Scrap Tape is a fun and fairly new product. It helps you repurpose scraps into usable strips of fabric. Watch how easy it is to use! Simply sew your strips to the scrap tape, and then trim away the excess.

Thanks for introducing this. Keeping it one long length might frustrate me but cutting it in a more manageable piece might work to make scrap blocks.
If you already know what length you want to use it, then sub-cutting slightly longer than that length would make sense! 🥰
You might want to highlight the fact that this is water soluble. Quilters have used paper tape (plain adding machine tape) since the 80’s but the advantage of this is not having bits of paper left in the seams from tearing away the paper. I will have to try this to see if the softness is an advantage or not. The paper tape gives you a stable base which is especially nice when you are working with lots of very small pieces with bias edges.
So should you only use a dry iron since the tape is water soluble?
Yes, use a dry iron or a pressing tool (like a roller). The nice thing with the water soluble is if you don't rinse it out too well, some of it stays behind in the fabric and "starches" your fabric for you!

Not stiff at all! I haven't actually dunked it in water yet, but even if it wasn't water soluble, I don't think it would add any real bulk to a quilt. 🥰

The scrap tape looks like light weight interfacing. Is that what it is? It would be great to not have to pick it out like you do of FPP.

Could you use for binding? Or would it cause the binding not to crinkle? I like the crinkle effect after washing.
It wouldn't prevent crinkle, since it washes out. But I'd be worried about the bulky seams in the scrap tape making a bulky binding. I get asked about binding with scrap tape a lot ... maybe I should just give it a go one of these days. 🥰
Scrap Tape sounds like a great way to use the scraps from blocks in a quilt to make a border for that quilt. This would have the border reflect the colors, textures, prints, etc. from the main body of the composition. Yet, two related questions. First, how does the Scrap Tape get its grip on the scraps. (I often find getting a grip a bit challenging.) Does it have a mild adhesive, such as painters' tape, or tiny suction cups like the stick-to-itself food wrap? I assume that once one uses the tape to make a new strip, one removes the tape, before sewing the strip into the quilt. Second, is it re-usable or does it (like me) loose its grip?
BTW, due to my comments about the Hera Marker, the seam roller you love is a borrow. Wallpaper hangers use it to chase air bubbles from behind the paper, then to assure the paper's edge is tight to the wall. They have an odd brush they can also use, but the roller does not tear the paper as much as the brush can. For a paper hanger, torn wallpaper is a really bad day. Next time you love that roller, thank a paper hanger's craft-ancestor. If you are like me, you just might loose yours and find the quilt store out of stock, at which point, you can look at the wallpaper store or the wallpaper department of a hardware store or home improvement store, anywhere wallpaper is available.

Scrap tape doesn't grip to the scraps. It is a foundation. Just like foundation papers in foundation paper piecing, the only way they are connected are with the stitches. It provides a guide for keeping the strip 2.5" in width, and keeping it a straight strip. And, it helps support all the bias edges from the wonky scraps.
After the scrap tape is no longer needed, the piece is put in water, and all the scrap tape dissolves. That way you don't have to worry about tearing out the papers. Rinsing it out is so much faster!

I have used adding machine tape before but you have to peel off the paper which is a pain! This is a great alternative.
Some folks don't mind peeling the paper, but I think this is a much better alternative.
At about 5minutes into the video you used what looks like a magnifying stone.....I couldn't understand what you called it and only see links here for the tape and roller. What you're seeing is a Spot on Dot. It is a magnifying lens with removable adhesive on the back. It sticks to any ruler so you can see the lines better. Then you just pull it off when you're done. Is scrap tape just basically interfacing cut into 2.5 inch strips?
Yes, it is a water-soluble interfacing. It comes in 2.5" wide, 5" wide, and 13" wide.
I’m going to get some scrap tape. Seems better than adding machine tape!
It is more expensive than adding machine tape, but you save *so* much time not having to use a smaller stitch length or tearing out the papers.
And for anyone reading this comment wondering about the smaller stitch length - when you use a technique where you have to pull out papers, you want to have a shorter stitch length. This creates a stronger seam for standing up against the pulling when ripping the paper. It also makes more holes per inch in the paper, which weakens the paper along the seam and makes tearing easier. Bit, more stitches means the machine can't stitch the same length of seam as fast. So, it takes a tiny bit longer. Which, over the course of 25 yards of scrap tape, can really add up.
I just discovered this technique from another RUclipsr and I think it is brilliant ! Do you leave the scrap tape on or does it wash out ? Thanks again for this demo.
Once the quilt top is done, I rinse it out. Then give the whole top a good press before quilting it.
Great video however, can you explain why the tape is really needed? What purpose does it serve when you can make
2 1/2” scrap pieces in the same way without the tape?
I think the tape makes it easier. As I line up a new piece to be sewn in, I can easily check to make sure it will stay within my 2 1/2" width. The tape will also help stabilize any bias edges so my strip doesn't get stretched out. And the tape makes sure my strip edges stay straight. Without the tape, my strip might curve a bit over time.
Can you do this without the tape? Maybe. And if you can - go for it! Personally, I'll keep using the tape - I think the tape will help me with a more accurate strip. ❤

Glad the explanation helped! In quilting, there is often more than one way to get a desired result... just have to weigh the pros and cons of each to figure out which is best for you. 🥰
And the seams have to be pressed to one side too😮..
Unless you sew your scraps together, press them open then sew then to the tape by stitching in the ditch.... Think I would prefer to ditch the tape 😊
If the tape is not for you, that is fine! There are lots of options available for quilters - pick the ones that work for you! 🥰

Once you finish the quilt top, you rinse out the tape. Then you quilt it. 🥰

So I have to soak the top, dry it, and then sandwich it and quilt it??
I rinse it in my sink, then hang it over the shower door overnight. In the morning, I give it a good press, and it is ready to quilt. 🥰

I've done it with three quilts, and it does not shrink. It is the high heat of the dryer that is the culprit behind shrinkage. Because it is only being rinsed (no agitation of the fibers) and hung dry (no heat from the dryer), I have had no problems. 🥰

I'm in Australia and I bought a roll of Scrap Tape for $25 and I love it so much I wanted to buy another roll but prices were up around the $45 mark which was a real turn off for me.

From what I understand the tape is water soluble. Wouldn't a light weight fusible Pellon such as 911FF serve the same purpose? It can be cut into any width and utilized in much the same manner.

Yes, you could do this technique with other products (I've heard of some people doing it with a roll of register receipt paper). The benefit to this Scrap Tape is that it is already cut to the size you want. And, because it is water soluble you can easily remove the extra bulk. Depending on the finished project, you may not want the bulk of an interfacing. And with receipt paper you have to pull out all the paper which is a pain.
@@sharonsimons1471 I think this would be a good alternative IF the Pellon is water soluble...otherwise, you would be adding a lot of extra bulk to the strip.
You can do a similar technique with a tear-away stabilizer as well. But you'll want to shorten your stitch length to stabilize the stitches for when you tear it out. And you'll have to spend time tearing it out at the end.

Yup! It is water soluble, but not fusible. And better to use a Seam roller - a hot iron can melt it.

I have a dumb question.... what is the difference if you just sew the scraps together without the tape ? I don’t understand what the tape really does for you ?
Not a dumb question at all! The tape does several things:
1. It provides stability. These scraps have a lot of bias edges going on. The tape keeps those from getting stretched while piecing them together.
2. It is a template/guide when sewing. Sewing scraps into a strip 2.5" wide without having the strip start going crooked would be impossible without some kind of template or guide. Here I can see if my scrap is to small or if it needs to be moved over before sewing to fit in the 2.5" width.
3. It is a guide when trimming. This roll is many yards long. Trying to trim that up and have it be straight on my home cutting mat would be tricky. The tape is a cutting guide so I keep the strip straight.

Why do you say the pattern and tape are in your shop? They aren't. I've gone through your shop your Facebook your Instagram, NO there's no pattern or tape. I went through 4 pages looking for the pattern, no pattern

i wasnt thinking and put my cold soda glass sown kind of near my scrap lace project and some of it melted! luckily i could fix it before my project got badly damaged, but the stuff is meant to "rinse out" so ... spilled drink or even condensation can make it start getting at least "goopy"

I make yardage out of my scraps but start like this just joining together in strips or 2-4-6-8 etc., I don’t really see what the benefit of the tape is you don’t use it when patchworking surely?
The benefits of the tape are that it keeps scraps in line, so the strip doesn't start to curve into a J. It also is a foundation so that if you have strips with bias edges, they don't stretch and go wonky.
Don’t understand why you didn’t mention the water soluble factor of the scrap tape, which is the whole purpose of using this instead of paper adding machine tape.

What happened to your resolution? Why use the tape? Can't you just piece everything as you go?
Not sure about the resolution? Should be consistent throughout the video ... but sometimes distributing over the web means that video streaming gets altered...
The purpose of the tape is two-fold. First, it acts as a stabilizer. I'm using scraps cut on the bias, and this stabilizing layer will support the bias edges, so they don't stretch and go completely wonky.
The second is that it keeps the edges straight. Stitch two pieces together. Then add another. And another. And another. When you go to square everything up, you will likely find that your "strip" has become an arc, and you can't straighten the two sides along the full length. The strip is a "target" so you keep your scraps along a straight line.
@@CarolinaMoore thanks! Of the video's I've seen so far, this is the only one that's not, at least, 720, and it's set for 720. Weird! Anyway, thanks for explaining the use of the tape. That makes sense. Sort of a quilt as you go, thing. Very interesting. Another way to use up my scraps.
