Thanks for this video. I'm an emergency department nurse, but have always had a special interest in neurology.

Working at a rehab Center (mainly a nursing home but a lot of people stay there until they pass) a lot of people have these diseases. and also a lot have dementia. it's really sad having to see people suffer and watch them progressively worse and eventual die. it's extremely sad. but a lot of them that still can walk around still go to the dinning room for meals and go to activities. they so have a quality life. it doesn't mean they can't enjoy life anymore. the people that can't function anymore by themselves is why they live there. we care for them so their families don't have to. a lot of them are incontinent and most people can't be with their family 24/7. but they still see them. I've seen people who are EXTREMELY confused recognize their family. yes is sad but they are still people. there's lots of people that work in facilities like mine and interact with them. they can't help their diagnosis and many don't know they care the disease before they have children. but all we can do is care for them. we can't just "get rid" of them!!?! they are people too! they too deserve the best care possible!

7:43 My classmate used to call Tardive Dystonia with opistotonic posturing a "maestro dystonia" or "conductor posturing", referring to how these movements somewhat resemble those of a musical master conducting the orchestra.

i still don't understand the difference between dystonia and chorea... can someone help?

  • @johnholward754
    @johnholward754 11 лет назад

They're both disorders of movement, but seem to have different underline causes: chorea involved reduced function of the indirect pathway (putamen to GPi), dystonia involves increased function of the direct pathway relative to the indirect pathway. Not the only distinction, but illustrates that they can be defined differently based on pathogenesis. Here is the source: J Neurol Neurosurg Psychiatry 1998;65:436-445 doi:10.1136/jnnp.65.4.436

Anon we have movement disorders not mental disorders. Many things can make life difficult but many more make it worth living.

there are several treatment options for each specific disorder. though not everyone will respond in the same ways. some may not even respond at all. movement disorders that are severe or are manifested at a young age may be candidates for deep brain stimulation for disorders such as dystonia, parkinson's, tic and myoclonic disorders.

It just kills me that the young man at 7:50 developed TD after physicians were trying to treat his hyper activity as a kid. Wow.

Are benzodiazapines ever used to treat these people? Like klonopin/clonazapam or xanax/alprolazam? I'm just wondering, they loosen your muscles and help with dyspaghia. From someone I know that is being treated for dsypaghia. When you can't swallow, then they take benzos they have barely any problems compared to not taking them. Is this true? Or is every case different type situation?

yes, they can be used in some cases because of their anti-convulsive properties.

I respect your opinion we all have a right to express our views; however, patients who do use medical marihuana due to serious conditions such as cancer should not be classified as a pothead. For chronic debilitating diseases marihuana is a plant without side effects where ever pill has a problem.

Sweet mother of God. If this was me, I'd ask to be put out of my misery. There is no quality of life to be had in this condition. People with a family history of Huntington's who knowingly have children are the most selfish people on earth. It should be illegal, full stop.

Anon Girl That's what the nazis said when they gassed people with movement disorders, that they cannot have quality of life! I disagree.

FinnHallqvist Ok true but why would you have that disease and then have children who then have it also. Who would think that is a good idea?

I can easily see myself committing suicide if I had some of the diseases here presented, such as the very last one. I cannot begin to imagine how horrible their lives must be. Thank you, Ed Zerati, for this eye-opening video on the great luck the neurologically normal have!

Ingesting marijuana is much safer than smoking.
However, many make a classical error assuming marijuana is more likely to cause lung cancer than cigarettes.
    1. very few smoke equivalent amount of marijuana daily compared to cigarettes. Cig. pack is 20-25g (!) Most of my clients smoke 3 g or less of plant matter daily (7-8 times less).
2.Water pipes lower, vaporizers eliminate tar content.
    3. M. smoke irritates mucosa FAR LESS.
BTW marijuana was shown to repair glia & reverse glioma
    ;-)
