This is a phenomenal version of this song. I wish this was available on iTunes or something. These are some of the greatest bluegrass players ever. Jerry Douglas is the greatest dobro player ever.
Whitehouse Blues was actually written by Charlie Poole from Eden, N C . First banjo player to make recording way before 1927. Unfortunately he never received a lot of credit for his work.
Close enough, but my reason for asking XLIVwhodat is that I believe that you can't play like TR( Maybe not even close) and must really envy Tony. I have NEVER heard anyone say they don't like Tony!!!
Aliens visited during this concert and realized the hicks in the boondocks knew more about music than they did so they peaced out. Is the HD version of this concert available anywhere?
OK, Bob Lackey, I took you up on your offer. The Flatt and Scruggs version DOES smoke white hot, but comparing the tunes is like apples and oranges, well, OK, apples and a slightly different kind of... apples. Instrumentation is different and the feel is slightly different--both tunes rage off the rails, but one isn't better'n the other.
Well I saw a version of this at Merlefest 96 or 97 on the old Hillside Stage. Sam was late and ran straight to the mic and said timing, timing, timing. By the next song he had Tony's pantlegs rolled up to his knees. That lineup was Tony, Sam, Victor Wooten, Futureman playing a box, stuart Duncan on fiddle, maybe Pete Wernick on Banjo(definitely not Bela) and maybe Jerry..I have the tape hiding somewhere. Great stuff. Went to Merlefest 96-2000. I am blessed..
@jamiedaley I hate to say it, but to me, the flatt and scruggs version smokes this version. Type in "whitehouse blues flatt and scruggs" and take a listen. Someone did a slide show for the video but musically it smokes this version and I think Tony, Sam and Bela would admit that. They are all big Flatt, Scruggs, Monroe, Reno, Smiley, Stanley brothers fans anyway.
A band with literally 5 guys who are the genre’s GOATs on their given instrument. It doesn’t get any better than that.
FACTS
Wow these guys are just incredible musicians RIP. TONY RICE
God bless Tony Rice (RIP), Mark O'Connor, Sam Bush and All the musicians involved.I'm an italian bluegrass fan, from Genova.
I mean, come on. This is a supergroup of all supergroups. These guys melt some picks on this tune. Wow.
these guys are such good listeners - Tony was low in the mix, but they all immediately came down in volume to accommodate.
Tony rice is the MAN! The guitar at this speed is a killer and he just destroys it!
This will go down as one of all time best versions of this song ever. Super Group!
This is a phenomenal version of this song. I wish this was available on iTunes or something. These are some of the greatest bluegrass players ever. Jerry Douglas is the greatest dobro player ever.

Some of the best musicians who ever lived. Dayum.
Whitehouse Blues was actually written by Charlie Poole from Eden, N C . First banjo player to make recording way before 1927. Unfortunately he never received a lot of credit for his work.
Great song by an incredible bunch of musicians,,,and that is very understated.
I don’t know who in the world put a thumbs down on this video but they need their head examined! Wow!
Those thumbs down people were probably looking for cocaine rap or something similar, me thinks.....
Unbelievable, thank you Tony and crew!! Bluegrass is truth.
I don't know Who's the fastest? Bela, Jerry, Sam, Tony or Mark? They're all flipping fantastic! What a song!!
Some of my favorite bluegrass guys, in their prime!
Never seen strings smoke like that. These guys on 🔥
I at this show back in '92. What a great festival.
Figured it was pretty old by the looks of O'Connor and Fleck. But Sam Bush never ages for some reason.

Aliens visited during this concert and realized the hicks in the boondocks knew more about music than they did so they peaced out.

You are correct. Bill Monroe played it for decades and brought it into bluegrass but it is Poole's song

Can you play like Tony?

He means Charlie Poole, right? Or am I missing something?
That's definitely Merlefest, looks early 1990's era to me.
Luv 2:34 - 3:06
@XLIVwhodat
Do you play guitar?
@tele2000 I know, and what solos too!
Where is Jerry Duglas?
As usual Tony destroys his break
looks like merlefest c. mid-1990s. can anyone confirm or deny?
After nine years with no answer apparently not. LOL I can state that is Merlefest stage for sure, sometime between 1991 and 1995.

Winston Tucker lol
@XLIVwhodat weird erratic solos.????????????????
Don't think Sam ever got his due as a singer.
@jamiedaley I hate to say it, but to me, the flatt and scruggs version smokes this version. Type in "whitehouse blues flatt and scruggs" and take a listen. Was this uploaded at like 2x speed or something or just cocaine
Probably a little of both but when these guys went on stage they were straight as an arrow
my mom asked me the same question once, and she shook her head in disbelief when I said "No they can pick that fast"
smokes? i dont know about smokes it..sam bush might know something bout that. allz these boys r missin is a juice harp.
The early 20th Century songwriters, by the way, were glad McKinley was dead. They were all Bryan supporters.
THis is just too ridiculous.
NO. Bluegrass guitar giant, not country.
@bluegrassjtb yes
@unclebobunclebob 3:40
@bluegrassjtb Can you?
@herringbone28 I know plenty of guitarists who can improv without goin into some offbeat jazzy rambling.
Don't get me wrong I love bluegrass but i hate the way Tony does those weird erratic solos.
