Nah, it's not gonna do much. For one thing, this isn't the first time it happened so no it's not a new meta. Developers releasing a game that's free on release or content that's free on release, but costs something when purchased later is not a new concept at all and has been done before. Not to mention the fact that there's no shortage of lengthy demos that allow you to transfer your safe file to the full game should you want to proceed past those first few hours. And there's also no shortage of mobile-phone-like games that give you the full game for free with ads, but require a purchase to play without ads. Not quite the same, but it's a very similar concept (that has proven to work since even if you don't buy it, your personal data still results in profit).
And 2nd... if a lot of indie devs try this, most are going to fail. Most will just drown in the multitude of other free-on-release indie games. With smart marketing or through sheer luck some of them will attain success this way, but that probably accounts for less than 1% of all the games trying this 'new meta' if it catches on.

"Product received for free" reviews don't count to the "Score". As you can see 9,923 reviews versus "Very Positive (82)"

This is like those programs that have a free trial, after which you need to pay.

It's not an unknown developer. It had to have a first push. I don't think that it'll work for every indie dev.

Yeah won’t work for everyone, but devs that know they have a lot of momentum going into their release may consider this way of release seeing Content Warning as an example. Will likely only work on games that have a core focus on online multiplayer
