As for the store clerk confronted by the Mother, we don't know the circumstances of the City, Neighborhood, history of thefts at that store, etc., to make a judgment. I had a retail store for 30 years and, with the "no bail" and no prosecution for thefts society we live in, I looked at everyone and installed cameras. The store has to protect against theft or they'll close down and move to a safer town. Politics and local thefts are the reasons I closed my retail store and went 100% online sales. I feel so much better now.
I don't blame the cashier. I'm sure they have plenty of theft and probably from one particular group and it is in their best interest to force that method of paying for items. The mother can get upset all she wants, but it all comes down to probability. Profiling seems bad, but it works.

I taught at an inner city middle school for years and the small store at the end of the park, had stuff stolen all of the time. The kids walk around talking and as they do that, Some would ld slip something here and there or slide it in their bag. So first, the owner did just what the clerk said, get your stuff and let's get over here to pay and move on out. She just dkdnt have enough experience explaining what is going on. Color didnt matter, and i bet it didnt here. The mother assumed it was a race issue...Not everything is. The owner of the bus. I was speakiing of, next had only so many in a time and backpacks had to stay outside. They still managed to rob him. So he closed the store ofr a while. I think the grandmother was wrong. Theft is a huge problem, & if those kids were innocent & just wanted to legitimately purchase something, they should understand about the store trying to cut down on losses.
