My favorite guard, been using it since white belt, I'm purple belt now (135lb) and recently won an absolute bracket using octopus.. on top of countless white/blue tournaments using it

It’s funny I wasn’t taught it I just randomly found myself in the position and have used an ugly variation of this ever since. But now I realize how many mistakes I’ve been making haha

The detail I have been missing with this position is bumping the person into the dead zone 10-11 o clock. Thank you for this.

I needed this! I get stuck here often when they pass my knee shield

I don’t understand why you would stop what he called an octopus half guard and not just do a hip bump in one motion, seems like your just giving your opponent a chance to hip switch and crush you to the ground,

It all depends on his weight distribution and where his weight goes. Sometimes you can immediately go for the sweep. Sometimes you have to wait and sometimes you have to switch to a complete other technique. You can't always use the hip bump.

The hip bump is only available if he person on top doesn't push back, if he does you'll be able to go for his back. Anyway, there are lots of options from half octopus. It's a great position that can bail you out of tough spots.
