Something I missed on my first viewing was that there's a moment in Jo's memories we see twice: eating diner pie. In the blue light of him thinking he's a failure, eating pie at a diner is a sad, lonely sight. But when he contemplates his life later, we see the same moment and he is savoring that pie, the pie is delicious and he is enjoying a moment of joy. It says a lot about how one's current emotional state impacts the recollection of things and can warp them from reality.

Kinda like how "Inside Out" a memory suddenly becomes sad because of the changes in life. What once was a happy memory now becomes sad because your not in the same place or you've lost the friends within it

    • @acslater017
      @acslater017 9 дней назад +1

As a serious mindfulness practitioner, I would take it one step further. Not only does our emotional state color our recollection, but our direct experience of it as well. Our frame of mind determines whether we savor something or distractedly slog through it. A helpful framework I apply is to realize that everything we do will one day be the last time we do it - that pecan pie might be the last pecan pie this conscious system ever gets to experience.
Everything is impermanent. There will come a day when our children, will no longer ask to be read a story. Our bodies will get frail and we won’t be abld to make our own hot shower. Either we live to see our friends pass or we go first. How grateful would we be, like Joe, to time travel back to this moment and have a second chance at savoring it?

You'd probably like Netflix's "Tick, tick, BOOM!" message then. That movie moved me, inspired me and made me cry my eyes out.

I enjoyed this movie when I first saw it. Over the next few days though, I kept thinking about it and thinking about it and now it’s in my Top 10. Also that song at the piano, “Epiphany”, has become my meditation song whenever I need to calm down.
The purpose of life is life.
Also, in my faith, we believe in a life before birth, so it was really cool to see a story that illustrated that concept

  •  23 дня назад +9

I really liked this movie. When it came out I was in a bad moment of my life and my interpretation of the movie might not be exactly the one they intended because it's not that I had an issue with lacking purpose or a "spark" but with feeling life was worth living. So I ended up relating to 22 so much, that apathy and that "don't care anymore" attitude were things I was struggling with and watching this movie helped me remember how important the little things in life are. Feeling the breeze, talking to people, just enjoying those moments that create memories even if only for yourself. I am glad you reacted to this movie!

    • @sassylittleprophet

The first time I saw this movie, I was also in a bad place. I had been so consumed by what I thought my purpose was that I had gotten burned out and was becoming apathetic to life, because at the time I thought, "what's the point if I can't be a musician and actor?"
This movie made me realize that just regular old living is enough to be happy. I think often we think of accomplishing our dreams as the thing that will ultimately make us happy, but we should never let our dreams get in the way of us being happy.

This is such an overlooked Pixar movie. And Jesus Christ, the movie is so freaking real.
There are so many things I can praise about this movie.
The fact that they had to recreate an animation technique specifically for how fingers move across keys on the piano,
This is the first Pixar movie where it feels like it is targeted at adults. At least in my own personal perception.
It has so many ridiculously real moments. The clash between Joe and his mother before she hands him his dad’s suit was so incredibly done. And also the dialogue-free “epiphany” scene where Joe realizes that small moments in life is a reason it is worth living. And that BEAUTIFUL Oscar winning score.
They also portray the relationship with humans and music so freaking accurately. I’ve been in the zone with music before, and having it visualized so well in an animated movie was so satisfying to see.
But most of all, Joes struggle when he says “I’m just afraid that if I had died today, that my life would have amounted to nothing” I NEVER fail to break down in tears. Cause I’ve been exactly where Joe was. Thinking that I need to do big things to enjoy and be satisfied in life, when that is far from the truth.
In terms of quality it’s definitely not the most consistently good as most other Pixar movies, but it has arguably some of the best moments in any Pixar movie. In my opinion.

  • @EChacon

This film is hands down Pixar’s most beautiful and impactful films and I really love and appreciate the message that the film and director Pete Docter conveys on the importance on valuing and enjoying life around you which is what Joe and soul 22, especially the former experienced and learned throughout the film.
My favorite moments were the scene when 22 in Joe’s body asked the Barber on why he ended up taking this job as a Barber over a veterinarian which was the film's turning point for Joe to realize on appreciating life around you and being happy with what you love doing. Another was when Joe was looking at the various items that 22 in Joe’s body collected from such as the seed, the lollipop and the various scenes of Joe’s life with the music playing had me in emotional tears both of joy and sadness.🥲

I have a theory about 22. She came so CLOSE to getting her Earth Pass before she met Joe. You notice any time we see her 'living space', the spot she likes to hide out in and call her own, it's covered in a ton of stuff, with an entire wall of mentor badges. She'd almost found her spark, her passion: collecting. But it wasn't collecting THINGS that filled out that Pass... It was collecting *MEMORIES.* Specifically life experiences. She went about that day fully in the moment, seeing and smelling and hearing and FEELING; doing everything to the fullest. And then she sits, and recounts those experiences later, before she puts her foot down and states that she's 'in the chair'. And not 2 minutes later, they're back at the You Seminar, and her Pass is complete.
Which is why it broke my heart to see where they sent her. We've all seen a globe, and it's not difficult to track her trajectory. I don't think she'll be able to indulge in her passion much unless she's able to leave.
As a side note, I love the differences they explore in Passion vs Purpose here. Joe Gardner's Spark, his passion, was ABSOLUTELY Jazz and music as a whole. But it wasn't his purpose. We actually see his purpose in the movie, through Curly; it was Teaching. He could reach inside the students that felt the connection to what he was teaching, and nourish that passion, fan it into a full fire for everyone else to see. Curly went on to join a high-level band. Connie may one day be in a world-renowned Philharmonic or become a single artist. Joe's purpose was to do exactly what he did with 22 flying to Earth: plant the seed and take them as far as he could before letting go so they could fly on their own.

Aside from "appreciating the small things", what hits me about this movie is the validation of being an average "Joe" (pun very likely intended) and letting it stay that way. We are always taught about dreams, goals, improvement and making the most out of our lives and while that is all good to grow and be better, that is a LOT of pressure to do ALL the time. We talk about rest, but only so that we can get back to the grind and as 22 points out, there is fear of messing up. Choosing the wrong thing, wasting the time you have and that if you aren't doing something productive or amazing, you are failing. But the "regular old" stuff that 22 liked about life was shown to be amazing in its own way when it's so undervalued by us. Eating pizza, chatting with people you normally don't and watching the wind blow are such simple things, but can mean more than you think looking back. You aren't obligated to have a purpose or achieve something great to live. It's not always being lazy, sometimes it's just living life and that has really comforted me as I've gotten older, still with no passions in life and thought "am I wasting my life living it wrong?"

The idea of being so obsessed with something that you lose what's really important. That the simple life may not be some grand adventure or a ground breaking achievement, but there's nothing wrong with that and it is worth far more than people give it credit for. As Russell says "the boring stuff are the things I remember the most" and what may seem boring can be something you'll cherish forever, just as much as playing music on a stage, if not more.

Just like her I can really appreciate the little moments in life, I just sometimes have to "wake up" to do so. The only difference is that my fear of life comes from experience, I didn't always have it while 22s fear comes from inexperience and in my case it's somewhat grounded in reality.
This movie is really great and I think Joe and 22 work great together as characters, because they are kind of opposites of each other, but they both need to come to the understanding what life really means over the course of the movie. It's brilliant

I absolutely love this movie. Really helped me see things clearly about my own life. Jamie Foxx absolutely killed this role. Another Pixar movie worth checking out is Onward. It didnt do well at the box office since it was released around covid i think, but, its an awesome movie. Love your reactions, and keep doing you man

Well 16:17 cats and all animals go straight to heaven when they die .
Cats definitely are misunderstood and deserve a lot of love they are underappreciated, dogs have it better

Pixar movies have always had messages that are great for both kids and adults, quintessential family movies but Soul feels like a movie much more aimed at adults and how we don't need to have everything figured out and learn to appreciate life for the journey that it is with its ups and downs as a larger continually evolving narrative. We're the authors of our own story.

This movie actually made me cry, believe it or not. But I relate to Joe, so much. Not as an artist but as a person who looks at life as an objective having one sole reason to live.

Pretty sure my spark is being a Mexican in south Texas listening to an Australian bid me a g'day and call me a marshmallow.
Hahaha but on a serious note, this movie snapped me out of one of the worst bouts of depressions I'd ever had before. I felt like a total bum at that point in my life. I was sleeping in the spare bedroom of my mom's house, my two younger siblings and I didn't spend much time together since they were typically holed up in their rooms on social media, I had a job I completely dreaded, I was beating myself up for dropping out of college yet doing nothing about it, I was at my heaviest weight... it was just an awful time for me man.
I believe this movie was the very first that was released straight to Disney+ without premiering in theater during covid (or second, I think live action Mulan was the first [do not recommend {meta}]). One night, while my mom and siblings were all in their rooms and I grew so anxious from just being in bed for days straight just crying and doing nothing, I figured I'd just lounge in the living room and try a new movie out. Shake things up for my mind and nervous system. Can't remember my exact thought process but I decided on Soul.
By the end of the film, I was so overcome with the profound realization that I'd been so needlessly stressing out over all these same things- finding my "grand purpose" in life and fulfilling it- that I'd unknowingly robbed myself of so many moments of joy and tuning into my blessings. It was always that simple. I was so moved and inspired that I literally watched it a second time on the spot. I bawled my eyes out for hours.
That very night, I cleaned my room, hula-hooped & danced (while still sobbing) in the garage to my favorite music, and started looking for a different job. That was some time ago, but I still feel that same spark in my soul watching this movie today. Like Joe, my spark is also music performance. I'm a saxophonist, pianist, vocalist, guitarist and flute player. I'm now living in my own apartment which I've struggled to but have succeeded in keeping tidy, I'm enrolled full-time in university pursuing a degree in music therapy, and I'm at a stable and relevant job as a psychiatric patient caretaker. I'm even preparing to start a reaction channel of my own. You are definitely one of my favorite reactors. Thank you for putting yourself out there for people like me to have a space that we enjoy and resonate with ✨

interesting thing about this film, the title NEVER showed up after Disney Presents while Joe's soul was falling through limbo. It didn't pop up until the very end.

I wanted to propose another old DreamWorks that's in the same category that Prince of Egypt, it's Joseph king of dreams, in it there is this song that I truly really like because it has so much meaning and it's relatable, Its called "You know better than I", If you have time look it up :).
    Have a nice day Oscar
