To keep most insects a way use mints garlic chunks around the bin its self. The bugs hate the smell of the garlic.

Bob , since i made my wicking bed worm farm (from your proto type) i have the whole thing on a stand which is then set apon a Water/Oil mote so ants cant get it. Well great so far sucess as its still not the Real Heat of the year yet as im in Australia. Great to get updates on your farming as i enjoy the clear descriptions offered.

Bob , Iv cooked my worms( 45 °Celsius =113 °Fahrenheit outside at present) in the
"Urban Worm Bag Worm Composting Bin" I was trying. "Failed idea"
But luckily iv also a Toat (storage container) set up (your plan) which works a treat so I'm going to do another Toat (storage container) worms are happy in the Toat it seems to keep much cooler in the hot summer than any method iv tried. I do add a bottle of frozen water to the toat each day as a little treat for the worms. thanks
@@daak1234 hi, I'm in SW Qld, in our hottest of hots, I used a frozen water bottle as well as the scrap smoothie frozen into 'take away' sized chunks. The food keeps the worms cool and because there is a definite cool and warm side to the bed, the worms work out quickly what is best for them. I did 'bake' my first lot of worm babies too, but learned quickly that the freezer is my friend. good luck!
Loren Ipsum great ideA about the frozen, I now have 2 large 12” sq or 30cm sq Tupperware containers, as I’m freezing one the other is in on top of the worm farm it’s keeping them happy so with Bobs wicking bed worm farm idea now it’s first year my worms survived a 45deg + summer
So many ways to compost with worms. This is a good one. I just have 2 8' lengths of old wire fencing connected together at the edges to form 3 ft. high wire tubes and fill with non- meat scraps and grass and weeds. one is in the full sun and one is in the shade. They seem to take care of themselves. Come early winter, I have some useable compost to mulch the gardens. Worms abound in the grass one as soon as the pile gets cold.. They come, and they go, I guess. By the way, I move the bins to new spots every time I empty them. It really helps keep the weeds down and helps fertilize the soil it sits on for future garden beds.

I’ll have a video on that soon. But the idea is feed on one side and harvest the other.
Just came across this today, and watched your other videos about your worm farm. What size (gallons) tote are you using? It looks way bigger that the std 27 gallon sold at Lowes & Home Depot
How do you harvest the compost ? Just dig it and put more peat moss in worm wicking container?

What if you put mulch the top 3-4" of the tote?
Is there any problem with putting this worm bed in total shade --like in my shop?
how is the landscape fabric holding up?
I’ve had some beds over 5 years seem to be fine so far
There is no lid or cover over the top? Seems like birds would find it and have a hay day? Couldn’t you cut a section weed guard and use a bungee cord to keep it in place?
You could I just keep cardboard or newspapers on top of the bed, I think it would get too hot in Texas but you maybe in a colder place.
Hallsome Farm since weed guard lets water and air through I don’t think it would be to hot. That would keep the fire ant and anything else out too.
Where are you located?
He mentions plenty of times he's from Texas, hence the 105 temperature

@@HallsomeFarm they are littlewhite worm about the size of thread and they don't get no bigger than an a eight of a inch
We are starting to build raised beds to start growing our own vegetables and herbs, but would love to make my own worm castings vs buy them. I have two questions 1) how long can they be left alone if you go on a trip? 2) how do you get the castings?
I leave a month at a time with no problem, I have a video on castings
