Every time someone does a base game build, they always do a starter home. It'd be nice if you let yourself loose and make a base game house where you're not limited by budget. As someone who recently started playing the Sims, I'd like to see some base game builds that inspire me, specially for interiors.
THIS! I'm a fairly new player, so while I have bought a few of the expansion and game packs, I have nowhere near the entire collection. What's been frustrating for me is looking through the Gallery in search of downloadable houses that use only the base game and the very few packs that I own, but it seems that almost invariably the houses I like well enough to take a closer look at use items from a lot of different packs. I've had a tiny bit of luck finding a few homes that focus on using only the Base Game + one other pack that I happen to own, but otherwise it's like "This house can be yours as long as you own this muckin' huge collection of added packs." I guess the upside is that I'm finally learning some building skills out of sheer desperation to have nice homes made using only the packs I already own, and I selected those particular packs carefully in large part *because* of the Build/Buy items I knew they contained. But the people who create nice Base Game or Base Game +1 homes hold a special place in my heart just for being more considerate to us newer players without tons of disposable income for expansion packs.
@@EvieDelacourt I'm excited seeing new people come into the sims, and I can understand the struggle of trying to find nice houses with the packs (or lack there of) you have. It's honestly really discouraging seeing all of those greyed out circles in the gallery lol. I applaud your growing building skills though, I've been playing TS4 since release and I'm only just now decent at building T-T edit:typo
Do you mean the shell the same and budget versus whatever he wants or same shell and same ‘style’ just budget vs luxury items different? Either would be fun to watch!
I like the idea of a legacy-ish challenge where you start out with base game and each generation you roll a dice and get a random expansion, game pack, stuff pack, and kit to play with. It would obviously be based on whatever the player already owns and not that they have to buy a new pack that they can't afford or don't want unless they want an excuse to buy a new pack.
I thought from the title and thumbnail that this would be a house only using debug items, but I'm always happy to see a base game only build! I only have a few packs, so I appreciate the inspiration for future builds
for fun a small stereo or linzee is the most under used item. Your sims can use it to dance, relax, ask jokes, or even use for exercise. much better than a tv and can raise a skill or too. Other thoughts you don't really need a desk in the bedroom, child sims can do their homework either on the floor or at the dining table. instead a skill item may be a better choice. Just some thoughts
If you keep it on the same lot, you don't need to worry about fun, because there's a fishing spot out back, and we all know that fishing is fun. Probably.
I do always enjoy the chaotic form-over-function way James tends to do houses _(especially_ in rags to riches episodes). Who needs a comfy bed when you have beautiful floors?!
9:02 Little tips like this are so helpful. While it seems an obvious solution, it’s easy to get so focused on other factors that the obvious isn’t so much so. My builds are still fairly basic and I prefer to download others, but thanks to years of watching James my son no longer watches over my shoulder, cringing, and saying “Mom. Seriously. Stop.” 😂
something that I find amazing is that every simmer I follow said at least one time "oh I learned how to build watching James Turner" and when I started watching him I got it.
hey james! there's this bloke on youtube called Dear Modern who has been quite popular lately with his use of Feng shui to make homes flow nicer and i was wondering if it might interest you to do a build using feng shui techniques! just a suggestion, love this vid btw! 😊😊
Interesting to see how different architecture is depending on where you live. Where I live, in the Rocky Mountains, we don't have modern homes. I've never seen a modern home like this, so I love getting different perspectives on what's popular in different countries.
I was just thinking this also. I'm in Alabama, and even here in a city (Greater Birmingham Area) that has a lot of different housing styles, ranging from a few remaining Victorian homes and commercial buildings to some very modern architecture, I don't recall ever seeing this particular style of home before. I love how even just within the US, preferred house styles can vary widely from region to region, based on available building materials, population density, and other factors.
Imagine all the cultural differences in European countries lol. Of course Asian and African architecture are very unique too, but in Europe it's so funny that we have so many very small countries squished into one place and all of them look so different. I'd just need to take a train or drive a car for around 7 hours and then I'd get to the border of my country. And once I get into a foreign city it's like visiting a new world because architecture is veeeery different everywhere.
This reminds me of an Eichler or Rummer home. They are known for having loads of windows for natural light and a center courtyard/roofed atrium. I’d love to see you re create one. They’re my favorite to build in the Sims.
Can you please recreate this house but using every pack? I love idea of the house but it used only base game and on a budget. 😢 it has potential to be amazing!! 🤩
@@miunya I know the point of this video! It’s good for everyone can download and play it, but I love structure of this house and want to see another version of it without any conditions.
Video idea: show the evolution of a house recreated with different budgets. It would be nice to be able to download an improved version as my Sims bank account grows.
When making a budget build I find it easier to make the family first and move them to an empty lot then build so u have the exact budget and can work down to zero. Or else i always go over budget 😆
I like this! The style and flow is nice and I think if moved to a bigger lot and the family had more money you could easily add like a pool out back off the deck. Throw in a couple pool lounge chairs by the pool (the long ones you lie out on by the pool) and of course the grill and outdoor table on the deck! You may even be able to squeeze in a small seating area with a fire pit though I think that would require some packs so maybe not? Or maybe an outdoor kitchen to go with the grill! A couple counters and a sink. For the looks if you ignore how the Sims will go outside to wash their hands in that sink after using the toilet 😂
I don't understand the trend of no eaves in modern builds in the real world, though that may be specific to a more warm and dry climate. eaves serve a purpose for those who live in areas with lots of rain and snow :)
@@iamsongforsomeone994 Only if I had help. I could do the video editing and voice over, but writing a good script and preparing the B-roll is more work than I have time for.
Base game build and buy is one of the reasons I gave up on sims4. The gameplay seemed to be so much more lifeless too. I don't know if I got too 'old' to enjoy the sims.
it's so real tho: construction company said they will give you some "free furniture" when you purchase the house, yes the build is awesome and high quality (expensive flooring, door etc) BUT furniture very basic hahahah Good job James! I always fascinated by how James building the shell and floorplan
It’s fascinating to see the Australian house trends. Here in Denmark it’s often a sort of dark grey brick and black tiled and gabled roof. A bit better suited to a very wet and windy climate. A White House would have a green trimming along the bottom metre within half a year
Gee, I wonder if the fact that James is seeing a lot of houses painted completely white could have anything to do withe fact that *he lives in Australia*? (Heat reflective paint. It's a thing. Look it up.) I mean you can see the entire shape of the house is designed to minimise direct sunlight hitting big windows and create shadowy areas that are good in a very hot country... (which works fine. It's a world that might see some pretty high temperatures.) Then again, I can talk can't I? I live in the UK. If I went and bought a brand new built house tomorrow I know exactly what it would look like. More or less exactly the same as those build in the sixties, seventies, eighties, nineties, naughties, twenty-tens...
Going along the lines of "free" houses, I think it would be cool to set up a house using eco lifestyle and whatnot that has the smallest amount of bills possible.
Maybe you can renovate it in a later video. To show how you’d actually design it. Would be cool if you do one without a budget in base game & do one with all the packs.
3 bed 2 bathroom is a medium sized house here. We currently rent a 2 bed 1 bathroom which is what I'd class a large starter home as (technically a studio apartment or 1 bed would make even more sense) and most 3 beds here only have 1 bathroom too. Only tend to get more than one bathroom once you get to 4 beds+ here.
Suggestion: Build one starter home in each of the sims games (doesn't have to be the same one), TS1, TS2, TS3, and TS4, and see which one is easier to do a starter home in, which one is harder, which one has better starter build/buy (nicer cheap things), etc. It would be interesting to see if you end up using more IKEA in TS2 home, because there's some really good cheap stuff with that pack.
I've only noticed it like one minute before the video ended, but the embroidery on James's hoodie is neat 👌Very cute, nicely done and the placement is really delicate. Whoever designed this thing did an amazing job. James: I'm going to try to keep the price low so it could be a starter home
*1 minute later*: uses $12 wood flooring
He also used the $8 white wallpaper I think, there's a cheaper $4 version 😭
Don’t forget the $300 doors
@@JamesTurnerYT In real life I'd prioritize the structural elements too as furniture is easily changeable
@@JamesTurnerYT Yeah, I just kept yelling at my computer, "just change the doors!" lol

or the $400 painting over the bed!
Or change the $12 wood floors or the $8 white walls too…
You may take my chairs, but you will never take my doors!

SO MUCH POTENTIAL!!
Same
It was so painful watching James prioritize those doors over furniture 😂 I do like the shell and layout, though
And the curtains, they would have been the first thing I ditched
And some of the windows haha.
The painting in the master bedroom!!!
The basegame doors are all so ugly that I completely agree with the use of the 300 dollar doors in a starter home 😂
I get it, but in real life furniture is easier to upgrade than fixtures like doors
Watching James make a starter house is like watching a chef be told to make a gourmet meal with $10.
that sounds like the challenges they do on sorted food
that's such a good comparison, love it!

I have a couple that is currently in Uni... amd I think this might be a good little starter home for them! They have some cash built up from founding a painting group and contributing knowledge. 😂😂
"If I'm going contemporary... you know I'm just gonna do white walls." 😂😂😂 Always James... Always!
Gallery Living built a lot of houses that look like this. Fave thing about them is their house designs are named after artists. This could be a Mondrian lol
