I used to live in Basildon until 2004 . I lived there for 15 years . Got some good and bad memories of the place . I used to work at the old Sainsbury's now Asda and pms . Dont miss the place one bit ..
That was a serene trip around Basildon, on a nice day. It's not the Basildon I remember from the 90s, but could be great again with a makeover which respects the original design. Spruce up everything. No idea about the empty shops, though. People have to want to open businesses.
The council do try to invigorate Basildon but shopping habits have changed and that’s a lot of shops to fill. Bringing the college down was a good idea but building so many flats may not be wise,unless planning is done well. Basildon has lots of potential. I hope it works out.

Looks ok on a nice day with the sun shining, the town has been hit hard by many retailers going bust many having stores in the town Wilko , Debenhams, BHS, Top Shop, Laura Ashley, Maplin, Toys r us, Mothercare and shopping habits have changed with all the online retailers. Eastgate shopping centre is ok but can't compete with Lakeside In the 70s and 80s Basildon was the place to shop, those days are long gone, like many high streets in the UK crime and yob culture have taken over, Basildon has its problems but no worse than anywhere else.
What happened to marks and sparks , to let??? Co op is now Primark , where the hell is Dixon's ?? And Godfrey's, and the markets moved when did the phone number go from 0268 to 01268 , where's top man , top girl , McDonald's , kfc, the cheap shop, etc etc yup I'm old lol, used to work at the music store in Eastgate , what happened to dels music ? And honkytonk in Southend ??? I miss the hamsters and the Phil hilbourne group omg

At 4.30 many shops seen closed. This is not bad. The local council is planning to demolish the entire block and re-develop the site..
