I have a piece of padded rubber backed drawer liner that I keep in my cart for taking to classes and it works great. I recently signed up for my first retreat this fall and decided I also wanted a mat to store things in since I know that space will be limited. I made my padded mat and then sewed my drawer liner to the back of it to make sure it didn't go anywhere. I also really think that having the apron part full of tools helps it stay in place.
Great video! I recently bought a Janome mat at a quilt retreat. Have not done this diagnostic, but plan to, to see how the decibel and movement performs. You are so kind to do all the work to make our favorite hobby more enjoyable!
I like your independent reviews for solutions to common sewing issues using a scientific method. The portable tables do tend to bounce and I found the best place to place the sewing machine is closer to one end of the table to reduce vibrations. Now I have tested data for even more improvements. And, I happen to have that same exact machine for close to 25 years and love it. It is well traveled and used. And routinely serviced. Thanks for the well done video.
I have a brother embroidery machine that I took to the sewing retreats. I was embarrassed at how much noise it created vs the other machines. I got the madam sewing pad and it cut the nose down so much. Thank you so much for the learning videos. I went to a quilting class 2 days ago and talked about you. I even showed the ladies and teacher the technique you showed on pressing with the pen solution. ❤
A nonslip option is something called Dicem. It comes on a roll and resembles a shelf liner, but it has more tack. I got some from my occupational therapist to help me with gripping things and preventing things from sliding. I happened to put my sewing machine on top of it when I was doing a large project at my kitchen table, and I was really impressed that even after hours and hours of sewing machine was exactly where I put it.
Nice efforis for testing. 👌👏 I use bath mat under my machine. Its non-slippery texture prevented the movement and the padded carpet surface shielded the noise. The tenant downstairs didn’t complain.
I have a Sew Mat I purchased from Sewing Machine Plus and for another machine I found a rubber mat for standing on at Bed Bath and beyond for $8. Both do the job and don't move on my folding tables. I don't have any vibration when sewing fast. Years ago we bought that rubber shelf liner and set the machine on that. Amazing how we quilters tried everything to stop the movement of the machines.
I think you should try other options such as the thick rubbery shelf liner that quilters cut to size to keep their foot pedals from sliding away. Also try sad that is made from quilted soft and stable. I did not think any thing used had much change on the sound level.
What a great thing for you to do - thank you for taking the time to do this. I'm ordering a silicone mat right now - I have to make one of these quilted aprons. Do you have instructions for that? Great job!
You're so welcome! Actually the pattern for the "Quilter's Stitch and Sew Apron" is going to be part of our 25 Days of Christmas Countdown! If you are signed up on our website, we'll be sending out the details as soon as it's available. (www.joyfulandmerryquilting.com). Thank you so much!!!
I put a thin yoga mat and put it under my sewing machine. I put another yoga mat on the floor to keep my foot petal from moving. $5 Yoga mat from $5 below and just cut it the same measurement needed
This was very interesting, thank you! Have you done a video on your foot control moving around? I bought a Madame Sew mat and it moves around on me on a laminate floor.
I did two videos on that subject. There's one on the about the foot on the hard floor and another on carpet. Here are the links: ruclips.net/video/ySuSvgdKSNo/видео.html and ruclips.net/user/shortsLKXHGbg2Khc
I do - it's still available for free on our Night Owl Quilting Page for a few more days: www.joyfulandmerryquilting.com/owl Once the free promotion is over it will be available for sale in our store at www.joyfulandmerryquilting.com Thanks for asking!
@@joyfulandmerryquilting thank you so very much for the link. However, my question was about the apron that you sit underneath your sewing machine to hold your tools. I watched your video on how to have your sewing machine be quieter and not move as much at retreats. I learned so much and I’m sure that my Sewing buddies will be glad for what I learned. 😉
I think that since a cutting mat isn't "cushy", it could keep your machine in place a bit more than just placing it on the table, but it probably won't do much to tone down the noise. Thanks for watching!

I have used the shelf liner, but didn't find it to be better than those products that I tested. In addition, I had to buy a whole roll (which I did), but felt the other products worked better.

Yay, I requested this video, thanks so much for testing this! I think a silicone mat and a travel machine apron is in my future. Thank you!
You are so welcome!!!! Thank you for your suggestion! It was perfect!

Excellent! Thank you so much Mary for conducting this test and sharing the results. I really appreciate it. Have a great day! ❤😊
Thank you and you're welcome!!!
We have a jellyroll race next week with our guild.... Perfect timing. Thank you.
Ooh - please let us know how it goes! I know how machines tend to run around the table during a jelly roll race. Two races going on! :-)

Yes!!! Thanks so much for sharing! So many great options out there to make our sewing experience that much better! Thanks for watching!
Creating quilts by sewing is a bestest interest and so very interesting.
It is!
I used rubber shelf liner. Love it
I found that, for me, the shelf liner didn't hold as well or last as long, as the other products I tried. Thanks for sharing your experience!
Great video! Very useful information. I have a tool mat but need to get a silicone mat to put under.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
Hi Mary, good test. Will try this at my next retreat 🙏
Thanks for watching! Enjoy your retreat!

Great video now I need to make the quilted apron!
Yes! The pattern will be coming out in December! Stay tuned!!! Thank you so much for watching!

I use my wool mat since I iron on a board!😉 Put it to good use! 😅
Great idea!
You're pretty amazing! Thanks for coming up with interesting and informative topics.
Wow - you've made my day! Thank you! If you have any suggestions, please let me know!

I am a Janome girl
Thank you! Yes - I LOVE Janome as well! Thanks for watching!
Under my quilting pad I use a double thickness of “rubber” shelf liner. No movement and the noise level is tolerable.
Thank you for sharing!
Thanks Mary, I always take a quilted pad for my machine, now I will add the silicone mat. 🪡
I am too! I think it makes a pretty substantial difference!
Not to mention trying to use your knee needle lifter lever at the same time.
Thanks for watching.
do a cut matt work it ??? is like plastic too

@@joyfulandmerryquilting thanks for the video. it kinda work and is true the noise is like the same
Madam Sew mat looked like the machine had more bounce (even though it didn’t move).
Thanks for watchig.
