For #9 you can just hit Ctrl+Y to toggle between color/greyscale modes, and I believe it will give you a more accurate read too.

Out of interest, do you use or have you used Corel Painter at all? If so it would be great to see how you use it - if not, perhaps you could talk about why?
Thanks Lucas! And I used Corel Painter a long time ago. I am just more comfortable with Photoshop so it works for me. It’s mainly because photoshop has better tools for image editing in addition to painting, which gives me more flexibility in terms of using photos in combination with painting.
