is that one chair got a bent leg?
Joel 😂
Wait. I'm in Atlantic Canada and I can watch the video fine on my computer but not on my phone). What's up with that? (Also, it's a Canadian show but Canadians can't watch their performance?!)
Since the audio track is copyrighted, it can't be viewed in certain countries. Try watch on Facebook!
Can it be made available to be viewed in Canada?
Unfortunately, It can't. Try watching on Facebook!
Anyone Else notice that Geno was missing?
I thought there was no recording while practicing for a show or during show. :P lol
i was very confused when he said the southwest tip of north america
Was the 2nd group the understudies?
I believe they were actual "gypsies" who are usually very strong dancers and make a career out of learning shows fast and bouncing around in Broadway ensembles replacing other dancers on short notice (hence "gypsies" - they travel around). They probably learned this number in a day - I would assume hypothetically realizing what the choreographer would have wanted to do if Come From Away was cast with stronger dancers.
@@hanonondricek411 no I saw the cast and show before and i can tell what they look like a little
We don’t deserve to be blessed with this.
Where was Jenn Collela?
gramps2matt gypsy of the year is about celebrating the ensemble so leads usually don’t participate in sketches
Jenn Collela isn't a lead. There is no lead of come from away. Hell, Jenn Collela was nominated for the Tony for Best SUPPORTING Actress in a Musical.
Jackson DeStefano a Tony technicality. If anyone would be considered “a lead” in the show, it would be her. She’s the only one with a song all to the self. She wasn’t eligible for the gypsy robe.
Jackson DeStefano technically, "Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical". The "Featured" must be the operative word.
Performing in Gypsy of the Year is completely voluntary. Ms. Colella may have not been able to attend for a variety of personal or professional obligations. However, she was a big supporter of Gypsy of the Year audience appeals, often delivering the post-show speech at the Schoenfeld.
I am sorry, but I do not get the "fake a turn" segment
Laughing! But choreography doesn't just mean music, it may be simultaneous movements.
yes, but remember. these ppl cant even sit down together lol. :)
This show dosnt need choreography, the precision is enough . But the sad thing is that in someone's vision the dancing is included and it won't be as moving.
