Love the Half Back role. Used it with my 2021 Spurs team in a 4-3-3 tactic. Hojbjerg was my main man with Dier his back up. It tended to force the CBs into a wider role thus creating the 'Wide Centre Back' Role before they introduced it. I had a very good run with an AP-Sup and Mez in front of him.
Another great explanation Stinger. Watching Fabinho in the highlights you put together, it looks like a role that could be a threat from distance if the player has decent long shots - he seemed to get a lot of space about 30 yards from goal during attacks.
@@StingerNeilD I was thinking a bit about the passing whilst watching your video. Some player traits might be useful too perhaps for this role? Looks like he has a bit of time and space to spray balls to the flanks maybe?
Another great video, I love the Half Back its such an underated role because it seems on the face of it a very defensive option, but actually it is a role for an aggressive, attacking formation. Would love to see a video following on nicely from this one that features Wing Backs/Full Backs...
I love the Half back in a possession oriented team, if you have a half back with great passing as well and good composure, you're almost guaranteed to play out the back perfectly. I think aside from everything you said here which is spot on, the half back is an incredibly underrated, press resistent playmaker. Kind of like how Arsenal now use Thomas Partey, drops in between the two defenders, takes the ball and creates a problem for pressing teams, if they press him, he picks the ball and sweeps great passes in between the lines to more creative players which can then bomb forward. My easily most favorite role in the game.
Following Daljit's suggestions, I have a lot of success with a halfback and 3 at the back: with 2 attacking wide centre backs. He seems to be the ideal cover when one of my wide centre backs attacks and I didn't notice any confusion with my central defender: somehow they seem to automatically form a kind of 2 at the back.
I didn't include wide centre back versions because I haven't tested it fully yet so didn't want to give an opinion either way. I do agree in theory it can definitely work 👍
@@StingerNeilD oh, neither have I. I'm far from an expert and this is my first proper tactic in FM 22. Also the ratings of the HB are quite dire (Hojbjerg might not be a great choice anyway). But from what I see during the match I do like what I'm seeing.
@@Kussol123 that's the best way mate watch the game and if you're happy with it keep it going! Its why when I'm building a new tactic I watch in 2d so I can see the whole pitch
I really like Franck Kessie as a Half-Back. Maybe not the most traditional player for the HB role, but he's someone in the mould of Toure Yaya who was always immense in CM, CDM, CB and even AM for Barca and City. What Kessie lacks in positional awareness (compared to Fernandinho/Fabinho) or technicals (Busquets/Rodri), he more than makes up for with incredible work rate and bravery, and most important his sheer physical presence. The man is like a fortress, prefect for a ball-dominant side that needs to use him as an outlet for maintaining possession. With at least a 15 in determination, aggression, bravery, teamwork, workrate and stamina... not to mention his massive 18+ strength and balance, he will rarely, rarely lose the ball. This is purely in FM, have no idea if Kessie would do that well IRL. But he seems to be leaving Milan on a free and hey, Barcelona are said to be interested...
A half back and a box to box midfielder is the dream. I play a 4-1-1-4 with two inverted wingers (one on stay wide and one on stay narrow) and two advanced forwards. The half back makes it a 3-3-4 when the wing backs push up and it also acts as a 4-2-4 at times. Luiz from SLB is the dream HB. Wonder kid and a half!
Thank you Liam. To be honest buddy there never seems to be the interest in those type of vids. I have just started what you describe on twitch last week with Darlington
Love the half back role. Been using it since about FM12. Covers the defense so well as long as you have the correct midfield roles in front of him.

Sounds perfect that. And your bang on with the half back forcing the CBs out too

Nailed that mate, and he will have a lot of time for passing to so that's also vital

Perfect I'd say
Used HB for my 4132 ,always bags a few long range goals every season, usually Esposito from spal or Antov
Great setup to use it in
