Compost Power is an initiative that makes composting more accessible by installing sites at public housing locations and in underserved neighborhoods.
'It's about just giving power to the people,' says Domingo Morales, the founder of Compost Power.
Compost Power aims not only to reduce waste going to landfills and generating methane emissions, but to create a resource for people in New York City who don't have food scrap drop-offs nearby. The org also teaches local residents further about sustainability so they are empowered to do the work on their own.
Morales says his org is working to build 10 sites across the city by 2022; he's already built 7.

I hope to do the same thing he’s doing soon. I’ve always wanted to compost but the sites be way to far from me to do so.

you can compost in a container inside an apartment. It's called vermiculture and you just need the right worms.
or find a gardener that will let you drop your waste in their pile. you can freeze it until you can transport it.
My whole province composts. it cut our garbage in half.

@@rosestewart1606 But I live in an apartment complex, so I'm not able to do that yet. But if I can find a gardener, I'll do that :)

I live in Staten Island, I'm a small business owner, a small grocery store in a Mexican community... but our community is so strong, I've actually been wanting to start composting but didn't know where to start. It would be amazing if you could come help our community next!

If you can't get ahold of him, try your county's cooperative extension office. They should be able to help you out. Also when you contact them, see if there's any Master Gardeners or 4-H group/participants who might be interested in helping because it would count as a community service project for them for extra hands to help. Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, & schools that have the IB program too because they do similar projects. Good luck & hope this helps some.

@@ThatLadyDray This is great advice, concerning resources many folks don't know about. The local extension service and Master Gardener programs were great when I wanted info on native plants, low water use, beekeeping, and tree pruning in addition to composting, and all their help was free. Big fan.

@@jeffreym68 I am a big believer in sharing information because people can't use a resource if they're not even aware it exists. Glad you got the assistance you needed. (Sorry for the late reply. I just saw your post.)

I’ve never seen any rodents near our backyard compost pile... sometimes there’s this friendly squirrel, though, who comes by and likes to eat the butternut squash scraps, if any happen to be there. Wait, do squirrels count as rodents? 😳
