Potash alum can be prepared through a process of double decomposition reaction, by mixing a solution of potassium sulfate K2SO4 and aluminum sulfate Al2(SO4)3. The reaction takes place as follows:
K2SO4 + Al2(SO4)3 - KAl(SO4)2·12H2O
Steps for preparing Potash Alum:
Dissolve aluminum sulfate in water to create an aluminum sulfate solution.
Dissolve potassium sulfate in water to create a potassium sulfate solution.
Slowly add the potassium sulfate solution to the aluminum sulfate solution while stirring.
The reaction will cause the precipitation of potash alum crystals, which will settle at the bottom of the container.
Filter the solution to separate the potash alum crystals from the liquid.
Wash the crystals with water to remove any impurities.
Allow the crystals to air-dry or dry them in an oven at a low temperature.
Store the potash alum in a dry, airtight container.
Note: The final yield of the potash alum depends on several factors, including the purity of the starting materials, the reaction conditions, and the method of purification.
Uses of Potash Alum:
Water purification: Potash alum is used as a flocculant in the treatment of drinking water and wastewater. It causes impurities in the water to clump together, making it easier to remove them.
Food industry: Potash alum is used as a firming agent in pickling and canning, and as a leavening agent in baking.
Pharmaceuticals: Potash alum is used as an astringent in the treatment of diarrhea, mouth sores, and minor skin irritations.
Firefighting: Potash alum is used in some firefighting foams to control the spread of fuel fires.
Properties of Potash Alum:
Chemical composition: Potash alum is a double salt composed of potassium sulfate and aluminum sulfate.
Solubility: Potash alum is soluble in water and insoluble in alcohol.
Physical properties: Potash alum is a white crystalline solid with a salty, astringent taste.
pH: Potash alum has a neutral pH value of 7.
Hygroscopic: Potash alum is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air.

It's just alum and professional trained chemistry individuals have access to theose reagents. Just do not try this at home or anywhere else. When other chemistry expert is present in the lab during your practical you can do that experiment under his guidance.

How many hours it took to form the crystals?
There will be small crystals within 30 mins and after that as long as you wait, you will be getting larger crystals. It took me nearly 6hours to get this size.
