I grew up in Philadelphia, PA and this was probably the only country song I remember from my young years. This song was played on pop stations as crossover, maybe as a comic relief. I loved it then and still do. A CLASSIC!!!

Well sometimes we just think that the songs were just written , isn't it great to know there was a Mr. Clowers and so happy to hear the story as I too (like so many others ) have been listening to this since the 60's. Thank-you.

I first heard the song in high school and the story behind it when I was stationed at Little Rock Air Force base from 66-70. My first wife was from Morrilton, AR and one day she and her folks took me on a drive around the county and they pointed out Wolverton Mountain. Oddly enough, after we divorced, I ended up having a long term relationship with a woman from Center Ridge, AR who went to school with Clifton's daughter!

Here is one of the "greatest generation" people who made this country great. This is a picture of Clifton Clowers plowing his field at the age of 100. Clowers was the subject of a Merle Kilgore hit song called "Wolverton Mountain." Mr. Clowers lived to be 102 (1891 - 1994) where he actually lived and farmed that land on Wolverton Mountain. A solid American who was just who he was, although he rubbed shoulders with a lot of famous people after the song was written about him.
That's the kind of man I want to be! Just be me, warts and all, a responsible human being plowing my own field. These were the men who made America great, we need a lot more of them today; and a lot fewer of those "give-me," "entitled" "hand-out" people in this country. Hey, plow your own field. That's what Clifton Clowers did.

I loved this song ever since I was a kid. It's like the southern American version of a fairy tail, where knights try and rescue a princess and die in the process. I wonder if the guy singing the song makes it; or he ends up as one of the many rotting skeletons randomly spread across the mountain. Why is Clifton Clowers so possesive? Did he lose his wife? It's ironic in that no one has seen his daughter and lived to tell about. She obviously has no dental and sanitary care up on the mountain, and probably has an all meat diet and wears animal skins and a burlap sack. So, why does everyone think that she is such a beauty? They might be shocked to find out otherwise. She also has no education. Women must be scarce in that area.
