  • In this video we take a look at the SK X-Frame Ratcheting Wrench Set. We cover why we bought the wrenches, what we paid, some of the design highlights, and offer up a comparison to standard Craftsman wrenches and our relatively new Capri Ratcheting Wrenches.
    These are honestly some of the nicest tools I have ever bought. The initial impressions are off the charts. Time will tell how they hold up, but these are really, really nice.
    My biggest knock on these, after very limited use, is that there aren't smaller and bigger sizes available. If I were able to get 7/8" and 15/16" wrenches I'd order in a set for work. I've watched these for a LONG time and waited for the price to come down. At the usual $275 for the set it is a little out of my price range. Paying $140, roughly $20 per ratcheting wrench, seems fair. The slightly higher price over some bargain entry point wrenches makes it a no brainer once you've had these in-hand.
    Let me know your thoughts on these wrenches. Have you used them? If so, how long? Any issues? How to they compare to other ratcheting wrenches you have used over the years.
    I'm also aware SK claims these are available in other sizes, but I have yet to actually find them. Hopefully it is something they add in the future.

    The sound of those is awesome. If you want a nice set of regular wrench’s buy one Wright grip. I bought the satin finish like the old craftsman’s. Best wrench’s I’ve ever owned hands down. The open and box end are phenomenal no worries at all using them. Great vid 👍🏼👍🏼

      Thanks...I've been interested in the Wright Grips. I had a vendor at work price them out last fall. We have some really old stuff from Wright, still kicking and performing well!

    My knipex tools came wrapped in bubble wrap and tape with no other packaging. Don't judge a tool by its packaging.

    • @lonestarmopars
      @lonestarmopars  5 лет назад +2

      That is true...I believe a lot of that is bulk packaging when it ships to retailers with display stands, or back stock. I've gotten a lot of Knipex and Stahlwille in branded plastic bags. My singular Channellock tools also have nothing fancy. For the most part though, with a few exceptions, tools and parts quality can often be tipped off by packaging.

    I don’t know why they didn’t make the smaller 2 sizes I think the size of the pawls and mechanism might be too small to make and handle and may have degraded enough causing reliability issues. Just my thoughts I do have both sets

    • @lonestarmopars
      @lonestarmopars  5 лет назад

      That is very much a possibility for the smaller sizes. I love these so far, would not hesitate to go up to 15/16" (use it a ton) if they offered more sizes. I'd like to add the metric set, but I'm waiting for the price to come down. I've also been tempted to grab the Capri set, or try out someone else's offering...Capri for the known quality and value, brand x for curiosity. If money wasn't an issue I'd already have the SK set! Hope they continue to serve you well!

    Tekton or Kobalt over Husky, corporations generally outsource to China for only one reason and it's not for quality.
    -
    Husky is from China while Tekton and Kobalt are from Taiwan, Craftsman's basic stuff is from China but their better stuff like the Gunmetal 120 ratchets are from Taiwan. I think you'd like Craftsman's Gunmetal ratchets, their fine tooth mechanisms work very well when oiled though back-drag is a bit stiff. Check out Kobalt's mini-head 72 tooth line up, not as fine tooth but the back-drag is minimal and better than Craftsman's basic China made line-up.

    Am I alone in being bothered by the amount of forging flash not cleaned up in the “X-Frame” cutouts? That’s a detail that I would expect to be cleaned up on a Made in the USA tool. Maybe the camera is making it look worse than it is, but it really catches my eye.

      @lonestarmopars  5 лет назад +1

      They don't replace discontinued items? I've never tried it, but generally the practice most companies have when something is discontinued and not available is that they offer up the latest offering. These are a pretty big investment to get shafted on...hopefully they keep proucing them for many years. Really solid design.

    I hear you on the size limitations. The ratcheting mechanism is really strong though and Realtoolreviews actually sheers off a grade 8 bolt using box end of the 9/16. The open end grips really well too!

      @@lonestarmopars I aggree, it would be great to see size range at least match the standard 6-24mm and 1/4 -1 1/4. However, i can see why they may not make some of the smaller sizes due to the ratcheting mechanism being so bulky.

    17:30... SK has what they call their Sure Grip Technology in the open end of the ratchet.... you'll notice small rises on the face of the tool... for biting
    (without marring) and holding the fastener so that it doesn't round out the fastener..... These are really nice wrenches. ... The Capri you bought are nice also though.....👍

    • @lonestarmopars
      @lonestarmopars  5 лет назад +3

      I realized I forgot to cover that when it was uploading, lol. If you go to the SK website you can read people talking about how good they grip on the open end. I'm very impressed by these wrenches. The Capris, while they haven't seen long term use yet, are really nice and have held up thus far. For the money and the size of the set, you can't go wrong with their offering. It is nice to go from ZERO ratcheting wrenches to 2 solid sets! Since they were brought in at roughly the same time, I will alternate usage and see which one performs best over time!

    Gorgeous. Only for high quality American made product would I consider paying this much for a set of wrenches but I am. It’s evident that there’s a lot of care put into these. At some point, I’ll have to pull the trigger and get them. Probably the metric set. If I do though, they’ll be generational heirlooms after I’m done with them. 👍🏻🇺🇸

    If you bought the metric set too- 8mm is only 0.78% larger than 5/16", so it should work for those in most cases. I too want a 13/16" and a 7/8", and a 20 and 21 mm added. 7/8" doubles as a 22mm, so a lot of value would be added by just those 4. Toss in a 1" and we now have a 25mm to boot.

    Just picked this deal up. 👍 I’m hoping also they expand the line but with short wrenches particularly on the smaller sizes. I’m hoping these stand up similar to the USA-made Craftsman wrenches I beat up and toss into my toolbox without complaint. I read several SK Tool complaints on the non-ratcheting line that the smaller jaw broke off under load. Hopefully that was a manufacturing issue that has been resolved. Otherwise, thanks for the tip and looking forward to putting them to work.

    • @lonestarmopars
      @lonestarmopars  5 лет назад +1

      Nice...at $140 it is a really solid deal. I saw a few complaints, but they all seemed to be handled with free replacement. The line has been out a few years (hard to believe), but if any issues remain, they seem to honor the replacements. If it ever gets above freezing in the shop I've got some coolant system stuff to break them in with! Hopefully they serve us both well!

      My set came in today. Solid build. My only comment is that I am used to wrenches with a slight offset and as these are long wrenches with no offset there will be times where these won’t work. Nice set though. And the tray height fits in my toolbox amazingly.

      Nelson Flores I haven’t but I use these as a lower torque tool. I still rely on my USA made Craftsman wrenches for the heavy lifting. I will say that they scratch more easily than the Craftsman I have which I just toss in the drawer. I try to buy used vintage tools unless it is a unique design or function.

      @@lonestarmopars your welcome, I totally agree..
      Id rather have these wrench's than Snap-On or my fave.. "Cornwell", these seam to have a long life quality vs most made today an they go the extra mile to change the style but keeping the streanth an thin body, youd think most would do just the oppisit an make them thicker than they are, that alone impressed me, also having them extra paws is very impressive !
      As soon as I can, Ill buy both sets (SAE/Metric).

    The normal price for the 7peice sae is $130-$140. The price for the metric 12 piece set is $232.54.
    $232/12=$19.33 the average price per wrench.
    Take $19.33 and multiply it by 7, that's $135.31 for the SAE set.
    Current list price for the SAE set is 137.95. Always double check Amazons fluctuating prices.

    The got the gear wrench x-beam design. It's supposed to be more comfortable. I had to choose between those and sk. The only reason I didn't get the sk is because they don't have the 15 degree bend on the ratcheting part, or a way to switch direction without having to take it off and flip it over. I would be interested in a long time use on the sk's to see if the flat design is an issue or not. I'm thinking I will get sk as my second set.

      I was unaware Gear Wrench had an x-beam design. The offset and ability to reverse while in place are nice features. @@lonestarmopars The x-beam design on the gearwrench set is for comfort and has won a award for helping people with arthritis, or to prevent it. The x-frame design on the sk's are to give it more strength. They sounds similar, so I just wanted to explain the differences. I got a little confused about it when I first heard of both of them.
