What made BATIM:TDR work over FNAF SB was the fact that the former understood that, despite having a child audience, it was still a horror game at heart.
BATIM didn't need to tone itself down for its child fanbase, nor did it have to rely on multiple endings in order to make a good story narrative.
    BATIM TDR understood the assignment,
    FNAF SB didn't.

I honestly don't understand when somebody calls BATIM or BATDR a KID's game. Like with a T rating, violence like somebody getting impaled through the "heart", somebody getting axed in the head, somebody getting shoved in the meat grinder and sawn up into TINIEST pieces, someone getting their legs ripped off, somebody getting their bones slowly broken, etc., a few not-so-serious swearing like "hell" or "heck". Yeah, because they had a plan, and it worked, with FNAF security breach, it was glitchy, was delayed then pooped out, and you can tell something happened Midway through development, even if there were no glitches, the story was a mess too, the trailer and the game are 2 different stories, actual look at them, there's literally parts that was removed, voice lines, and ideas, vanny is hardly there, and Monty doesn't even talk to the other animatronics, the lore was mixed really badly, Springtrap has a slight more presence in the trailer even, even some of the endings weren't even supposed to be silent, their voice lines were just gone, and not to mention the glitchy ending where Vanessa just says, go to the stage for a reward, and the game just just glitches out, hell, even the ending you can tell which one was more fan liked, 1 you are a huge bendy folding people and have all the characters help you in a avengers moment, in FNAF, you see burntrap finally appear, for 1 fight, and you don't even fight him, you just block each anatomic once, press a button and then cutscene, it just feels so unsatisfying, not to mention boss fights in general in that game are a cutscene, or you just avoiding the same animatronics you've been avoiding the entire game, with the only good boss fight is Montgomery gator, the only thing I'll say is FNAF has some more enjoyable main cast, but even they get under used, the animatronics are cool, but they have a small bit then use the same voice lines nonstop, and bearly get their own actual time to shine, with a small few exceptions, with bendy, you feel satisfied, with FNAF, I just wanted more, that's how I'll put it, not the franchise, just the recent games

SB did something no FNaF game has done before yet the fans have been doing for years: it gave the animatronics distinct personalities and it made those personalities stand out in their interactions with the protagonist, even in a non-lethal way. I always thought it really was great content for folks who like to make fan stories and animations with slice of life or adventure plots. The Batdr team had a full story and written out just fine. The Fnaf sb team felt like they did at one point had a stroy to go off of, but when Scott retired, it felt like the whole story was scraped and got rewritten in a short amount of time so it felt off. I love both games. It just felt like one story got scaped and done again, and the other had a strate path forward. Also, side note Fnaf sb did more interaction with the fan base, and because of that, it got more demand and rushed. Batdr, on the other hand, did less with the fan base and worked on the game more, giving less demand and more room to work with. This is just my opinion for both games.

Actually, the reasons why the story was overhauled are
      1) The poor optimisation. Several major story events from the trailer simply can't run in the game.

Fun fact, Joey having a 'new' voice actor isn't as big of a change as people think it is! We only hear David Eddings voicing Joey in BATIM Chapter 3. Dave Rivas has been the voice of Joey since Chapter 4 of Bendy and the Ink Machine (meaning he's the voice in Chapters 4, 5, Boris and the Dark Survival, and Bendy and the Dark Revival), he just went without credit during the first game. It's something Lauren Synger (voice of Alice Angel, Allison, and voice director of BATDR) has stated in public before. The only thing that's changed for BATDR is the tone of the writing and what it called for in a performance.

its kind of funny, BATIM went from meh to amazing, and fnaf went from amazing to ...meh.
BATDR's biggest selling point, is it decided to stray a bit from the horror genre in favor of story imo...which honestly saved it. usually horror games should keep horror as the main element, but batim was in this weird middle where it wanted to be horror, but also wanted to be a narrative story. which kinda ended up making it sound confused as to what it wanted to be by the end, it no longer felt like a horror game, so the first two chapters and the last three felt really...missmatched. batdr decided to go full on story, even sacrificing some horror elements in favor of pushing the story forward. giving you bioshock esque powers to make navigation easier, and honestly, all were great moves.
security breach fell into the same category, but still tried too hard to focus on the horror element, BATDR ended up being a good narrative horror game because it actually distanced itself a bit from horror. which allowed the ambiance and scenery to carry the horror without resorting to creepy jumpscares or disturbing imagery every second. which made the moments of horror so much more scary. honorable mention to the optional fourth butcher gang member. its genius, adding jumpscares to the game, but making it an "opt in" sort of event. although ink demon no longer actually hunting you down is a letdown, it still manages to keep the suspense, and the way its implemented to encourage progress is nice instead of it just being random. you know if you are chilling in a room for too long he will start to hunt, rather then just...him randomly appearing making you paranoid if he's gunna show up soon or not.
security breach also struggled with having too much ambition. they tried to bite more then they could chew. and BATDR decided to play it safe, kept with the original formula, kept it linear, but added more methods to progress in the game to keep it fresh. if security breach lived up to expectations it wouldve been great, but it didn't even come close, while BATDR knew what it wanted to do and knew it could do it.
lastly, security breach felt too..safe. and im not talking about freddy being an ally, i actually kinda dig that direction, the problem is it didn't really do anything outstanding, and the stuff that actually DID look interesting was all cut from the game...leaving a generic horror game and the plot twists were so forced it wasnt funny. replace fnaf with any other ip and you still get the same game. like, replace all the animatronics with bendy characters, change the colours to be bendy-ish, and what do you get? the same game. but BATDR has a unique concept, one that only it could do. and the plot twist of BATDR was actually a pretty interesting one. that all this time the villain was never actually lying to you and although he was obviously psychotic, he did have a solid plan, just...a pretty messed up one. and the ending...such a great plot twist. i wont spoil it for anyone.
security breach was an unfortunate accident. it was steel wools first BIG project, and to be fair, for what it is, its not a bad first attempt...but they kinda bit off more then they could chew. BATDR solidified what direction it wanted to take. it wanted to shy away from the horror element a bit in favor of story and mechanics, AND it delivered. its no AAA game, but damn we didn't have much expectations for it, so to see it actually be good was kind of shocking.
also the last bit of gushing, but holy, the ink demon's voice was perfect. i HATE when games do that, giving a mute character a voice, but the ink demons voice was so perfect, i canonicalized it in my head the moment i heard it. also henry looks exactly like how i would expect him to look.

Even if the BATDR story could be better, it's more coherent than Security Breach. There's a clear progression of events and even if it raises new questions, you still understand what's going on.
With Security Breach it feels like we're missing so much context it's hard to make sense of anything.

SB was very ambitious but to the point where they forgot to include the parts that made fnaf so loved in the first place.
Bendy was also very ambitious but it still stuck to their core and focused more on what they could improve while add new stuff that fits the bendy theme

I think the most disappointing thing for me with Security Breach is that the Trailers seemed incredible! It felt so huge, urgent, scary even...
I still like SB, mostly because of the new Characters, which brings me to another disappointment. Vanny. She could've been so interesting and cool, but, like, she was there for 2 Minutes max? She didn't feel like a threat at all, sadly.

I think we can agree the TheMeatly made the right decision to delay BATDR so that they could release all chapters at once since it kinda felt as though they were making BATIM up as they went along so by releasing all chapters at once, it meant that they had more time to make the game scary, and (when compared to FNAF: SB) BATDR had a clearer vision about the story it wanted to tell.

Security breach’s issues come down to them wanting to make what looks and feels like an open world game in a series who’s fear factor comes from a feeling of helplessness and the inability to run. They wanted to do all the same fnaf things; alternate endings, little to no actual information to let the fans dissect it on their own, new, barely explained animatronics but did it in a game that isn’t really built for it.
They would’ve been much better off making it way less open and trying to do more of a legit story that still allows for months worth of dissecting, a bit like the books and how even though they’re full stories, they still have lots of things you can pick apart and theorise around.

The worst part is the pre-release content contains a much moodier lighting option that would have made the game so much scarier. Kill the lighting, axe the hundreds of mindless staff bots, and actually make the main antagonists' AIs difficult to evade (and, you know, make the storyline digestible and fleshed out), and the game may have actually felt like a horror.

I’ve had a theory for a while that this sort of game have three main audiences (which so bleed into each other) and they need to cater their games to these:
    1. Their own fandom. This is where deeper lore and ongoing story matter most
    2. The general horror community. As you would think this is scare factor
    3. The general gaming community. Mostly value the other two but with gameplay and mechanics as a key thing
Dark revival considered all 3 mostly in balance which is why it was successful, it appealed to all the communities that were initially attracted to it.
whereas Security breach which went wayyy overboard for their own fandom- so much so if you don’t know previous lore the game makes no sense whatsoever. The general gaming community is slightly valued in fun gameplay like the music man sequence or daycare mechanics but the horror community is pretty much neglected- honestly the only part I considered even slightly scary was the Moon section. It was very disappointing because Scott usually considered this in his games.

I would specifically have technical problems in the atrium. I also didn’t really like that Afton came back and the vagueness of what happened to him in the true ending. However, I did have fun with the game. Bendy and the dark revival was also a really good game and I had a lot of fun with it too.

Steel Wool definitely had SB go through a lot of last minute changes and it shows. If they kept even the majority of what was cut, the game would have been so much better. Also, the devs have said that the Ruin DLC will aim to be a lot scarier and less kid friendly. They have also stated that it is running ahead of schedule, so it will likely be far more polished and complete than the base game. And lastly, while I have no idea how likely this is, I’m hoping that they may also re-add some of the lost content of the original game, such as Roxy Raceway having the controllable go-cart section, the survival mode that is actually still currently able to be played with some file manipulation, and maybe even the character gallery. I also feel that Steel Wool doesn’t deserve most of the hat it has gotten because there is clearly a lot of love for the franchise from the developers, and they were very ambitious with such a small team that clearly shows their passion. And while they were pressured by fans due to their release dates being pushed back so much, that likely wasn’t their main problem. Matpat from The Game Theorists said that they had actually received emails from the CEO of Steel Wool asking if he had an inside man feeding him information. The theories being so accurate likely caused the developers to make changes to the story because they didn’t want their game spoiled months before it even came out. I mean, people get upset whenever a Marvel movie is spoiled for them before they see it, but how would you feel if someone spoiled it months before it was even released?

  • @jeffreyfiegen1538

My thoughts going into this are as such. Security Breach had no clear vision and was a hodgepodge of various design elements and systems that likely had others meant to complement and polish them left on the cutting room floor. Dark Revival on the other hand wore its influences on its sleeve, demonstrating a clear vision, along with a fleshed-out story explaining not only its _own_ plot but also the plot of Ink Machine, clearing up issues many had with it. Not to mention, DR's story complemented and continued the beats of IM, while SB stayed mostly disconnected from its predecessors, until the only ending with a fully animated cutscene ruined the canonical ending of the original series finale. Then there's the idea of one feeling complete on launch, while the other is still a broken mess with half-implemented concepts and inconsistent ending styles (the comic-style endings feel more like they were originally the storyboards the endings, but due to a rapidly approaching deadline, they just colored in the storyboards and submitted those instead).

I really like how BATDR was a sort of "soft reset" for the series. The lore of the first game was kind of a mess. They clearly didn't have much of a plan, and the ending just confused and disappointed everyone. So Dark Revival gives you a literal powerpoint presentation explaining all the lore of the first game to clear up the confusion (even with the theories that Joey is lying, since it still gives a solid baseline explanation for the world). It's a huge improvement over the first game. Don't get me wrong, I like BATIM - chapters like Chapter 2 made up for the walking sim gameplay with neat puzzles (kind of) and great atmosphere + characters. But Dark Revival is a lot more fleshed out as a complete game.

The best way for me to explain my feelings on sb and batdr is in the form of a story. Once upon an era there was a bear who monopolized a indie structure with his boss mr Scott. This bear dominated the town of indie, and inspired many others on there own journeys. One of these lil folks was a lil demon named bendy, who with the help of his boss made a equally as substantial footprint in indie town tho it was a rough start his first game wasn’t the best but people liked it. Mr fazbear just scoffed the lil demon off as a “attention grabber”. After a few years the bears life had slowly fell from grace with the latest game being a kid friendly cash grab, meanwhile the lil demon was never seen for a long time. Until suddenly bendy returned better than ever leaving me fazbear in the dust.

BATDR is how to do an indie horror game properly. As much as I love SB, it has so many moments that I just didn't like. It doesn't even feel like "five nights at freddy's." SB was definitely rushed, and the developers kept changing their minds about the story. Even though the first Bendy game was generally mediocre, the developers did a lot better of a job of making a story. I was never a huge fan of Gregory (found him quite annoying), and I didn't like the animatronics either (except for Freddy, Sun, and Moon). But with BATDR, I loved pretty much all of the characters. BATDR was also just SO much more scary. SB starts off kind of scary but gets boring later on. I just feel like SB had so much missed potential, and I wish it could've been better. The main way I see why Bendy Worked and Fnaf didn't.
Bendy could really Genuinely go anywhere it wanted with the story no one really expected anything of it because we had no knowledge of where it could go. So the Devs had the freedom to write and create it in the way they wanted.
Fnaf SB on the other hand had an expectation of the story. We had where it left off prior and were eager to see where it was going to go. And it went in a direction that many aren't exactly happy with. I personally love the game. I enjoy games that I can break and although I've kept with the story of fnaf since it started I don't care where it goes. But I understand that people prefer that a game Isn't horribly buggy and a story that isn't confusing.
BATDR is also a smaller game compared to fnaf SB which is huge compared to in in map size.

I think people vastly underestimate just how big the difference in quality is between these two. The difference in reception has NOTHING to do with whether or not the games were made for children or for adults, or if it's scary - the difference is the finished products' quality.
Security Breach is a broken, unpolished mess, full of bugs, glitches, and had incredibly bad performance issues.
Bendy and the Dark Revival, while not perfectly polished to the degree of something like No Man's Sky in 2024, it's still decently well designed, planned and executed.
Also there's an interesting contrast of how both the games affected the pre-existing narratives of their respective franchises - Security Breach took an already satisfying story (that was already concluded, really), and turned it into shit, while Bendy and the Dark Revival took a shit story and sort of made up for it, made it better.
Ultimately, the difference is competence of the dev team. Steel Wool Studios just... suck at making games that aren't in VR (and even then, they can't help themselves from becoming overambitious with their projects, to their games' detriment. )

with Teasers images still being shown.

But Bendy and the dark revival though, they did a lot more smooth and logical choices when it comes to the game IMO. Yes They did send a trailer for it years ago but they also kept quiet about the game after that. They were quiet about it for like a year or something. Rather than keep doing delays to the game, they kept quiet. I think they did it right, that way they won’t have any pressure and have all the time they need.

There were some stuff that disappointed me in dark revival. Like when we play as beast bendy, the ink demon could try to take back control and have moments where we have to mash buttons to keep control. In the end, he was just all bark and no bite. I would have also given him a humorously petty side in the cutscene where Audrey puts the end reel in the projector where the almighty ink demon who is feared by all, starts to beg for his life to her and pray she would reconsider resetting the cycle.

    • @inkyplays1858

I would rather not have the Ink Demon beg for his life and I think everyone else would agree, The Ink Demon is supposed to be this all powerful and feared being, (the God of the ink world) having him beg and pray for his life would completely decrease his scare factor, (nobody is scared of a crybaby) I also don't see the need for him to beg for his life anyways, in Bendy and the Dark Revival Henry Stain makes it extremely clear that when The Ink Demon sees The End it completely resets the ink world, (It doesn't harm The Ink Demon in anyway so it would be completely unnecessary for him to beg.)

That first idea honestly would've been much better than what we have right now. Just a minor change, but like you said, the Ink Demon really was just "all bark and no bite" in the final run to the projector, and it definitely would've made more sense for him to put up a physical struggle.
I do agree with Inky plays on that last idea though. Like they've mentioned, the Ink Demon is supposed to be a dangerous and intimidating threat, something the Dark Revival manages to consistently pull off really well compared to the first game. Having all of that be thrown away in the final, and arguably most epic part of the game, feels like a cheap attempt at humour that'll not only damage his overall character, but ruin the mood of the projector scene.

I feel like the free roam in Security Breach also took away from the horror. What scared me about the earlier games was that you couldn’t really move, and if you could (ex. Sister Location) it was very limited so it gave you a sense that you were trapped, and if you were caught, that’s it, you had to accept your fate. But now it’s just “Oh shit Chica saw me, better go hide in a stroller because the Ai in these things is about as intelligent as a pea”

They could have added a system that prevents you from running away, like amnesia did. In that game, the monster becomes gradually faster as they are chasing you, this would prevent the player from simply running away and being reckless
Edit: This mechanic would also add a whole new layer of strategy to each encounter, and strategy is what made fnaf a fun franchise to begin with, you had to think your way through each night and think of a way to effectively deal with the animatronics. You would actually have to think instead of simply running away to the next fetch quest.
That "faz-tazer" thing you get in the game should have been removed from teh game, it removes all tension from already non threatening chase scenes, making the game's challange simply too trivial.
Steel wool should have also removed the security bots, the are simply an annoyance and are only there to make the animatronics slitghly more threteaning than they otherwise would not be had the stupid security bots not existed in the first place

I still love that Carly is COMPLETELY optional but most people still experience her because we all suffer from the same need to solve all puzzles in these games. Not only that, but I think one of the big reasons DR did better than SB is because DR was written to not only continue the story, BUT also help explain the last one better. Ink Machine definitely suffered a bit from the episode structure in that you could tell that Meatly and the crew didn't have a solid idea on where the story was gonna go. With Dark Revival not having episodes they were able to plan the narrative fully, and as such were able to retroactively fix the first game so it makes more sense. I've only seen a few instances where a sequel is able to not only stand on its own, but make earlier installments make more sense. They were also able to build off of the aesthetics of the first game and expand upon them. Bendy's style of horror has always been more subtle with thankfully few jumpscares compared to other series, and they were able to keep that while also adding more to it. When a horror game makes me feel unsettled the whole time to the point I start getting a bit paranoid, I know it's done well. I'm glad there are at least some horror franchises that still remember jumpscares aren't the only way to scare someone.
Security Breach on the other hand was trying to revive an already finished story line with a character (William) who had already reached the conclusion of his arc and just wasn't needed anymore. I think if they cut Burntrap but keep Glitchtrap's influence (and maybe have Glitch just be like a digital copy not actually William) on Vanny, they would have had a LOT more dev time to make the rest of the game work better. I get they were rushed but they definitely didn't do themselves any favors by trying to force Afton back into the series. I think Steel Wool was afraid of going too far from the formula, fearing they'd anger the fans if they did, but still wanted to make something new. They should have focused on making a new story line with ties to the old plot but letting it stand on its own. It seems silly to say one section ruined the game but I really think if they hadn't bothered with Burntrap or anything to do with that ending the game would have been better.
I personally don't think Scott retiring had as much an effect as people think because we already know he wasn't thinking his plot and lore all the way through and made up plenty of shit on the fly over the years with the original run of FNAF before Steel Wool got involved. Not only that, but SB still tried to rely a lot on the jumpscares FNAF is known for when the gameplay style they were using isn't paired well with it. If they had done like Dark Revival and really leaned into atmospheric horror and the like it would have gone better.

one way i feel glitchtrap/burntrap could have worked more is if there were hints, the lore indicates that yes, he is the one behind vanny, but also, what if there were things scattered around the pizzaplex, not outright a child's cartoon of spring bonnie with 'he's in the building' right next to it, but some of the logs could be reports of rumours of him, at least then you know he's been there a long time. hell, if they didn't hold back, and didn't make it kid friendly, they very well could have had messages from the 'missing' (we all know they died) kids about what happened, like 'there is someone else' or something. there's so much missed opportunity with that buildup it's like 'that's it? no, seriously, he's just THERE?!' that is just irks me, so much

    Security Breach was story/lore lacking.
Bendy and the dark revival had a more better story.
Also Well Based On The Original Trailer for Security Breach. It did include the scene of Us looking through the curtains through Freddy’s Greenroom and seeing Vanessa waking as well as another scene of us walking through the sewers. So it does seem like The Story from the original trailer, they were still going with that but they decided to completely redesign the map. So Yes, it seems like Freddy was still going to help us while Vanessa does end up being our ally later on and think this is where The Cut Shattered GlamRock Freddy Content comes in.

@@johnclark222 SB was at its best when it had more tighly focused and condensed areas that allowed its gameplay to flourish like the music man and endoskeletons setpieces.
The game clearly can't handle being a massive open map and the AI especially shows that since they have to put staff bots everywhere and the animatronics teleport.
The game probably wouldve been better if they relegated the plot to a specific area of the pizzaplex every hour/night and a specific threat was assigned to each area like how alien isolation sometimes had humans and working joes over the xenomorph on specific parts of the station.
This wouldnt fix a lot of the issues with the story/characters but atleast it would let the gameplay/horror elements shine more.
Hopefully for ruin they focus on smaller but more compact and detailed gameplay sections and try and straighten out the lore (not against a remnant of afton/his legacy returing through vanny but it was done horribly).

It really seems like the FNaF franchise tried too hard to shoehorn in their characters, extending it past its prime. One of the best aspects you can have about a character, especially in a long-run series, is that they aren't there forever. I mean, how long has it been since Baby has been introduced or expanded on? Yet, she's still one of the most remembered characters in FNaF. Imagine if that same logic had been applied to the other characters, instead of milking it dry.

I think its important to mention that Steel Wool (according to the games they have listed on the website) worked on mainly VR games. The only two that weren't VR were their very first game (which was a linear platformer game) and Security Breach (which is a free roam in a massive building). They bit off way more than they could handle. It probably didn't help that the one person who can calm fans down by making smaller games retired in the middle of development.
