I used to play since I was 6 years old until I was 19 years in Sweden. Im now 53 and just started to play again here in Europe and I am amazed how this sport has evolved with the equipment. I used to skate a pair of Bauer Supreme Custom 100 in leather that I still have. I was given a pair of used Bauer Supreme Mach from one of my former collegues whos son is now playing in the SHL in Sweden. I have to say I am having a hard time to skate in these carbon skates. I hope I get used to it. What I am also surprised of is back in the 80`s all players had sticky black hockey tape on the sticks, now everyone has white normal tape, why is that? Also very strange to shoot with a featerherligt carbon stick when we used to play solid wooden sticks like the ones you show. The lenght is however the same. Great video!

I battle with this same problem with many of the players I have coached for years. I agree with Jason (even though when I played against him I didn't like him much) get the skills then do what you want with your stick length. The argument that's it is older players that play with shorter sticks doesn't make sense. Look at the greatest in the game today McDavid, Ovi, Sid, MacKinnon, Matthews, all have sticks below their chin by more than a few inches. The next point is the old well I play D so I need a longer stick, well again get the skills then lengthen if you want. Just because A few D in the NHL use a longer stick is a poor reason for a 10 or 12 year old to use it. If you make the NHL no one will question your stick length I guarantee it, until then shorten it and work on your game. And the biggest problem with a long stick is it negatively effects your skating and make younger players skate more upright and with incorrect knee bend and back posture. And in case no one has told you, if you aren't a good skater then there is limited upside for you as a player in the new style of hockey.

If you are 6-2 without skates, which adds roughly 3-4 inches, you are about the right height for 5-11 players in skates. Secondly, you are comparing sticks which are full generations different than modern technology and significantly different flex profiles. Stick length has increased for nearly all players over the last ten years or so but not by that much. The old rule of thumb was nose to chin in socks, which put the stick at chin to collarbone in skates. The current model is, generally, eyes to nose which puts the stick at nose to chin in skates. Players use a much higher top hand position in the modern game to account for the difference in length.

I appreciate the feedback and agree with what you are saying. My point of the video is that too many players (young ones specifically) use too long of a stick for their puck handling abilities. I see too many 10 year olds with a stick cut to their eyes and they can't control the puck. Start shorter, grow your puck skills, and then lengthen.

I play defense and keep mine just as tall as me off or on skates. ButI didn’t start doing that until I started playing hockey again after 15 years this year. I’ve adjusted my entire play style and body movement to play with them like that and I do just fine. But I do bring 4 sticks to every game. 2 defense with 85-120 flex, a middle stick that’s a little shorter, and an offense stick with a lighter flex usually 82-85. I also bring a heel curve, a P28, P29, and a pro Malkin curve or a flatter curve just in case.

If this works for you, then roll with it. However, I have not seen or played with a pro uses different curves or flexes in the same game.

@@upmyhockeywithjasonpodolla8994 ya it’s just something I do. I’ve never seen or heard of anyone else doing it but it does work so that’s why I do it. People thought I was crazy until they literally watched me switch from an 85 flex mid kick P92 to a 85 flex low kick heel curve and then immediately scored.
Usually within the first 5-10 minutes I get a feel for how the other team plays and especially how the goalie reacts to shots and from where. If they’re hardcore corner fighters and slashing a lot I use a stiffer stick. If they’re letting us skate in close and not digging the corners I switch to a lighter flex and usually a low kick or hybrid stick for quicker shots from up close. If the goalie is stopping every well aimed shot from everywhere I bring out the heel curve for quick roofing up close or to shoot wobbling and horizontal pucks to throw them off.
It’s been working and has become a ritual of sorts.

I use a stick that goes up to my nose on skates. I’ve tried to use shorter sticks (around lip height) and I can’t. It doesn’t feel comfortable for me. I can’t shoot or stickhandle with a short stick. Longer stick allows me to get better shots off, and even stickhandling. Also, comparing older sticks to current sticks isn’t a great comparison. Shooting mechanics are way different, and so is technology

If you have found a height that works for you, I applaud it! Having a longer stick is an advantage in a lot of ways (not all ways), and I have no issue with longer sticks. My point is, that MANY players use sticks they can't control. Start with a length that you can handle the puck with precision and use both sides of the blade. Extend length gradually from there.
