      I had just watched Band of Brothers for the first time, right before seeing Dreamcatcher, so I went into it with high hopes because of Damian Lewis and Donnie Wahlberg… I don’t think a movie has ever disappointed me as much as that incident. It wasn’t even a “so bad it’s good” experience, it was just plain bad. Which makes it perfect for the Basement, really.

    Great ep, guys! I really liked how you seemed to be extra emotive in the segments without the masks, haha. I never realized how much I missed watching your expressions. A note on the pronunciations, there's a youtube (Pronounce Names) that has the Italian/original way of pronouncing both Coppola and Scorsese if you're curious (and they have others like Buscemi on there) but it is important to note Italian-americans pretty much all Americanify their surnames now, to the point where it doesn't matter any more since everyone pronounces it differently. Scorsessy seems to be the way he pronounces his own name -- there's a video of that too out there.

    Oh, are you looking for a microgenre to pursue? How about movies with cairn terriers as named characters in them? Because they exist apparently, outside of the most obvious example - The Wizard of Oz (Dog's name being Toto). Someone with too much time on his/her hands has composed a list of 73 movies with real cairn terriers playing roles in movies and getting credit alongside human actors. Very obviously, I am a cairn terrier owner and enthusiast myself! And cinema had something to do with that, which may be my actual point here! Or maybe I just wanted to recommend you to take a closer look at one particular movie on this list - Saturn 3 - with a cairn terrier getting killed for having the audacity to expose a murderous robot somewhere out in space alongside Kirk Douglas, Farrah Fawcett and Harvey Keitel. Dog's name is here Sally. Rest in peace... well... pieces, Sally!

    First off. The reason Motorcycle Boy wanted to free the fish, was because he was trying to in the most simple way imaginable, convey how Gang life should be from here on. He believed that if the fish were put in the river and have plenty of space to move around that they'd go their separate ways. Not fighting, just moving around doing their own thing.
    The fish that retreat also represent the people in Rusty James life that left him. Smokey and Patty, his mother and Motorcycle Boy. The lone fish in the river that stays moving around, that's him.
    Second off, the person at the end is Rusty James. He was told by MB that no matter what happens, he must go to California, make it to the ocean and then go find their mother. Which he does.

    Senility doesn't excuse what Judge Hoffman did. Nothing does. It's actually incredible how this isn't exaggerated in the film; that's what happened. If anything, the movie softens it; in real life the treatment of Seale went on for DAYS.

    and yet again i must recommend looking up Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter (1978), a Hammer Studios production. If you do i would talk about the fact that all of the swordsmen in the story sure their weapons as tool as well as weapons and the swords seem to act as an extension of the person and a representation of their self-image in direct opposition to how their are viewed by the people around them. Kronos with a dangerous and "exotic" katana is a gentleman, while man with the "gentlemanly "fencing sword is a brute and criminal.

    Yeah as others said Kumail got buff because he's going to be in Marvel's Eternals.... it was announced a while ago. I assume he's been training in the interim. I think Kumail's comedy is great, but I'm excited to see if he can branch out into an action role... but the Marvel movies lean pretty hard on the comedy so I'm sure it wont be much of a stretch anyway.

    Not having seen the movie, my thoughts on the color/black-and-white thing is that color is used to represent anger/violence. That's why it goes to color in that one shot when Rusty pounds on the car. That's also why Motorcycle Boy is colorblind, he no longer feels that rage his brother has, and he's trying to get Rusty to see everything else. At the end, Rusty taking the fish to the river is him finally letting go of his anger. Just my 2 cents from what little I saw in the video.

  • @irwinisidro

    Francis Ford Coppola was originally going to produce David Lynch's unmade Ronnie Rocket (post-The Elephant Man). Some of the ideas that may have possibly transfered into this film was certain things would be color over black and white cinematography. But due to the box office failure of One From the Heart, the project stopped.

  • @skybluemarshall
    @skybluemarshall 3 года назад

    I haven't seen this film, but I think the black and white format represents the color blindness of the characters. Motorcycle Boy is literally color blind, but he can see the beauty of the violent rumble fish.
    Rusty James is metaphorically color blind to the kind of poetic beauty and deeper meaning which Motorcycle Boy can see so easily. Rusty's eyes are only open to the simpler things in his violent world, like a cop tossing him against a car.
    If my analysis is correct, it would have made more sense if Coppola had placed more colorized shots in the movie. For example, maybe when Rusty fights, the blood could've been red or the pool table could've been green or Diane Lane could've been colorized, because sex, violence and playing pool were important to Rusty.
    When Motorcycle Boy counsels his brother or saves him, Rusty could've been colorized and when he rode his motorcycle, the bike could've been colorized to emphasize what was important to Motorcycle Boy.
    But, what do I know? I'm just spit balling. I haven't ever seen the entire movie. I always changed the channel after a few minutes, because it looked like an interesting movie, that you have to watch from beginning to end.

    On the subject of Soul, there was an article I read in anticipation of its release that underscores the "get back to Earth" point Matt made, as well as the racial points: There is this pattern in major animated movies, where if the lead character is a person of color, they will undergo a transformation to no longer be a human. This happens in Coco, it happens in The Princess and the Frog, Brother Bear, Spies in Disguise, et cetera, and it robs the typically young audience of something really valuable.

    After the mindless idiocy of the comment you guys got about masks that you talked about on Beer & Board Games I say keep the masks on FOREVER!! To hell with COVID denying morons! Losing loved ones to this crap makes tolerating them impossible!
    Also I can’t wait to see Kumail Nanjiani in Eternals(the role he buffed up for)! From what I understand its perfect for the role in a very comedic way, he’s playing an immortal that moonlights as a Bollywood action star! I cannot wait for Eternals because of the genius that is Chloe Zhao! 2021 is her year! Oscars for Nomadland AND a Marvel film? How will Scorsese deal with THAT!? 😜 Love the show guys! Cheers!

    • @h1r086
      @h1r086 3 года назад

      "Mindless idiocy" "To hell" "morons" would likely make arguing with you impossible. Yes continue to demonize the "other" to show how well meaning you are. You wouldn't believe me if I said you're "killing grandma" more than people who "deny" covid are. I do not deny covid exists, but the mortality rates have absolutely included comorbidities and false positives meaning the current rate of death is a conservative estimation and is actually much much lower. Governments have been PROVEN to lie about their numbers all over north america at the least. Governors Cuomo and Whitmer are perfect examples of this that even watchers of the fake news media are now capable of believing since they're the new demonization target, despite whistleblowers warning about these lies months before but not being part of the narrative. "We changed how we calculate the statistics" How many times have you heard this in the past year? It's insanity and people just "trust the science" as if science is this centralized board of directors who know better than everyone else. It is indeed what science is becoming with a weaponized appeal to authority. You make me sicker than covid ever could. I fully expect this comment to be deleted because this is what keeps happening. I often comment trying to get people to at least admit they COULD be wrong (much like everyone used to think the earth was flat) and I get censored, shamed, insulted because everyone presumes bad faith and must remove the "other" because the powers that be require it. The only facts I present are that there is doubt cast on the information we are given, I made no claims that denies covid is real or CAN be harmful. It's just overblown.

    I always thought the Motorcycle Boy photo in the magazine looked suspiciously like an near-g-rated outtake the photographer repurposed from the beginning of an eventually-nude shoot for a gay porn magazine such as Drummer or Honcho--something an itinerant drifter might have done for quick cash while on the road. It definitely had a "rough trade" vibe which might be overlooked by straight guys.

    Yes, the cinematography is fantastic. But the mealy-mouthed mumbling, murky motivation (what can you say about a lead character who just wants to fight people to show what a "man" he is?), heavy-handed symbolism and metaphors that condescend to the audience (by his own admission, Coppola said his aim was to make "an art film for teenagers"), and a barely extant plot held together with a script so loaded with repetition ("Hey, Rusty James, Biff Wilcox is looking for you, Rusty James. He says he's gonna kill you, Rusty James!" - just try to take a sip of wine every time someone says "Rusty James" and you'll be lit half an hour into it) and banal observations that pass for profound insights make this film unwatchable for me. This is one of those films in the Criterion Collection (like "Dazed and Confused", which is just a stoner version of "American Graffiti") that I consider an "inclusive" entry, included because some people have a fondness for it that belies explanation. Of course, I know this is all very objective and there are things to admire about this film (like the aforementioned cinematography), but Rusty James, why do you have to DO that, Rusty James? Oh, Rusty James, do you hear me, Rusty James? Listen, Rusty James, and hear me well, Rusty James... You better work it out, Rusty James, or Biff Wilcox will KILL you, Rusty James!

      Well you're obviously putting the mask over your eyes, it's supposed to go over your nose and mouth. Wear it like that and you should be able to watch just fine.

      No mask is going anywhere. I just can't hear you well and there's no emotion conveyed with masks. I still support you, and have watched for 14-15 years. I'll just have to wait till the masks come off.
