Unlock Your Potential: The Power of Goal Setting!
Goal setting is a powerful tool to keep your mind focussed on an outcome, regardless of your current environment. Brandon Convery, former 1st round pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs, reflects on how goal setting made a huge difference for him mentally. Having future goals kept him playin ghte long game with his development, And when I say goals, I don't mean how many points you want to get, I mean what areas are you going to improve and what ares are going to try to excel at.

      @@upmyhockeywithjasonpodolla8994To play hockey with confidence’ could mean a lot of different things to different people. For me, it means not allowing yourself to get pushed around by smaller, faster players, but it could also mean maintaining composure under pressure, making smart plays without hesitation, or trusting your abilities even when the game gets intense. Everyone has their own version of confidence on the ice, whether it’s being physical, staying mentally tough, executing skills at the right moment, calling for the puck, staying calm after a bad shift, taking control of the play when needed, or stepping up to make a game-changing move. It could also mean knowing when to play it safe, backing up your teammates, or staying focused no matter how the score looks. Confidence is about finding that balance between aggression and patience, knowing your role, and embracing every challenge without second-guessing yourself.

    I didn't realize this was Jason Podollan. Can we have Kirk Muller back? Brandon Convery was a huge bust. In this market he was talked up like we had a young 150 point man in the making. All leading to us trading him for....UGH..... Lonny Bohonos. Toronto was constantly going with older players during this time and traded away picks and prospects away like they were growing on trees. The only way Convery was going to make the Leafs was to put up "out of this world" numbers. As soon as that didn't happen it was over.

    • @upmyhockeywithjasonpodolla8994
      @upmyhockeywithjasonpodolla8994 5 дней назад

      You made me laugh regarding Muller - I am sue you are not alone in Leaf land. As you reference, Brandon and I both were involved with the Leafs at time where development was not their sweet spot. You mention Brandon as being a huge bust. I guess it's hard to argue otherwise for both him and I. However I know how great of a player Brandon was, and his AHL (and NHL) stats support that. Compare him with Cory Stillman and Todd Warriner from the same draft class. Look at the numbers they put up... why was Warriner promoted and ultimately kept? Look at teh career Stillman had. Brandon will humbly carry accountability for his role in the "bust" label, but I believe the Leafs are equally if not more to blame. You don't need to look farther than current NHL'ers to see the time NHL teams take for their prosepcts to develop - Byfield, Lafrenniere, Slafkovsky come to mind.

      The first question we'd have to honestly answer is "How good are you currently? If you are "bad" as you say, then it wouldn't make much sense to play selfishly when those around you are better options. I teach 5 Pillars of Confidence and your Competence (your relevative ability) is one of those pillars.

    This could go both ways though. If you asked a selfless leader who is captain material (think Steve Yzerman or Jonathan Toews), they have the humility to never say it is them, even if they might think it privately. Take this in the bigger context of the kid, his personality type, and where he is at in his journey. John Tavares is right though, regardless of talent, there is no excuse for not being the hardest worker in the group.

    1) Move the draft age to 15, it gives the players an additional year to develop and is probably better for their long-term mindset. 2) Soccer teams, both abroad and MLS, have free academies for youth to develop skills (and academics), and that provides a direct pathway to the professional team. I’d like to see NHL teams develop more affordable youth systems, although admittedly the entry draft system doesn’t accommodate a soccer-style advancement to the NHL team at 18 .

    I used to play since I was 6 years old until I was 19 years in Sweden. Im now 53 and just started to play again here in Europe and I am amazed how this sport has evolved with the equipment. I used to skate a pair of Bauer Supreme Custom 100 in leather that I still have. I was given a pair of used Bauer Supreme Mach from one of my former collegues whos son is now playing in the SHL in Sweden. I have to say I am having a hard time to skate in these carbon skates. I hope I get used to it. What I am also surprised of is back in the 80`s all players had sticky black hockey tape on the sticks, now everyone has white normal tape, why is that? Also very strange to shoot with a featerherligt carbon stick when we used to play solid wooden sticks like the ones you show. The lenght is however the same. Great video!

AAA is also just a name now. A name meant to grab cash and charge another few thousand for development. Teams dont get filled and they start adding learn to skates on the team. Coaching on AAA starting to look suspect these days.

There are abviously tons of dynamics and layers to each scenario, but this is the basic question parents have to ask themselves.

This isn't the NHL and 99% of the kids go nowhere but beer league. Leading a bunch of learn to skates beats warming the bench and being bullied in some top tier team. Imagine being the bottom feeder on a top team, everyone on the bench knows you are the bottom feeding kid. I play defense and keep mine just as tall as me off or on skates. ButI didn’t start doing that until I started playing hockey again after 15 years this year. I’ve adjusted my entire play style and body movement to play with them like that and I do just fine. But I do bring 4 sticks to every game. 2 defense with 85-120 flex, a middle stick that’s a little shorter, and an offense stick with a lighter flex usually 82-85. I also bring a heel curve, a P28, P29, and a pro Malkin curve or a flatter curve just in case.

    • @ArchieCrypto

      @@upmyhockeywithjasonpodolla8994 ya it’s just something I do. I’ve never seen or heard of anyone else doing it but it does work so that’s why I do it. People thought I was crazy until they literally watched me switch from an 85 flex mid kick P92 to a 85 flex low kick heel curve and then immediately scored. Usually within the first 5-10 minutes I get a feel for how the other team plays and especially how the goalie reacts to shots and from where. If they’re hardcore corner fighters and slashing a lot I use a stiffer stick. If they’re letting us skate in close and not digging the corners I switch to a lighter flex and usually a low kick or hybrid stick for quicker shots from up close. If the goalie is stopping every well aimed shot from everywhere I bring out the heel curve for quick roofing up close or to shoot wobbling and horizontal pucks to throw them off. It’s been working and has become a ritual of sorts.

    Great conversation. Thank you for this! Eric is definitely my all time favorite player. Really enjoyed watching him in Pittsburgh. He always seemed humble and genuine and had a wonderful ability to laugh at himself.

    I've been around youth hockey for eight years now as my daughter started at six. I have noticed the poison that seeps into these kids when they constantly hear "get it out!" (of the zone) from parents and coaches. I noticed, ESPECIALLY at this level, these plays are simply turnovers or desperation flings or tips that sometimes don't even clear the zone and might as well be assists in the score sheet for the opponent. I'm getting more involved in the coaching now and telling my kids i want them to have the puck, want the puck, possess the puck and not to be afraid. Because if they never even try it on ice they can never possibly learn how. It's a mindset change for the coaches who aren't thinking long term. But it's telling that this video is so sorely needed. And it's great to learn about this story. I will be sharing it with the kids.

      Great approach with your coaching. Personally I am the same way - I encourage the defense to make plays with the puck, not get rid of the puck or treat it like a problem. Keep up the good work!
