  • Today's video looks at Andross Guile and how Brent Weeks makes him such an interesting anti-hero. The video will explore his philosophy and motivations, as I try to unpick his characterisation in The Burning White.

The green screen worked nicely! In Lightbringer, one of my favorite characters because of all the hell she had to endure, the acting she had to perfect, and all at an age when her emotions are under a magnifying glass, was Teia. She truly made some serious sacrifices for "The Greater Good" ... sacrifices that just continued to pile up. It is quite a rollercoaster for her, especially from her perspective, for instance when she goes to report to Karris about DGavin being on The Golden Mein, and sees her weeping over having to Free Blackguard Gavin due to him breaking his halos. At that point, I think Teia saw her more as "The Glass White" than "The Iron White," of course Teia isn't aware of the intensity of the burdens on Karris, or how freeing Gavin caused her to stop everyone searching for DGavin, forcing her to admit to herself he's dead, & Teia doesn't know about the intricacies of Karris & Dazen's relationship, or the history behind it, she only saw weakness which caused her to haughtily stalk off & report later. Anyway, I'd love to hear your thoughts on Teia & how she heroically keeps her conscience while having to do all kinds of cruel, viscous things, whether it's assassination or experimenting with paryl to the death of old men.
Also, if you've read The First Law trilogy, & I'm nearly.finished with the 3rd book, & when it comes to characters, sometimes it seems like both Orbit published authors had the same professor for character creation & development lol. Its definitely a wild ride 😎
    Thanks again for the video!

I really enjoyed the Teia chapters too, though thought she could have had a better end as she is not really recognised for her service and ends relatively alone. I haven't read first law but it's definitely on my list. I also want to read the mistborn series as I shockingly haven't read any Sanderson (except wheel of time).

Funny you mention that.... I read Mistborn books 1 to 3 right when I read The Night Angel trilogy about a decade ago. After I read Lightbringer at the beginning of the year, I went to recaptains.com to refresh my memory of the first 3 Mistborn books so I'd better enjoy Mistborn books 4, 5, & 6, which take place 340 years after the first trilogy and is referred to as era 2, although the 4th & last era2 book will supposedly be written after Stormlight Archive #5.
I found books 4, 5, & 6 to be an enormous disappointment, especially after Lightbringer. It was so dull in comparison, especially the characters, & it left me feeling like I just jumped off a bus full of Little-Goody-2-Shoes, reading books with perfect flat characters (except Wayne.....maybe), a ridiculous amount of replacement curse words....ugh.
I fled to the best raw, visceral, and gritty fantasy I'd heard of....The First Law. I never thought taking a shower in the metaphorical sewer would be so invigorating! It's not that bad lol, but man after those 3 Mistborn era2 books it was exactly what I needed.
This has nothing to do with the first Mistborn trilogy. That, on the other hand, was a lot of fun to read. Sure, I still think it takes away from all his books a little because of how all his books have replacement curse words, among other things that make all his books feel a bit YA & opaque. Plus I'm older now, 37, 27 when I read the first Mistborn trilogy, and honestly it was the magic system that made me love it at age 27. I don't remember them well enough to speak to that trilogy on the characters, but I'm pretty sure they were in improvement over era2's. I didn't really like Elantris or Warbreaker either lol, which I read soon after the first 3 Mistborn books. I'd definitely state that Weeks & Abercrombie write to a more mature character audience.
Robert Jordan....I never finished it, I read 1 or 2 books after Winter's Heart, might have stopped at Knife of Dreams. Waiting 3 or 4 years for every next book made me feel like I wasn't gonna know what's going on unless I started back at the Eye of the World everytime a new book came out but I never did, and Winter's Heart was so eternally slow, I have a vivid memory of reading over 50 pages of nothing waiting for Perrin to cross 20 feet snow lol.
Well that's my 2 cents lol

@@paulandrews5263 Yeah Perrin's story gets especially slow with him spending like three books trying to get his wife back. Interesting I'll probably only read the first mistborn trilogy for now and also have the first in the gentlemen bastards series on my shelf but afterwards I'll take a look at first law as I have seen it praised quite alot! Thanks for the insight, I appreciate it.

@@tobysaunders No problem....I've read over a thousand fantasy books. Book shelves became insufficient...I just use kindle now. I have a ton of heavy boxes full of books in storage....I got kinda talked into donating a ton of my books to a library, but I made them go back and get what they could back, unfortunately a lot of stuff sold.....that was a nasty guilt trip to play on me, all those books are a part of me.
Anyway, Lies of Locke Lamora? Yea I haven't read those yet either. I'm probably gonna finish Last Argument of Kings, then read Best Served Cold, The Heroes, Red Country, then Sharp ends. I'll wait for Abercrombie to finish the new trilogy beginning with "A Little Hatred." I have "Half a King" by Abercrombie, first book of his Shattered Sea trilogy set in a different world. It & the blade itself were like $3.99 because of the covid19 pandemic. The first book of whatever series he has. Oh, I think its YA but still really good, The Powder Mage books are all $4.99 Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time, & Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth, taught me to wait for the series to be finished before beginning it. I started the Sword of Truth when only book 1 was out..
Oh yea, Perrin was chasing after Faile, I couldn't recall if she died or not. Too many plots going on simultaneously.
Oof don't do it don't do it Paul.....the second I go on Amazon I'm gonna wanna spend like 200$ in books!
I don't know wtf is the deal with all my typos, but my excuse is its 409am and I'm on round the clock painkillers.

I hated him in the blinding knife. But after some time I came to respect him. He's a cruel man but by purpose. He's fanatical. He truly believes the he himself was the new man, the chosen one for Gods plan. It struck me as I read the burning white that he wasn't. His family was. So the single most important aspect to Andross was the single roll of the dice that God played. It felt poetic in a sense.

Okay great video but bro but you really need to do some spoiler warnings. I'm only halfway through the burning white and you almost just spoiled the end of the series. Holy shit. Please work on that in the future!
But for real great video, I'm glad to hear that somebody is as passionate as I am about this incredible series.
I hope to see you make more videos one day, you've got a really good screen presence! 😊
