a thing ive only just noticed about the thumbnails in this OST playlist. the first ones show them being together, the second ones show them being close together, and here it shows them being together, but having to walk away from one another. its exactly how it worked in the show.
...Happiness that she's free of her need for vengeance and sadness at how stupid she was knowing that she'd *stilk* kill the man she loves for it. I can't call that anything other than self defeating and pointless. If anything... this piece is just plain tragic.
Only tangentially related, but if anyone would like a reason to be sad about another character whose potential was ruined by their trauma: Yasuri Nanami DID have the capacity to be creative, thoughtful and expressive. When she buries the three Maniwa who tried to capture her she's asked to bury them with Chouchou's cigarettes. She assumes them to be incense, placing and lighting three at the gravesite and offering a prayer, effectively transforming the cigarettes in a creative act that pays tribute to the three. She was likely only able to do so, at that point, due to her ignorance: she had never seen a person smoking before. This one act demonstrates that she had the capacity to live, as an artist or a priest, but that she needed to be taught the act of wilfully imposing or dismissing common practice to induce this kind of creative shift. In other words, she was utterly failed by her upbringing, where she was taught to see herself only as an impersonal (and failed) tool. Her talents are just as squandered as Togame's.
....The realization that she'd *still* kill the man she loves for her revenge.... You really can't call that that anything other than self defeating and stupid. But then, the show does a *dsmn good job* at throwing it in our faces that.... try as you might, not a goddamn thing you did changed anything. Not the grand plans, not the revenge, not even your wish to stay dead. All you get are dead bodies and a world that keeps on like nothing happened.
Togame probably would not have killed shichica after falling in love with him. Imo she wanted to come clean before her death and she told him that she would have killed him in an attempt to have him live on without her and not feel like shit losing the love of his life.
I know this comment is old, but didn't you realize that when she said all those things, her "scheming" eye was visible? She lied to Shichika to try to convince him to forget her and live freely, but of course, that didn't work either.

この人の描く物語セリフ長たらしいの嫌だったけど刀語は好き。
とがめのどうしようもない感情を自分で受け止めきれず、不器用ながらに伝えたのはまさしくとがめらしい最期で本当切なかった。

二人には最後の最後まで好き合ってほしかった！幸せに笑ってほしいとおもった！とがめは人として出来すぎていて、七花は刀として出来すぎていた。けど、だからこそ笑って終わりとしてほしかった。あの物語ではそうでも、違う物語ではあの二人が笑い合って幸せな終わり方をしているのを是非願いたいですな。俺はとがめが好きだぁ！
