One of the advantages of being a British old codger (I will be 71 in 2025) is that I saw Genesis debuting Lamb Lies Down in Broadway, April 1975 in Edinburgh when I was 21 and Yes debuting Tales From Topographic Oceans also in Edinburgh in December 1973 when I was 19. Can you imagine seeing bands as they created and performed new music, unaware that they would be future masterpieces?

@@NowSpinningMagazine I was just turned 15 when in the second week of 1974, a close friend and I went to the record department of a department store. We saw the brand new Yes album. A double record. He bought it immediately. We get it up in his bedroom and start side one. 3 minutes later, my mom comes to pick me up. As I walked down the stairs, I knew I just heard the greatest music in the world. A week away from the 51st anniversary of that night, I find Tales From Topographic Oceans to be the finest music ever written or recorded in all music history.

Hard to control Scot when he gets going on his favorites. Some day he will add an extra T to his first name so it doesn't get misspelled all the time! Thanks for discussing Tales & Lamb. I find both albums too long and a little rambling, but I still continue to try and absorb them every few years. I will try again!! Love all your shows Phil. Your passion is just as great as Scot's and helps me appreciate the music even more. Keep up the great work!!

Hi Phil, had never heard of Scot Lade or seen the Prog Corner, so a great interview and what stood out to me was his number 1 Album by Yes. Being a huge prog fan and loving Yes since I first heard them I have to admit to staying somewhat clear of Tales of Topographic Oceans or Relayer so after hearing that Scot listened many times to get the message of these albums I going out on a limb and will buy Tales and sit down and listen to it until I get it. The problem for me has often I’ll listen to an album once and then go looking for the next thing. I’ve started to realise this is the wrong way to enjoy Prog albums. You have to play them multiple times to get the full depth of the music. Which, for me is why Prog is such a great musical journey. Thanks again Phil. All the best for 2025.

Scots no. 1 choice...is probably bang on. I've said this on the NSpinning FBook page about various memories I had associated with it when I first heard it, I'm not going to repeat them here and bore everyone. Prior to that I had heard Going for the One when it came out and thought it was okay. But I borrowed Topographic Oceans off my mate - it completely and utterly changed my view of Yes - it made Yes one of my top 3 fave bands ever. Is it my favourite Yes album? Probably not - Relayer or strangely GftO may get that accolade, but it always changes. But Topographic was my real gateway to the band, the one that made me stop in my tracks, the one that turned my head, I loved it from the first play.....it's what I wanted the band whose album covers promised so much - the mystery, the magnificence to deliver - the music matches the sleeve.

Hi Phil. That was great fun! Must look up Scott's RUclips channel. I had no idea you were in Handsome Beasts. So much to learn from videos like this one.
One way of getting into albums like TfTO is to listen to the songs live. I've made a 40-minute tape of two sides/tracks from the album live in '74. Some of Steve Howe's guitar is so eerie that you can't help take it in and want to get spooked out again. Of course I want to hear it now, if I can find it.😀 But it's hard to understand why Tales... gets so much flak. In-a-Gadda-da-Vida and Echoes are older songs which take up a whole side of vinyl. We hard rock fans didn't reject Side 2 of Rising because Stargazer and Light in the Black are lyrically almost one song.
We have to remember that some classical works were misunderstood or rejected when they were new.

There are so many "1st generation" prog bands that are still the best ...Camel, Gentle Giant, PFM, Van der Graaf, Jethro Tull, and the ones that you mentioned. Yes' TFTO is a fantastic musical adventure very much like J.Tull's A Passion Play, some how people did not embrace the great musical journey ??? It is great to see you being so positive about some brilliant music. Great show BTW. (The last 90secs of TAAB is awesome !!...along with many other moments).

Interesting chat. I have seen King Crimson in the 80's (Beat tour) and the last tour with Jacko and I've never been a big fan but got to appreciate them much more. Strange that I need to revisit Prog and yet i became a Jazz fusion guy early 80's so you'd think I'd have been into both. Apart from Focus, some Yes (and National Health if you include the Canterbury scene) I wasn't in that camp until much later.

Hi Phil - well that was bloody hilarious - great stuff. No surprises from me - I would probably chose different albums, but those bands were certainly the best. To be honest - why doesnt anyone talk about Family's - "Music In A Dolls House" - for me, one of the great prog albums, and so far ahead of anything at that time. Released in July 1968 and co produced by Dave Mason, AND they were the first English band to be released on the Reprise label. Come on Phil - Family were a great band. I saw them two or three times late 60's, early 70's at the height of their powers, and they always put on an amazing show. You just have to look at Family's line up - they had some great musicians. I have the original UK LP, and I have the gorgeous remastered digibook 2CD with Family Entertainment. FAMILY - what a great band they were. Cya Doug

Great job Scot! God save the King!
My personal top 5 (only 5 is really hard):
    1. Genesis “Foxtrot”
    2. Yes “Tales From Topographic Oceans”
    3. Van Der Graaf Generator “Pawn Hearts”
    4. Gentle Giant “Three Friends”
    5. Jethro Tull “Thick As A Brick”
I have to add a number 6 because I can’t leave Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon off of the list. I don’t listen to it often anymore because I have played it hundreds and hundreds of times in my life but it is probably more important to shaping my musical tastes than any of the above albums. I wasn’t born until 1976 so needed a gateway album and DSOTM was definitely that.

I totally agree with Scott’s top five progressive rankings, and those top two> topographic oceans and the lamb live down on Broadway off for me musical Bible revelations, while most of my friends hated both of these albums I totally gravitated to them and got them within only a few listings perhaps because I was starting to get into jazz fusion like Mahavishnu Orchestra these days these two albums and the other three that sit around, listening to list and I’ve been listening to these guys for 50 years now! Incidentally, I want to say about Jethro Tull. They were my very first rock concert at a 400 seat theater in New Jersey and it was them in 1970 doing songs from stand-up and benefit. The New Jersey crowd went wild. We love to from that point on, and I felt, and my friends felt that Jethro Tull were gonna be a superstar rock band in America and the world and so they did, have great memories of seeing concert five groups that Scott and you fill site here thank you for this wonderful trip down memory lane that continues in my life till this very day rock rock on brothers ….. That is a thing some lack, also why some progsters appreciate very good pop songs. There is a valid reason musical self-indulgence gets criticism, because it serves only the likeminded, a narrower audience, even among the same fans.
I don't rank double albums filled with filler as high as LP's with solid content.

Two of my top 3 in all music history are those two double albums because all but 3 minutes of those great albums are the most outstanding music ever recorded. Tales is the finest music ever written or recorded in all music history. Hold Your Fire by Rush is number 2. And Lamb is my 3rd favorite ever.

I don't like lamb lies down. It's their worst in my opinion. Taste eh!!!
And I don't like YES at all. Floyd,KC,tool,Riverside and tull would be my favourite prog bands. Edit I forgot porcupine tree.
I guess I'm a prog lite fan eh.
GG and elp are ok,along with Genesis.
