      Diana’s dress was a cake topping meringue mess. But it was the 80s and everyone tried to copy it. It’s just so impractical, though. Because she was in a carriage, the dress needed to be bunched up and once she got to the cathedral it was all wrinkled. The only way that dress could work was if it was steamed while you were wearing it and you walked to the church. Lol.

    Grace Kelly's dress was so influential that think it should have been on this list, but I'm glad that at least you mentioned it. I also would have included Carolyn Bessette's. It was a complete departure from the over-the-top style from the 80's and it's the real embodiment of 90's minimalism. I was very young then, but it truly made an impact on me because of how simple and elegant her dress, hair and makeup were. And she also put Narciso Rodríguez on the map.

    I loved Meghan and Harry's wedding BUT, I was SOOO underwhelmed and blah when I saw her step out of that car my heart sank a little ( being dramatic on purpose ), I was expecting splendor and sparkle, elegance etc. I was speechless and not in a good way. Her face, tiara and veil were gorgeous but the dress looked like a poorly fitted nightgown that she found last minute on the David's Bridal discount rack. Meghan is so so beautiful but that dress choice really let her down... It was just too plain and loose fitting like they didn't have it in her size. It could have been so good sigh*

    • @ariaalexandria3324
      @ariaalexandria3324 6 лет назад +134

      I agree. As a designer, I stocked up on every fabric and lace and notion I could think of that might be used, and sat ready to knock out a replica. I knocked out Kate's, minus the lace, in eight hours. But I'm not a big name, so would never get the credit for it. Anyway, when she stepped out of the car, my heart did sink. I boasted to my followers that I was going to replicate her gown first, even though I was very sick, and then it ended up being something so basic that I decided screw it, I wasn't going to rush and make myself sicker over a design that literally has already been done...exactly. Down to the same seams. The design aesthetic worked well for the wedding, and it's a design I'm fine with overall, but that shockingly poor fit really pulled it down, as did Clare Weight Keller claiming to be the very original designer. She's as much the original designer of that gown as Kanye West is the very original designer of the plain white t-shirt in his line.
      And no, brides losing weight in the final days is no excuse. Oprah ended up having to have an entire new gown made overnight. If Meghan stressed-lost weight, it should have been alterable, especially with the cut is so basic.

    • @AlvinaRayne
      @AlvinaRayne 6 лет назад +65

      Aria Clements Absolutely, we may have that excuse but when you are marrying Prince Harry 🤴 that does not fly, they could have had it fixed even hours before the wedding, it was not just plain - it was painfully plain. 🧐🤕 I had my hopes way up. If at least the bodice and sleeves were fitted and there was some sort of lace or embellishment around the opening at least it would have looked so different and more elegant... Of all the things under the sun, why that?! Oh well, that ship has sailed 🛳 🍃 💦

    • @ariaalexandria3324
      @ariaalexandria3324 6 лет назад +57

      Even just the bodice being better fitted would have been an improvement. If I worked with a royal bride who wanted a design so basic that is has literally been done exactly before, I'd both make sure it was properly fitted so it didn't look off the rack, and would try to talk her into some embellishment. I think lace at the neckline would have competed with the embroidery on the veil a bit too much, bit perhaps some tiny scattered crystals around the bottom to give a bit of magical sparkle when she walked. It would still be simple and elegant, but have some point of interest. That basic of a gown is more acceptable for a non-royal wedding, and it worked for the aesthetic they were going for, but when a gown will be on display for the entire world, it just needs something more.

    • @AlvinaRayne
      @AlvinaRayne 6 лет назад +19

      Aria Clements Definitely some embellishments and a proper fit would have made all the difference, I was just thinking anything on top would have been better than how it was because it was just literally nothing, blank. I personally don't think it would have competed too much with the veil because everyone has a veil and many if not most dresses have that material somewhere in the gown to make it look more elegant and feminine, too bad there are no do-overs! Lol But a little sparkle would have been so much better! ✨🌟

    • @ariaalexandria3324
      @ariaalexandria3324 6 лет назад +28

      The veil was the focus of her overall ensemble, unlike Kate's. Kate had a veil, but her bodice and skirt bottom were the focal points. An interesting thing is that they both had lace representing the realms, and Kate's train and skirt bottom had that lace, and Meghan's veil had it.
      I think some dangly earring for Meghan would have been fantastic. The whole area did need something, but something that wouldn't compete with the veil. It's not a neckline for a necklace, but dangly earrings would have been just the right touch, I think. Honestly, I'm not convinced that was the dress she originally meant to wear, and I can actually make an argument for that.

    My favorite wedding dress is the one my mother wore. She was married in 1955, and had the dress custom made for herself. It had the very full skirt, which required a hoop skirt underneath, and was covered in a floral lace overskirt, had long fitted lace sleeves, a satin bodice like Kate Middleton's, with a lace overlayer going up into a boat neck. Satin covered buttons from the sacrum to the neck and 8 or 10 at the wrist. Some clear sequins where incorporated into the floral lace pattern for subtle sparkle. With help from my home economics teacher, I altered this dress to fit me for my own wedding in 1981. Whenever I see wedding dresses, I always compare them to my mother's. Some come very, very close but my mother's remains my favorite and the most breathtaking wedding dress that I've ever seen!

      Sounds Exquisite...The Wedding Gowns of the 50's and 60's had a Beautiful Regal Style about them...True Bridal Style..Not like the Styles you see today,where they are Spilling out of the Top Half..Those Bustier Dresses are Worn by Every Second Bride..🙄 I wore my Mother's 1960 Silk Embossed Brocade Wedding Gown in the 80's...Boat Neckline,A Line..Slim fitting Piqued cut Sleeves..Everyone else was Pooofing it Up😂😂😂

      I love my mother's dress too! My grandmother made it in 1956. It has the full, tea-length skirt like Audrey Hepburn's did. The neckline was high with a round collar, nothing earthshaking. But what Was fantastic was the fabric. Pure white, cotton eyelet. But not just any eyelet. The holes were not round, but square! So unique!! My sister cut it up and made her prom dress out of it, so I won't be able to wear it for my own. Now I am left with a few scraps of the eyelet and lovely photographs of my parents as very young people! ♡♡

    The "new look" of the 1950s was the nipped in waist and full skirt. Designer Oleg Cassini did many beautiful dresses for actress/girlfriend Grace Kelly, who later did marry Prince Rainier of Monaco. The detail that went into Grace's dress fills an entire book, included lace purchased from a museum. The Duchess of Cambridge had sort of a nod to Grace, in the best ways. My wife was a huge fan of (pardon if I spell this name incorrectly) Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, and quite liked her wedding dress, but not the price! So she bought a dress in maxi style with subtle lace, it was of course beautiful and we had money left to place a down payment for our house! ;)

    Megan had no embroidery on her dress… neither did princesses Margaret. Megan had a 20’ plus length veil, Princess Diana had a 25’ long train.There are some similarities, but what I find most interesting is that you didn’t really touch on why Markels dress was not iconic. Markles veil had embroidered flowers of all the lands of the common wealth plus a California poppy which was her favorite flower. Fergie and Markle both had private requests for personal touches in their embroidery. Markles was the poppy, Fergies was the image of an Achor which symbolized her husband to be’s attachment to the Royal Navy.

    I think Princess Mary of Denmark had the most beautiful Royal wedding gown. The neckline was gorgeous; it was cream which to me makes the dress look timeless and takes away from the starkness; the heavier lace of her veil (though she didn’t wear it down) looked like an heirloom and hung beautifully from her tiara; and the dress was fitted very well and accentuated her shape beautifully. She already looked like a princess before the wedding began. Didn’t care for her father’s kilt though. I think if she were marrying anywhere in Great Britain or one of it’s commonwealth countries it would have been lovely, but to wear it in Denmark seemed really out of place as the kilt means nothing to Danes.

    • @GFSLombardo
      @GFSLombardo 6 лет назад +48

      Both of Princess Mary's parents are from Scotland and live in Australia (a Commonwealth country) where she lived before she married the Danish Prince. The KILT is what Scottish gentlemen wear to all formal occasions(like their daughter's wedding) wherever it takes place. It was perfectly appropriate to the occasion. The Danes did not mind at all about his foreign costume. Their late Prince Consort (husband of the Danish Queen) was FRENCH. And who looks at the father of the bride at a wedding anyway? ALL eyes are, or should be, always on the Bride...

      Agree that Mary's dress was beautiful. The veil was a heritage piece, 100 years old. I think Mary's day was outstanding because she was so happy as well, and despite the poor cut of Meghan's dress, she did look happy. In general I liked Kate's dress but hated the almost Madonna-like conical boobs - it ruined the dress for me, as bad as poor fit. Agree about Angelina's dress. How sad it's promise of a happy family has been otherwise.

    --- I found Meghan Markle's dress downright plain & a bit strange. I couldn't believe the cost was estimated to be around $200,000. It seems like such a waste of money for a dress that is only worn for a few hours that will never be worn again. It also didn't seem to fit her properly. I've read that she might be pregnant & that might be why the dress was ill-fitting. As to the veil, it's all well & good to include the flowers of the Commonwealth countries, but let's be honest, who would have seen the veil up close to even be able to have seen those flowers?! Anyway, I hope she doesn't break Prince Harry's heart. He seems to be very into her but I feel it's a bit of a one-way street.

      J.J. Medusa I could sew better dress for 2000. What is wrong with that designer? I heard that even they stole design...not that there is much to steal lol, it was so simple and boring...

      the cost is ridiculous indeed for such a basic gown and designer piece!!! a joke! and i as well feel that she didn't marry purely out of love, its more a strategic and calculated choice.. time will show

      “ a bit strange” finally someone saying how it really is. It’s not just simple, she seemed to not care for that kind of greatness, like she was used to something more. And feminism has nothing to do with it

    Meghan made history herself. She doesn’t need an extravagant dress to reinforce that. I have so much respect for her choices for the wedding. In my opinion, the dress is so effortless and elegant. I love the taffeta fabric too. It is a beautiful canvas to accentuate her glowing face.

    I was hoping I'd see a video from you mentioning the Duchess's dress and what you thought about it! It was a great opportunity to talk about some wedding dresses in the past and I'm so glad you took it!! Maybe a video about menswear at weddings, or how British custom (the HATS, and children bridesmaids etc) came about, or the fashion traditions of various cultures differ around the world. That would be very cool, a little glimpse into what "normal" is, depending on where you live. I loved this video, as always. You never disappoint!! ❤️

    My three favorite wedding dresses in no particular order are, Grace Kelly because she looked every bit a princess in hers, Jackie Kennedy's because the shape is classic but it has a charming vibe to it, and Lydia Hearst's Christian Siriano gemstone illusion sleeve, pink ombre chiffon dress, because it's literally what I would imagine queen Titania from A Midsummers Night dream would wear. It's my dream wedding dress.

    Loved the analysis of these different dresses. I love the psychology and trends between all of them. Clothes say so much, but we hardly think that deeply about what we choose to wear. Thank you Justine! Love everything you make ❤

    For a 'modern' royal wedding dress, my favourite one is Kate's. Meghan's dress, however, would be something I could see myself wear, as the style is so elegant and timeless, and doesn't look too over the top or regal. If only it was a bit tighter on her, not to make it look sexier or anything, but the poor fit made her look shapeless, which is weird because that style of dress is basically shaped like an hourglass.

      A tight dress woud have been uncomfortable in that stiff fabric and she would have been/gotten so sweaty on such a sunny day - nobody wants to see a sweaty bride ;) I also would have prefered it tighter on her, but now i understand why it had to be looser - because of protocol and all. ;)

      Take a look at Kate's gown. The bodice was fitted to her like a glove. Meghan's gown was just plain poorly fitted.

      @OnWingsOfHope: Why does the price of Meghan's dress keep going up? Until the royals themselves reveal the price, I can't believe any "reports" on the price.

      Meghan is pretty shapeless though. There was a picture of her in March or February in a blue t-shirt dress that is fitted, and she barely has a curve at the waist.

    Kate's dress and indeed the one worn by Grace, very similar ... but both gorgeous!
    And on the cheeky side, I still love my own from 2002, my own design and all. The bodice had handmade lace and was backed with blue silk which I also used on the hem ... and added tiny pearl beads on that (by hand). Went fairly traditional too with the shoulders and elbows covered. Even made the petticoat that went underneath the dress to create the 'princess' look ... think they call it ballgown. Had a medium size train and a short veil (which I also made).
    In the early 90's I was an intern at a bridal atelier. The hap-hazard way of sewing (speed was more important than precision) was such a let down to me, it was then and there I made up my mind and make my own wedding dress whenever I'd meet the one and get married ... which I did about 10 years later.
