You know you're a hardcore hiker when you're waving around a beat up piece of foam and say "it's the most luxurious thing you can do" lol. Thanks for the video.
One thing I noticed from your pre hike video to your post hike video was your amount of energy. You seemed much more reserved in the other video and in this one you're a fun loving wild man! Haha loved this video, probably one of my favorites. Thanks for the video.
Loved this video especially since you got to the point quickly. Some of the gear videos make me want to stab myself in the eye with a spork, or I just fall asleep. Not planning a through hike, but working on longer hikes, so this is a big help.
dude, love your vid and your gear. totally get your mindset on a lot of your choices. we actually have a lot of the same stuff. love that prolite plus too. keep putting up vids man.
I thoroughly enjoyed your recommendation about the butt pad and that I'm not alone on their awesomeness ! i got a lot of flack from my friends purchasing the thermarest zlite seat a few years back, but I can say that it's now attached to my pack on every fishing trip, day hike and camping trip!
i found out that if you wash EVERYTHING you have cloth material wise in PERMETHRIN that it not only keeps the bugs off but the mice tend to stay away as well... specially if there are other options for the mice to go after like other peoples stuff not washed in permethrin lol... not that we would wish that on anyone of course...
Nice video! I wish my tent set up was that fast! Was there anything that you found you DIDN'T need/use on the trail that you brought? Anything you wish you had brought or picked up?
Cole, what is that blue round AT logo tag on your pack, and where/how do you get one? I've also seen yellow ones. Just curious. Great video; informative and fun! Thank you, "Steamer"
ColeB I gave you an apple crisp backpackers pantry meal. I also think you reunited with some friends you hadn't seen in a while. There was a mother there as well hammock camping and section hiking with her high school aged daughter.
ColeB I gave you an apple crisp backpackers pantry meal. I also think you reunited with some friends you hadn't seen in a while. There was a mother there as well hammock camping and section hiking with her high school aged daughter. The shelter had an amazing view from the picnic table and there was a ridge runner.
OH MY GOD I REMEMBER! YES yes yes! I remember exactly that moment. Thank you so much for that meal. That was a wonderful night for me. Your son was adorable! Awesome to meet such kind people like yourself out on the trail! THANKS for commenting and reminding me. :D
ColeB You are quite welcome! We had a blast and my son was so excited to meet so many nice thru hikers. He was talking about it the whole way down! Best of luck with your sailing endeavor. I've slept on a boat of a similar size and helped a bit with the maintenance. That's one heck of a project!
Congrats! I thru-hiking next year and ended rethinking my gear. The majority of my gear is from Zpacks. Without Zpacks and really counting the ounces I wouldn't be able to get my base weight down. I'm ready to go. My base is sub 9 and worn is sub 5.
I liked your intro. I am interested in trying an ultralight hike. I may be going thru-hiking with my sister in 2018, but doing training hike in 2017 in MD.
You know what you are talking about. I am glad that you showed us, though I wish for discussion of clothes and footwear as well. Question: was the silnylon tarptent floor slippery for your mattress? Was there any issues with the Notch?
lamyeechiu footwear is completely and utterly up to the foot of the wearer. So it's so hard to talk about footwear brands and such. If I was on a bad incline I slipped slightly with my pad but not enough to bother me. The Notch was great! My only two cons are these : 1. It's small, some days I wished it were bigger but ultimately I was content with the size. 2. You would get some splashback from rain around your head and feet. This wasn't a big deal and I stayed dry in some serious storms. Just you get sprinkled a little from the splashes.
Hey really good advise always love to hear reviews after a hike, some of the best info from what you learned on the trail. Just got back from 8 days on the AT in VT, went for the fall foliage, great week. I do disagree on what you said about the sleeping pad. I upgraded from the pad you have (had for almost 20 years) to a neo air therm, it is the best pad I ever owned. Is it noisy, year a little, slept in a shelter with two others that also had noisy pads. But, the real noise in a shelter is people coming and going at different hours, and "snoring" My pad was no match for the other noise so really a non issue. And, that is also why I always have ear plugs to use if needed.
Yea Im not saying NOT to get the Neo Air. For most people its not a problem. But I toss and turn a lot even before I fall asleep and I promise you those Neo Airs make a ton of noise if you toss and turn on them. Luckily over time they do seem to wear out and not crinkle as much. (I'm basing my research from constantly hiking with people with these and constantly hearing it.)
Morley. Mr Chris and the boys told us about you. Outstanding Accomplishment my man. We knocked out 1000 miles this summer. Our gear is almost identical. You nailed it👍👍 Wish we would have connected on the trail. Will meet up next time we come to Lafayette.
Mowgli is the correct spelling :) Thanks so much and thats so awesome for you guys! I just checked out your videos! Will you attempt to finish the other 1000 miles another time? Either way great on you guys.
Hey, ColeB! Thank you for this! I loved it! And, as we are planning on a SOBO leaving Katahdin on June 2nd, 2017, we really want to know about how you coped with rain.... especially on top of the Whites! Thank you! Shaved Bear and Reassurance
Hey good luck with your planning and prep! Although I cannot give you advice on dealing with rain in the Whites because I had perfect weather through the Whites. I can say that rain and learning to deal with it is very much something that comes when youre forced to deal with it and hard to ever prepare for. I can assure you that if you have a decent rain jacket or parka, you will be golden.
How did you secure you zpacks chest pack so that it didn't flap, bounce, etc. And do you have any improvements you'd made in the chest pack if you were recommending a version 2.0? BTW - thanks for the awesome post trail gear report.
great stuff, I was Florida Girl - I did trail days then hiked a VA section. I was only out for 3 weeks but its all i want to do again :-) see you on the trail
FL girl adventures, I live in FL and have started trail riding on my bike but would like to do just hiking too . if you're in central FL and are looking for someone cool to do stuff with let me know, I'm just your typical nature loving regular white guy lol
Yes it got below freezing and I had tights and a Patagonia Nano Puff at all times. I did it in once single hike but had a trip to Hong Kong randomly near the beginning. I would go with a quilt next.

hei Cole, take a look at the Sea to Summit sleeping pads, Ultra Light Insulated. It's 3 oz heavier than Xlite ( for the 72"), but it inflates and deflated a lot faster (12 blows to inflate and 2 seconds to deflate) due to a nicer dual valve, its quite and more comfortable (my opinion). I have both and I like the S2S more.
Nice gear video, Mowgli! I second Black Diamond trekking poles, Tarptent shelter, and pocket rocket/titanium pot cooking system. Bummer the TSA confiscated your stove in Bangor!
Congrats on completing the AT Thru Hike! Very good lightweight setup. I watched Red Beard when he did his AT Thru Hike and PCT with Z Packs gear. Any future hikes planned or are you just going to relax and take in all of what you accomplished.
Right now my future will consist of sailing as far as I can see but I would be lying if I didn't have the PCT on my radar. Im confident whatever I am doing next will be an adventure and not so much relaxing. :)
This is a great video, Cole! As a photographer myself, it's been hard to figure out how to take images on the trail without sacrificing quality and manual modes. My Canon 7D/gear of course it's out of the question, so I might look into the Fuji or upgrade my iPhone right before the trail.
Hi, do you think the front pack counts towards the overall max weight of your pack or is it separate? I'm unclear as to the overall mechanics of that. BTW that tent really sets up fast lol
HEY! So yes, technically it does count. IMO its cheating though because it distributes the weight in a way that feels better. Less weight on your back=lighter feel. But yes it counts for the overall.
Its a thought but probably not in '17. I bought a sailboat and am working on the sailboat and hopefully will travel the Caribbean next year in it. Ive got a video series on that experience so far.
lol. This vid was great. i gotta subscribe to this guy. Good advice that i will take to on my thru hike in next year or two. I've always wondered if anyone really only brings one set of clothes. So i appreciate the honesty. If im hiking 2200 miles i dont give a $@#% if im dirty. Good stuff!
Hey man I used a Patagonia Torrentshell. It was heavy and I barely used it because it would make me sweat. In hindsight I should've gotten either a higher quality, lighter and more packable rain jacket or a parka.
Did you feel cramped in the Notch tent? I've been wanting to get one for my AT hike but it looks pretty small and I don't want to invest in something that will make me feel claustrophobic enough to buy a second 2 person tent.
It felt cozy. There were times where I wished I had a bigger tent. BUT more times than not I was fine with it. I personally realized Id rather have the weight savings than the space. Plus the notch has decent canopy space to put your gear on either side. The design in my opinion is perfect for the minimalistic hiker. Up to you though! IM 6ft by the way. If I was any taller it would've been too small.
Nice Video! Question: How did those Solomon Speedcross shoes do on the trail? How many pairs did you go thru and did you wear insoles? P.S. keeping your spoon and trowel together in the same pocket is gross!!
K H they did fine until my feet outgrew them from the stretching. I ended up switching to Salewa trail runners and really enjoying them. I went through 4 pairs of shoes total. Also it's not gross if you actually think about it. The trowel only ever touches dirt.
Late to the party but congrats. Just came across your video and my first thought was, "trail name HAS to be Jesus" lol. Excellent video. As an aspiring AT thru-hiker I appreciate the information and insight. So..when's the PCT?
I am so curious about your decision to not bring underwear. I have struggled with finding the right skivvies for a long time now and have been seriously considering going commando. I would love to hear more about your experience since you did it on a thru-hike. Great video, the TT toss was completely unexpected. ;)
ColeB what tent was that behind you? I made it to Atkin Va. had a family emergence and when home to MD.. Then I got blood clots in my lungs and that ended my adventure. Got gout in my knee this year did Delaware Gap to Union Town about 80 sobo the knee was killing me coming down the mtn. into Palmerton. Maybe 2017 I can start over. I retired from work to hike the trail it was a real bummer not getting to finish it.
+John Barber tarptent notch. 27 ounces 285$ really stoked i stumbled on his channel, I love zpacks but the prices bum me out. So tarptent may be what i start off hiking with and will upgrade over time.
I started off with some exofficio boxers then realized how pointless it was, especially considering the shorts I wore (Patagonia baggies) had built in mesh. Not having underwear saved me weight and hassle with keeping them clean.. which you won't.
Depends on the TSA agent, and even the airline you're flying on. United let me take a new, unused Snow Peak to Japan in my checked backpack, but told me I couldn't bring it on my return flight after use. So, I left it in Japan with a friend, since I had my old used one at home. Next trip there, I won't have to fly with one. Best bet is to buy a cheap chinese one from Amazon for ten bucks, fly with it new, and then give it away to someone else before your return flight. Make sure the airline and TSA know it's new and has never had fuel in it (put a note in your pack and keep it in the original packaging). TSA supposedly will allow a used canister stove if you can prove it was professionally purged of residual fuel, but then again, the airline may not. Liquid fueled stoves are pretty much not allowed at all, even empty and cleaned fuel bottles. I have friends that even had a clean, but obviously used brass achohol stove confiscated in checked baggage (with a TSA note inside). Fly disposable or forward it ahead if at all possible - the other option is to risk a missed flight and confiscation. Since there is no clear rule regarding canister stoves that the TSA and airlines agree on, just buy a can of cat food to be safe.
5:33: 'This Smart Water bottle made it the entire Appalachian Trail. I got like 700 miles in, and I was like "man I still got the same waterbottle. I should get rid of it." But then I was like, "NAH. I'm gonna make it go the whole way." And sure enough I did.' - the best
Which is exactly why I said it. That was one of the one things that no one talks about that is a HUGE factor. Its honestly just an oversight. No one thinks about it until they are out using it.
I found two ticks on me over the course of the entire trip and none of them ever dug into me. I do think lyme disease is serious but its just one of those things that you might have a problem with but you probably won't.
Neoair xtherms ain't that loud :0 then again, I only sleep alone and I don't move much. If you are worried about Norovirus enough to carry Purell, try either real soap or something like the MSR Guardian maybe.
good Vid... Freakin' TSA I have lost several things. I get the fuel canister but the stove? WTH?? I have lost several things. Backpacking taught me many things. Mostly to be self-reliant. I use to always have a multitool or Swiss Army knife in my Ditty bag when I traveled. Gone. and Gone. A small sewing kit...gone. MSR stove... gone.
You know you're a hardcore hiker when you're waving around a beat up piece of foam and say "it's the most luxurious thing you can do" lol. Thanks for the video.

Stored your trowel and spoon together? Hardcore man!
I have watched many a.t. gear videos and yours was the most entertaining! Awesome and congrats on making it!
Hey that means a lot. Thanks for watching mine for sure.
Loved this video especially since you got to the point quickly. Some of the gear videos make me want to stab myself in the eye with a spork, or I just fall asleep. Not planning a through hike, but working on longer hikes, so this is a big help.

Congratulations on your Finishing the A.T. it is an amazing thing that you did. I am 72 yrs and I wished I had done the AT but didn't.
the tent toss at 9:00 minutes in was SWEET lol...
Congrats! Always great to see what Thru-hikers actually ended up with at the end. ZPacks. Is awesome!
Thanks so much!
Great video. Nothing better than being entertained and informed at the same time. 🏕 Happy hiking and thanks for this video.
Congrats! you are back healthy and all the life time memories of the views, people etc.
Great video with wonderful suggestions. I agree with you on Zpacks pack and front pack. Congrats on finishing your thru hike.
Chuck Crookshanks Glad you agree! And I appreciate the thanks!
Love your energy Cole. Thanks for the video.
I love your attitude about everything!! Haha! It's always good to have a fun personality
i found out that if you wash EVERYTHING you have cloth material wise in PERMETHRIN that it not only keeps the bugs off but the mice tend to stay away as well... specially if there are other options for the mice to go after like other peoples stuff not washed in permethrin lol... not that we would wish that on anyone of course...

this water bottle is an AT thru hiker :P
Were you in CT in early August? I think we were both camping at Riga! I had my almost 4yo son with me. I'm happy to see you finished, congratulations!
Woah I quite possibly was! Glad I had met you although my memory is fuzzy.
ColeB I gave you an apple crisp backpackers pantry meal. I also think you reunited with some friends you hadn't seen in a while. There was a mother there as well hammock camping and section hiking with her high school aged daughter.

Roaming Gnome dude that's so light! Good luck with you! Don't be afraid to add weight for any comfort items ;) it's getting to Katahdin that counts!
I liked your intro. I am interested in trying an ultralight hike. I may be going thru-hiking with my sister in 2018, but doing training hike in 2017 in MD.
if your shelter is wet you can put it in the mesh pocket to dry as you hike
Very informative, entertaining and well edited; just brilliant. Thanks for making this.

Outstanding Accomplishment my man. We knocked out 1000 miles this summer. Our gear is almost identical. You nailed it👍👍

congrats! loved the vid! how did you like the tarptent? looking at a good solo ul tent
Had to comment again, you are making me crack up just throwing your stuff like that. Please keep making videos!
HA. Im tryyiinnnnggg to make more videos... and I will :D
Hey, ColeB! Thank you for this! I loved it! And, as we are planning on a SOBO leaving Katahdin on June 2nd, 2017, we really want to know about how you coped with rain.... especially on top of the Whites!

Totally different person pre trip vs. post trip. 😂😂😂
Enjoyed this video and definitely appreciate you sharing your gear post trail!!
How did you secure you zpacks chest pack so that it didn't flap, bounce, etc. And do you have any improvements you'd made in the chest pack if you were recommending a version 2.0? BTW - thanks for the awesome post trail gear report.
TSA took your stove from your carry-on or checked luggage? If the Notch would set up like that every time, I would buy one for sure.
They took it from my carry on. But told me I could not check it, that I had no choice but to trash it.
great stuff, I was Florida Girl - I did trail days then hiked a VA section.
Awesome Vid. No jacket, pants? you would go with quilt? Did it ever get below freezing? what months. you did it in two separate Hikes? Thanks.
Yes it got below freezing and I had tights and a Patagonia Nano Puff at all times. I did it in once single hike but had a trip to Hong Kong randomly near the beginning. I would go with a quilt next.
Thoughts on the nano puff?
+Stwmaniak i second that question
Great vid Cole, love it!
Congrats! Will you be posting videos from your thru hike?
Yes Im going to make one video for all the footage I have. This will come soon. I am waiting for the inspiration on how I want to edit all the footage. I want to it be special.
Sounds great! Another huge congrats! It was really cool to follow your thru hike on instagram.
hei Cole,
take a look at the Sea to Summit sleeping pads, Ultra Light Insulated. It's 3 oz heavier than Xlite ( for the 72"), but it inflates and deflated a lot faster (12 blows to inflate and 2 seconds to deflate) due to a nicer dual valve, its quite and more comfortable (my opinion). I have both and I like the S2S more.
Ive looked into the sea to summit so its good to hear you recommend it. Im not a huge weight weenie so thats not a problem for me. I may check it out.
Nice gear video, Mowgli! I second Black Diamond trekking poles, Tarptent shelter, and pocket rocket/titanium pot cooking system. Bummer the TSA confiscated your stove in Bangor!
Livia McAlee thank you Phoenix :)
congratulations on making thru hiking the AT
awesome video man. what company makes those shorts?
"Thats my tent.... it's sick."
When did you start? Did you have a different set of cold weather cloths to start?
Congrats on completing the AT Thru Hike! Very good lightweight setup. I watched Red Beard when he did his AT Thru Hike and PCT with Z Packs gear. Any future hikes planned or are you just going to relax and take in all of what you accomplished.
Right now my future will consist of sailing as far as I can see but I would be lying if I didn't have the PCT on my radar. Im confident whatever I am doing next will be an adventure and not so much relaxing. :)
I never tried sailing. That sounds like fun and good luck! Bob
This is a great video, Cole! As a photographer myself, it's been hard to figure out how to take images on the trail without sacrificing quality and manual modes. My Canon 7D/gear of course it's out of the question, so I might look into the Fuji or upgrade my iPhone right before the trail.
+Amber Redfield couldn't recommend the Fuji more. It's an absolute treat.
You're rad! Thanks for the tips.
best gear review yet
Congratulations man, great informative video.
Great video! Doing the PCT in '17?
Its a thought but probably not in '17. I bought a sailboat and am working on the sailboat and hopefully will travel the Caribbean next year in it. Ive got a video series on that experience so far.
lol. This vid was great. i gotta subscribe to this guy. Good advice that i will take to on my thru hike in next year or two. I've always wondered if anyone really only brings one set of clothes. So i appreciate the honesty. If im hiking 2200 miles i dont give a $@#% if im dirty. Good stuff!
Fun video. What rain jacket did you use? Were you happy with it?
Hey man I used a Patagonia Torrentshell. It was heavy and I barely used it because it would make me sweat. In hindsight I should've gotten either a higher quality, lighter and more packable rain jacket or a parka.
Thanks
NICE VIDEO DUDE! How long did it take you to hike the AT? Just for clarity, you went from GA to Maine...
This waterbottle is disgusting...cool! Love it dude.
Excellent video! Kept my interest.
ColeB thank you
Yo dude, did you wind up using the tyvek groundsheet?
Congratulations ..... good info!
You should thru hike the American Discovery TRAIL
This was awesome, thanks for posting!
Yo thanks man! Your comment is appreciated.
Congratulations!!👍👍
+Ol' Bob THANKS!
Late to the party but congrats. Just came across your video and my first thought was, "trail name HAS to be Jesus" lol. Excellent video. As an aspiring AT thru-hiker I appreciate the information and insight. So..when's the PCT?
Wait, you kept your spoon with your poop scoop?
I am so curious about your decision to not bring underwear. I have struggled with finding the right skivvies for a long time now and have been seriously considering going commando. I would love to hear more about your experience since you did it on a thru-hike. Great video, the TT toss was completely unexpected. ;)
Spoon Next to Deuce of spades (lol) WTG on your thru hike, That pad was comfortable but like you I went lighter I got the zlite small
YO the spade never touched shit hahaha
ColeB what tent was that behind you? I made it to Atkin Va. had a family emergence and when home to MD.. Then I got blood clots in my lungs and that ended my adventure. What is that ground cloth in your tent
you make my heart smile
I swear I think I have seen you in damascus or bristol TN asking for directions saying you were hiking the AT
Congrats dude!
Shoot And Thrill thanks bro ;)
Thanks for the video Cole. Just to clarify, when you say you packed no underwear, you mean you were "free" the whole trip?
I started off with some exofficio boxers then realized how pointless it was, especially considering the shorts I wore (Patagonia baggies) had built in mesh. Not having underwear saved me weight and hassle with keeping them clean.. which you won't.
Ah! Built in mesh explains it all for me.
that pot systems awesome too. wont change. ti sucks for real cooking. use a knock of pocket rocket for 10 bucks too. dig your gear dude.
This review is awsome!! I like so much your style! ;)
would the TSA let you travel if you checked the bag instead of carry on?
Depends on the TSA agent, and even the airline you're flying on.
I still have that bottle too. Everyone tells me its gross but to me its history.
Do I need to buy the partial solid interior for the Notch?
I would recommend just the mesh! Thats what I had
ColeB Okay thank you. Now I'm trying to decide between it and the Zpacks Duplex. so many decisions.
I ended up getting the Notch with the mesh interior. I'm just waiting for a sunny day to seam seal it!
20 degree sleeping bag good for thru hike?
Congratulations ! Noisey sleep pad...great tip. Have never heard that mentioned at all in any other vlog or gear review. Thanks !
Which is exactly why I said it. That was one of the one things that no one talks about that is a HUGE factor. Its honestly just an oversight. No one thinks about it until they are out using it.
Congrats man! Did you ever have problems with ticks throughout the hike?
I found two ticks on me over the course of the entire trip and none of them ever dug into me. I do think lyme disease is serious but its just one of those things that you might have a problem with but you probably won't.
I also want to add that I never used permethrin for my clothes and still had no tick problem. Thats not to say that you won't get ticks though.
ColeB Thanks for the reply man! Helped a lot!
"Nobody wants to get Norovirus, amiright?" Lol
Wait - you kept your spoon with your poop trowel?
1970351C2V that's exactly what i was thinking.
Congrats!
cool video... and glorious hair bro
MSR stove... gone.
Well done!
Congrats!!!
Madeline Ruos thanks so so so much!
Good stuff.
Those shorts give me life. *cat call*
Nice editing!
AS Informative as it is well done
Thanks my man!
You're a hardy person to do that trail!!
dude it's whatever thanks Jesus. light as the clouds
haha tsa in bangor got my pocket rocket too dangit.
Zpacks make excellent gear.
Luke Dankwalker I agree. Ultimately I'm really happy with them as a brand. I think their backpack is genius.
Good video, but I seems, besides being light weight, the pack sucks with holes and leaking.
