I knew Croydon a long, long time ago when there were "proper" trams - double-deck ones painted red and cream. As a child, I hated the place, being dragged round Grants, Allders and worst of all, Kennards. Used to have lunch and tea in the last of these at first but then at Wilson's, which used to have a coffee roasting machine behind the front window. If we had a table by a window, I could watch the trams going from twin tacks to a single one and vice versa where they went to and from North End to the High Street - routes 16, 18 and the local 42. Living at Tadworth, we had to get to Croydon by train (electric) but if I was fortunate, I'd see a steam-hauled one, usually going to or from Tunbridge Wells. I most certainly wouldn't recognise Croydon nowadays but maybe the Alms House and Surrey 10:26 Street.
That clock of Greggs was once a shop called Kookai. Shops like Debenhams, British Home Sores, C&A, Allders, Woolworths, Morgan De Toi and plenty others were stand out shops on Croydon High Street
I grew up in Croydon and now live in Toironto Canada. I was here for my father's funeral in September. It's changed, but not for the best unfortunatly. They need to invest a lot of money, improve the infrastructure and clean up the streets. Michael
Thank you for this. I left Croydon some years ago 2009) & some parts look exactly the same & some bit have vastly changed.

Welcome to Croydon, prepare to be mugged or worse...
Haha :)
It's got a bad reputation for that want to vacate it for years.
After 9pm vey dangerous. aggressive blacks. unfriendly place. Glad I left after living there for over 40 years and having businesses. Don't miss it.
I lived in Croydon many many years ago, close to E. Croydon. Do not understand mgs916 response as it looks so very much than 40 years ago!
