The Buddha spoke about the far reaching benefits of regularly practising metta meditation. In the Metta (Mettanisamsa) Sutta: Discourse on Advantages of Loving-kindness, he says: "Monks, eleven advantages are to be expected from the release (deliverance) of heart by familiarizing oneself with thoughts of loving-kindness (metta), by the cultivation of loving-kindness, by constantly increasing these thoughts, by regarding loving-kindness as a vehicle (of expression), and also as something to be treasured, by living in conformity with these thoughts, by putting these ideas into practice, and by establishing them. What are the eleven? 1. One sleeps in comfort. 2. One awakes in comfort. 3. One sees no evil dreams. 4. One is dear to human beings. 5. One is dear to non-human beings. 6. Devas (gods) protect them. 7. Fire, poison, and sword cannot touch them. 8. One's mind can concentrate quickly. 9. One's countenance is serene. 10. One dies without being confused in mind. 11. If one fails to attain arahantship (the highest sanctity) here and now, one will be reborn in the brahma-world. "These eleven advantages, monks, are to be expected from the release of heart by familiarizing oneself with thoughts of loving-kindness, by cultivation of loving-kindness, by constantly increasing these thoughts, by regarding loving-kindness as a vehicle (of expression), and also as something to be treasured, by living in conformity with these thoughts, by putting these ideas into practice and by establishing them."
In this meditation, You helped me become aware of my bewilderment at the many wars, global and personal. Then I became aware of how many hours in a day I go around unconscious of the incorrect thinking I cling to that feed my anger and resentments. When I recognize how much effort it takes me- I no longer wonder that people are at war. They all continually blame each other for wrongdoings, and barely see their own. It’s hard for us to see our own contribution to suffering! We need to wake up- all of us need to wake up. Every day, spend some time in meditation so we can wake up. May we all become fully aware of what is driving our actions, and be honest about it, and find the wisest way to reach others’ hearts.
I just now found this wonderful collection of gems on your page. As I sat and connected with my breath, I realized I’ve been carrying sadness all day. ( I don’t say this to illicit pity or anything ) But I was relieved to realize it - because who knows how long this feeling would have been running in my unconscious if I hadn’t sat down and been reminded to connect with my breath? That this awareness comes so quickly is ..simply magical! I just love sitting with you, thank you for what you’re doing for us. 🙏
