Great video and a great car :) I can confirm that Tesla Model S works very well in Norwegian winter. I have had my Model S for one month and driven in some of the worst winter conditions in Norway.
It required charging after just 200 km?? That's barely halfway between 2 major cities in Western Canada. Talk about and inefficient use of time. If I was to go backcountry skiing in our Rocky Mountains of Alberta, I wouldn't even get there and back. I'd get there, and be stuck there. No charging stations in those mountain locations, and never will be. Pretty impractical except in smaller/ warmer countries with denser populations.

Neat video of Winter Driving. Assume some serious Winter Boots on the car. Interesting to understand the cold air impact on the battery pack and range. My Sparrow in Seattle was never very happy in the cold months.
Probably, though Tesla says the car has a sleep function which should mitigate this. But a good rule of thumb is: don't do this. Any car will have problems if you do this (engine block may crack or seize up, certain things might freeze, etc.). If you try this, there is a chance you may freeze the battery, which is bad and expensive (just as cracking the engine block would be). So if your car is likely to be in low temperatures for a long time, either have a full battery or plug it in.
Excellent video, very impressive vehicle, and almost equally impressive Supercharging infrastructure!! AWD is still a requirement for many of us to avoid California snow chain requirements, however.

Eugen Istoc Not in Norway, the car is actually cheap, costs about the same as for VW Passat (140 hp). since there are no taxes involved when buying an electric car in Norway, but taxes for traditional cars are huge.
The question I have is whether or not the mass of the Model S is enough to remove the need for AWD (weight on all wheels for traction). I drive a 470HP RWD Chrysler 300 and I have no trouble on ice/snow, but NYC has mild winters so I'm usually never faced with deep snow conditions where AWD is an absolute requirement. I pull out my 2014 JGCSRT for that!
lazygamerz He just wanted to brag about what cars he owns- tires are more important than mass and he knows it. Anyone with common sense knows the Tesla Model S is not a light sedan. The Swedes got around in much lighter RWD Volvos for decades using proper winter tires.
I would love a tesla but i am wondering how the batteries hold up when it is around -35 to -40 Celsius like it has been here in Canada the last couple of weeks. have you done any testing under such conditions yet Tesla Motors?
I love the Tesla, I think that the states like Ohio, are jealous of the car and are trying to knot the car anyway they can. Keep up the good work and don't back down. you are doing a great job. I can't wait for the smaller Tesla comes out. I hope I can purchase one. Incidentally I try to use PayPal whenever I can, I am very happy with it. Joe T.
Does Tesla have multiple mode traction control to optimize tire slip for winter tires? All season tires tend to have maximum grip around 10% slip whereas winter tires generate maximum tractive force around 50% grip. It would be very beneficial, given the motor controller's very fine resolution, to optimize this slip within given steering angles. BTW: Nokian Hakka 7s are awesome, aren't they?
Overall, a very good video. The only part I take issue with is where they say there is no noticeable effect on range in the winter. Owners I talk to report anywhere from 10-30% reduction in range when the temperature drops.
probably because there is a greater need for warmer temperature in the cabin, but that has nothing really to do with the car itself. And if there is snow the rolling resistance would be greater than usual. But this happens to normal cars too, but I guess the electric engine itself does not need to warm up etc in the same way as a combustion engine, so it does not use extra power for that part, which would lead to "no noticeable effect on range"
I've been driving my Tesla Model S for over a year now and through an entire year of winter conditions in Canada. There is a minor drop in range do to snow on the road and extremely cold temps. No where near 30% ... maybe 10% at most. I have driven long distances (160+km) to the same destinations in both winter and summer and have never noticed a significant difference in battery usage. Typically you would drive slower in bad winter conditions vs good summer conditions. This would offset any difference in range do to cold or road conditions. I have a Audi Q5, but I prefer to drive my Tesla. They both have great handling in the winter, but the Tesla is far more convenient. I don't have to warm the engine, i can warm the interior without using hardly any energy, etc.
Jason Taylor nice to see some feedback from owners! I think your 10% loss of range is equivalent to the range loss on any vehicle due to, as you say, poor conditions and a general change in how you drive. And I am quite impressed by the fact that you prefer the Model S over your Q5, even though it is a car known for great quality and good all-weather performance.
My gasoline engine pickup gets 16 mpg in the summer 10.5 in the winter. That is about 30% reduction in cold weather. I have been keeping track for 6 years with two pickups and this happens every year.
Columbus Ohio. Love my model S, but... Using all weather tires bought standard with the car, the vehicle has handled poorly in only 3 inches of snow. I use my AWD Infinity with snow tires when there is snow on the ground. Energy efficiency drops at least 40% with temperatures below 0 F, frequent this winter.
If only it didn't cost a minimum of about $130k in Finland. But, I can wait for a less expensive model as I don't need that much interior space. And wait I shall.
I'd imagine that FR would be a bit of a problem if winter tires aren't used. I also wonder how the cold affects range. Sure it doesn't affect it 'a lot', but that's not saying much. Also would the heater further degrade batteries in long drives? I'm hoping for more Superchargers/EV chargers in Canada before EV becomes a truly viable alternative.
the displacement is not FR?!.. It has rwd but the engine itself is small and the power source, the batteries, are located in the floor so they just give better weight distribution. Ofc rwd is trickier than fwd in snow, but hey electronics can cure that, and some people like some drifting now and then, remember this is a FUN car, not a boring Gwizz ;)
I've driven my Model S for over a year including all of last winter. I regularly travel 150+ km to cottage country and have not noticed any significant difference in range summer vs. winter. Bad winter road conditions can make about a 10% difference, but this is mostly offset by driving "according to road conditions". Overall, the Model S is the best winter car I've ever owned ... even over my 2011 Audi Q5.
Perhaps I'll bring my Model S Tesla store for a look see. My experience is that there is a dramatic loss of efficiency as the temperature drops even just into the 30's F.

Would really like to afford this car, but can't where i live now. Also looking a way to move to Norway or Sweden to live and work there with my family. Hope one day soon :)
-10 or -15 is good, especially when it doesn't impact the range. However, where I woke up this morning in Alberta it was -32, plus windchill of -40-something, and we get more than 15 cm of snow, and it isn't cleared very often. This is the conditions Tesla needs to address for me to buy one. And price, of course.
Still can't afford it, even in Norway. It's still an expensive car for me (I drive a 12 year old cheap WV who drinks gasoline, ironically). But I dream about the Model S every day. I would give almost anything to own a car like this. Seriously.
Could you please explain why? With 47/53 weight distribution, you will get better traction with RWD. Also, with FWD, some of the friction will go to steering the car.
spluto150 agreed. and also, fwd cars that slide are difficult to get straight again because both steering, and the driving wheels are without friction. and at normal speeds, a good set of grippy tires and the weight of the model S would make it quite stable i think. Never driven it, so can't say for sure, but I think rwd is just as good if you don't push it to the limits :)
Actually those benefits disappear in Norway when we exceed 50,000 electric cars or we come to the year 2017. At least that was the promise our politicians gave us when they gave those benefits. Really I think the benefits will disappear quicker than that.
It would help a lot if you could not get into (inner)city limit in a petrol car. Being able to drive there would become a status symbol. That will sell some e cars. But don't expect too much of an oil country spying for the NSA...
Looks like Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 studded winter tires. compare the tread pattern at 1:24 to this www.nokiantires.com/tyre?id=131172&group=1.01&name=Nokian%20Hakkapeliitta%207
DINBAR1 I believe you are correct! I have the R2 tires on my MS, but I only drive on snow once a week in the winter. I imagine those Nokian Hakkapeliita 7s make a world of difference.
I propose that gasoline-powered transportation is better for winter driving because of the increased temperatures that our new atmosphere will bring to most areas
Congratulations #ElonMusk #Tesla for all the evolution of automotive. How amazing everything you guys are doing #ElonMusk your visionary of expansion and sustainability, technology and space future. Please I need to at least work for you #ElonMusk I love you so much!
It's a good job Norway give HUGE tax breaks for EVs. Their new car tax is 100% (yes, you pay the MSRP for the car PLUS that much again on top in tax), making something like an Audi A6, which would be a decent Tesla Model S competitor, almost $250,000 brand new. The Model S was actually the best selling car in Norway for September.
So in sub zero conditions you have 20% range loss and if you wanna stay warm turn on the electric heater that will eat more or less than half your range. If you go with the biggest battery pack 230 miles and it's starts snowing you'll be left with 92 miles? Better pack a generator in that fronck just in case.
don't forget the free parking and bus lanes will only be available until a certain amount of such cars are on the roads, once they will exceed certain amount, they will lose these benefits because it simply won't be manageable anymore
Didnt realize that Norway had policies allowing electric vehicles to use bus lanes and park for free! Those are great reasons to buy an EV - as compelling to consumers as reducing your carbon footprint.
This looks like a great car and that I may very well one day even consider owning such a fabulous vehicle. Although there would need to be a lot more charging stations down here in Toronto, GTA. I'd also like to mention that these winter driving conditions don't do justice to relying on a Tesla to get him to places other vehicles simply could not reach. To be honest, my 2010 corolla FWD equipped with four Michelin x-ice tires have gotten me to so many places during winter storms in Toronto where the snow had not even been plowed. These little hills he is going up with the snow plowed is a joke. Lets see a better video of this vehicle being tested on a steep hill without snow being plowed to really see what this vehicle is capable of. Not to mention the sub-zero driving condition upgrade options offer heated steering wheel, 3 zone rear seat heaters, wiper blade defrosters, and washer nozzle heaters all for $1150 according to the teslamotors website, but what about a block heater? I think that should be included as well considering it would improve cold weather comfort and convenience. I do like the 470 hp and AWD which is something I am considering my next vehicle to have AWD for sure, HP as long as its 300+ I am good. Overall I enjoyed watching this video, but still think that there could be a better video on relying on a Tesla to get to places other vehicles simply could not reach.

Would really like to afford this car, but can't where i live now. Also looking a way to move to Norway or Sweden to live and work there with my family.
Hope one day soon :)
Amazing car
Isn’t it true that when you drive a Tesla in the frozen winter the range drops to less than half? Same with towing.
Love you all godbless
-10 or -15 is good, especially when it doesn't impact the range. However, where I woke up this morning in Alberta it was -32, plus windchill of -40-something, and we get more than 15 cm of snow, and it isn't cleared very often. This is the conditions Tesla needs to address for me to buy one. And price, of course.
Try reindeer.
thranx11111 Santa, being a Canadian citizen, has first dibs on all our reindeer. However, they do fly so they have that over the Tesla.
Still can't afford it, even in Norway. It's still an expensive car for me (I drive a 12 year old cheap WV who drinks gasoline, ironically). But I dream about the Model S every day. I would give almost anything to own a car like this. Seriously.
It really needs to be front wheel drive or all wheel drive for Norway and other icy climates, but that should become available with the Model X.
It does fine with rear wheel drive.
How muvh are the model s Premium Edition
This is my next new car!
What is the music in the background?
Are you sure the ski rack isn't taking range?
are you sure you need to ask that question?
sub zero celsius, or farenheit?
How much are these vehicles???
Whats that about driving in bus lanes ? And free parking wut ? How does le work
Bus lane, what a way to promote clean cars. Until too many tr to share the bus lane. Double bus lane? :)
hahaha what a fantastic point! couldnt agree more :)
But don't expect too much of an oil country spying for the NSA...
very good car
Are those the Nokian R2 tires?
Looks like Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 studded winter tires. compare the tread pattern at 1:24 to this www.nokiantires.com/tyre?id=131172&group=1.01&name=Nokian%20Hakkapeliitta%207
DINBAR1 I believe you are correct! I have the R2 tires on my MS, but I only drive on snow once a week in the winter. I imagine those Nokian Hakkapeliita 7s make a world of difference.
car of my dreams, I dreamed long before they invented
Winter, Summer or what ever the season. Tesla can deal with it easily!! Perfecto!!
Minus fifteen? Is it "cold"? Try driving it at minus thirty! And after it waits for you all night long at minus forty on the street.
Drive in the bus lane???
How much exactly winter affects the Tesla Model S range? Can someone Tesla model S owner comment on this.
Check the videos of "Bjørn Nyland". He has three long videos that really show how well it works.
jeeeeeh deg er i norge!
I propose that gasoline-powered transportation is better for winter driving because of the increased temperatures that our new atmosphere will bring to most areas
Lol. What? One country's atmosphere isn't a closed cycle.
A Taxi service operates out of the OSLO Airport, they ONLY use Tesla Vehicles.
So in sub zero conditions you have 20% range loss and if you wanna stay warm turn on the electric heater that will eat more or less than half your range. If you go with the biggest battery pack 230 miles and it's starts snowing you'll be left with 92 miles? Better pack a generator in that fronck just in case.
best to preheat ONLY when plugged in to Supercharger, that way Inside is warm and Toasty and battery is Optomized for maximum storage.
don't forget the free parking and bus lanes will only be available until a certain amount of such cars are on the roads, once they will exceed certain amount, they will lose these benefits because it simply won't be manageable anymore
Didnt realize that Norway had policies allowing electric vehicles to use bus lanes and park for free! Those are great reasons to buy an EV - as compelling to consumers as reducing your carbon footprint.
I like it !!! Until I buy a Tesla, I drive my Electric Twizy in Belgian snow. Fun fun fun!!! Still waiting for new snow however...
MUST! WIN! LOTTERY!
Nice car duuuuuuudes
That's cute.
-Subaru
Yes... and a great set of snow tires.. DUH!
Must find a way to pay for a Tesla S. This car was made for me!!!!
Want so much - now for the affordability part
A used TESLA model S sells for $40,000. you can Lease it or Finance it.
A Tesla AWD wagon would be awesome.
This was before the dual motor cars
They are not just testing drivability, but also how batteries perform in cold weather which is an issue in electric devices.
