I remember in 2013 I registered for my 2nd year at my uni, Nelson Mandela University, online, using my Blackberry. It took me maybe 15 to 20 minutes and I was done. I just had to go and fetch my registration documents, timetable , diary and all that on campus, which also didn't take long.

In university the lectures are supposed to help you transition from being a teen or child into adulthood. Calling them by their names helps you learn that you're a young adult now, not a child. The nature of the relationship must not be parental.
This is so important. It's easier to relate with and learn from people who do not demand unreasonable respect from you, and help you see yourself as a member of the larger society. Thanks for engaging 👍

As a Caribbean national currently studying in the US for post grad I think it's important people see what education around the world is like if it's even 1 semester! This opens your vision and shows you what changes you need to make at home

But we always fight with management at the beginning of every year ....but I think we have more positive stuff than negative ..also in SA education is almost free given that u South African , qualify to study and household income is less than R350k than u will receive free education... Health care is free , the are social grants , disability grants , old ppl also get free grants , the are free RDP houses for the less fortunate ....the list goes on and on

Overall, the system here is great (not flawless) though and I hope other African countries can emulate the good parts. Thanks for watching 🤗

Left me reminiscing about wayyyy back. Today it is like 10 years into my retirement after teaching ❤️

All what you said has been normal in SA I was at the university of the North from 1977 for 5 years.. base degree plus honors. All what we did was pay fees and get ALL for free. Today it's even better NSFAS gas kicked in

Great video and I wish you success on your educational and professional journey. Personally I hope you stay in SA. Any nation would be fortunate to have people like yourself in them.
Of all the things SA should be proud of their public university system is probably their crown jewel.
No offense to other African nations but according to international league tables South Africa has the best public university system. There are something like 25k universities in the world. About 4k are actively ranked and all of SA’s universities seem to be in the top half of that. Including what they call (don’t know if they still use this term) “technikons”. Many of them are in the top 500 and about three or four are in the 200 or 300.
As The Times Higher Education noted regarding South Africa, it punches well above its weight compared to the other BRICS (Brazil Russia China South Africa). It’s much smaller but it’s university system is highly competitive internationally.

At UKZN, Now it is just a few seconds, once you have financially cleared you just log in with your valid credentials and then wait for approval which takes a few mins/hours depending on the volume of approval requests.

Nice Video Oyinkan, I actually went to university of Ibadan, I relocated to South Africa as a student as well. But in my university in SA, Tshwane University of Technology, we don't call them our lecturer by their names 😂😂😂.
But everything else you said about university of Ibadan are things I can totally relate with 😁.

I appreciate the truth in the video but there is a sense in which as Africans we feel powerless as citizens....it's actually painful to hear a fellow African being so shocked by another country...it is something that we should all as Africans work on....what about having a body that acts as an Authority on Standards (Something like ISO) but for everything like how a University building should be structured and taxi overloading, etc.
Thanks for this. Nice to hear some good news. Except the part about the way some students here dress. That's not good news I think. I think South Africa is a bit similar to countries like the US and Australia in terms of culture, meaning that we have a fairly non-traditional culture, which has both positive and negative elements.

I think it goes with freedom of expression. In taxi ranks, people get shamed for expressing themselves through dress code. Personally I like seeing young people in bum shorts cause there comes a time when you as person prohibit yourself from dressing a certain way. Young people should enjoy themselves in their youth.
By the way you're not the first to raise the dress code issue, one Nigerian lady was shocked that school uniforms are above the knees, let alone very short 🤣🤣🤣 but it's always been like that. Back in the 90s my teachers asked me to tailor my uniform, taken from big sis, cause it was too big and long for me. But it was my final year in higher primary, and it was towards final exam time, so I just continued like that and left the school

Is the best, but apply to 3 or 4 university to increase your chances. I will recommend Wits, Capetown and UKZN
I never registered manually and I am on my third year at the University of Limpopo. Registration is less than ten minutes for me.

South Africa is very different from the whole of Africa but nothing is mentioned about that, all you hear is negativity even from the very South Africans which is a shame, my sister. My opinion my sister is that we should be patriotic about our own countries that is the foundation of everything. If you look at the South Africans that are outside of the country compared to other African countries it is a shame some do not even want to associate themselves with their mother countries like Zimbabweans and Nigerians. Some here in Britain even call themselves British, I am British, stupidity at its highest level how can you be European when you are black born in Africa. Let us learn as blacks to first love ourselves and be proud of who we are and then we will be able to love other black people and where we come from. God Bless.

The culture shock is that 61 years after Nigeria became independent; they cannot and will never be able to have the infrastructure to host an international event such as the FIFA world cup or the Rugby world cup - that one of the high level shock that Nigerians should register in their minds instead of coming on RUclips and going on about 'culture shock'; also look up what 'shocking' means in the English dictionary - causing indignation or disgust; offensive; so why are the amazing experiences causing you offence? Which begs the question, were you invited to South Africa or did you come of your on accord and why did you leave Nigeria which so impoverished and yet there is so much oil and revenues are embezzled part of your cultural norm. If you are that shocked, go back home!
I don’t think your comments are well placed. She is referring to the academic field which from time to time hardly recognize border limitation as research require collaboration. I’m mysel UKZN alumni and really enjoyed my time with other international student from the continent. This should help us realize and build on what we have and find way to uplift other African nations. Nigeria contributed millions to our liberation during the hard times through their taxations.

The 2020/2021 federal budget of the nation of Nigeria was $30 Billion, while South Africa’s education budget for 2020/2021 was $26 Billion, so you’re comparing apples and bananas here.
And South African government budget is $110 billion
For a nation with Nigeria‘a population that is truly shocking. Though it does explain a lot regarding how terrible the stats are on the nation.
Not gonna lie I thought it was just graft and poor administration. Both of which again still shocks me.
Curious though, why don’t African nations redraw their borders and create more cohesive nations? With the exception of maybe Ethiopia and possibly Egypt every other nation state is an artificial creation of some former European power. Surely people recognize that that’s part of the decades long dysfunction of pretty much the whole continent.

How is this annoying? Throughout RUclips you have vloggers talking about the same thing regarding various countries and the differences. To me it’s one of the more positive (even when the video is negative) things on the platform. You learn a lot. How others see your country. The things that seem normal to you but wacky to someone from outside. I love these types of videos. These days I particularly enjoy seeing people visiting or new to South Africa and Namibia.
