Sick how you transform these synths just with processing them. I always thought that these type of synths were made with like some weird expensive modular gear.
Good ideas always beat expensive gear. You can buy the most expensive modular rack in the universe and still not be capable of producing interesting sounds :)
You can tell how much Yan loves music by how he just gives these hard earned secrets away. A true gentleman and a scholar. Thank you for sharing your ideas!
@@jimd7097 you can just use any thirdparty frequency shifter plugin to replicate the effect. You might check Valhalla DSP Freq Echo is free and it does the job !
Im speechless with the quality of this content. Your commitment to a certain aesthetic is very inspiring. I made a track on top of one of the patterns, and I would feel guilty not stating that it is a remix from your work 😅
This is gold, recognized so many techno elements where I had no clue at all how they were made. Thank you very much, looking forward for more videos like this :)
so much this, stuff that would have taken me forever to unlock through experimentation. it is just stuff that is not as intuitive as "typical" or fundamental subtractive synthesis sound design.
Very nice! I was half expecting this to be “Pattern 1: doof doof; pattern 2: oonst oonst; pattern 3: boots-and-cats” etc, but this is really inspiring for taking simple patterns in all sorts of sonically rich directions.
Thank You Yan Cook. This Indeed Is Helping Me out. I got more (Useful instruction) from this with messing around with it - inside of a single day than I would have trying to figure out how to apply Live's effects (as demonstrated here) in a Month... I wish I'd found this Video and Channel at LEAST 6 months before Today!
Firstly these are great! Secondly, just curious, do you only use live native devices for your own productions or is just for the purpose of these excellent tutorials?
For the second pattern, I usually did the same concept differently, with some time up to five notes. But try to randomize the velocity, and you will be chocked with the result
Pure gold. Superb quality content :) Like someone said - the generosity of this person is out of this world. MAD PROPS , YAN, you're THE MAN. Keep it up, your work is brilliant.
Thank you so much for this Yan, this year I started producing and I have been taking weekly lessons for a few weeks now so this really inspires me to keep working on new projects. You're amazing!
This is purely incredible. Do you use any particular equipment or it this all done through software? I'm assuming that this is all done via Ableton - correct?
Hi Yan, I remember you mentioned using a tiny Sennheiser headset most of the time. How do you manage to trust how your kicks will sound in a big sound system? I understand samples might be easier to trust, but when synthesizing the kicks themselves (like with a Syntakt), how do you do it? :) Thanks in advance
@@TheRoc35 From experience, I know how I want my kicks to sound, in headphones and monitors, so I just trust my ears :) But of course, if I have a chance to check my new tracks on a big sound in a club, I always do that.
uff this is great! very interesting, thanks for that. please show more of those patterns and what you can do with them. its very helpful for recreating and coming up with something own and getting to know the instruments.
Damn I was just so hyped about producing oldschool warehouse house music and now I see this. 😍 What am I going to do now? Thanks for sharing. Subscribed.
is that ping pong effect a default effect within any version of ableton/m4L or is it something else you bought/imported?? I've looked for it so many times man, I can never find the fucking thing... I know its just essentially a panning/delay effect but it seems to make that sort of constantly clean bouncing effect a lot simpler, especially on your videos because anything atmospheric or spacey you always use it
In technique number 3, why does placing the frequency shifter after the distortion sound so much different then just changing the note that the oscillator is playing? Since that is essentially all a frequency shift is doing. Or maybe the frequency shifter is doing more?
Great stuff! Interesting to see that you have a lot of go to values ready for different patches. The frequency shifter for the last patch doesn't work the same for me, I get percentages up to 50% instead of values, prolly a difference in versions of Ableton.
ty! I think old ideas should be revealed so producers were forced to invent something new. Beginners still won't be able to recreate aesthetics of the genre.
@@YanCook yeah that's what I figured. I've seen it in other tutorials as well and it can be disappointing for us newbies because it makes it seem like there's some prior knowledge that's needed to do sound design that's not being shown. Still love the content though
@@YanCook Thanks for the absolute cracking lesson mate. Are you setting the frequency of the frequency shifter to a value that keeps it in key with your track? or just doing it to taste?
Very nice! What is the LFO Midi on the 2nd one and what is it doing to the midi exactly? Is that Max for Live plugin? Also, how do you make that drum sound prior to the bass kick? Is it just THE KICK filtering out the low frequency and then dropping it in or are they two separate items? Thanks!
The generosity of this man leaves me out of words
some would say... speechless?
I was wondering how to thank him for these videos but you said it the best!

Pattern #5 is a work of art
Basically every track i start now uses at least a dozen elements from this channel's videos. Yan Cook is godlike. pattern two gave me shivers.

I have been listening the "pattern 4" sound in techno for years. Finally I found how to make it. Thank you !!

One thing I like about my Native instruments stuff is you can actually turn the knobs on all the different effects rather than using a mouse.
Thanks man, this helped so much. I'm just using a TR8 and an SH01a. LOVING it!
Might be the best video I saw on RUclips

Great vid, love the use of Freq Shifter. That and phase/flanger effects seem to be a big ingredient in your sound palette. Love it.
Welp now it's going to take a whole set of 2 generations to reinvent something like this.
It's basically the whole techno scene summed in a video.
Great tutorials, just one question.. When you arrange a track are you leaving the LFO’s on or are you ‘playing’ the automations and recording it?
I use both.
