  • In this episode of Battle Lines, we speak to Europe editor James Crisp about the attempted assassination of Slovakian PM Robert Fico. Then we speak to Gia Japaridze, a former Georgian diplomat who was beaten up in what he believes was punishment for his opposition to a controversial foreign agent's law. And finally, we speak to Robin Forestier Walker, a British filmmaker who lives in Tbilisi, about how protesters have reacted to the law.

Of course if this had happened in the uk the assassin would be labelled ‘far right’.

In Slovakia, the right is calling him "far left" and the left is calling him "far right". I´m Czech, wrote an article on him and it seems he held all sorts of views and sometimes changed them. Like, he seemed to be against the Romany nation, but he liked the president Čaputová who is absolutely against any hints of racism. The guy was full of paradoxes. What he was clear about is that he disliked Fico as a person and was generaly very unhappy about the polarization of Slovak society.

Cintula has no links to Slovak Soldiers, he wanted to discourage them. What kind of a link is this?

The Prime Minister seems to be a walking contradiction

It´s "Fitso", not "Feeko"! "C" is pronounced as "ts" in all Central and Eastern European languages that use the Latin alphabet, except Romanian. (Estonian, Latvian, Czech, Polish, Hungarian, Croatian and others, including Slovak.)

The same process happening in Turkey. A Turkic Baathist regime.
